Overlooking a vast fjord, Iceland’s vibrant second city Akureyri is a great jumping off point for exploring Northern Iceland. To the west, the Troll Peninsula is scattered with towering mountains, deep green valleys and natural hot spring pools. Across the fjord, the small fishing settlement of Husavik at the northern tip of the coast is the centre of whale watching in the region and in 2020 was made famous by the blockbuster film, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga.
The Diamond Circle, including the vast flowing waters of Godafoss and Dettifoss waterfalls - the most powerful in Europe, Lake Myvatn’s bubbling geothermal areas and Asbyrgi Canyon is also well worth a visit.
Trailfinders offers a range of Akureyri and Northern Iceland holidays and our expert travel consultants are a mine of information about what to do here, often with first-hand travel experience Whether you want to explore the coastal villages of the Troll Peninsula on an exciting fly drive holiday or see the sights of the Diamond Circle with a small group of likeminded individuals – they are the perfect people to ask.
