Tanzania Holidays

africa
Tanzania holidays offer an unbeatable blend of wildlife viewing, scenery and culture as well as the opportunity for relaxation on Zanzibar’s beautiful beaches.

Tanzania’s north is an ideal first time safari destination with world-famous reserves and diverse landscapes. Seek out the wildebeest migration in Serengeti National Park, spot flamingos and lions by picturesque Lake Manyara or view the Big 5 within a volcanic caldera at the Ngorongoro Crater. Those in search of adventure can also climb Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak.

For an off the beaten track experience, head to the south of Tanzania to the less visited wildernesses of Nyerere (formerly Selous) and Ruaha, or west to spot chimpanzees in Mahale Mountains National Park.

Trailfinders offers a range of Tanzania holidays and we have a dedicated team of destination specialists who are a mine of information about what to do here, often with first-hand travel experience. Whether you want to explore Tanzania with your own private guide or on a small group safari, or are looking for the ideal resort for your Zanzibar holiday – they are the perfect people to ask

Each of Tanzania’s parks, reserves and regions boasts its own attractions. Combine a number of safari destinations to see a wide variety of wildlife and landscapes, or focus your holiday on a wildlife-rich area like the Serengeti National Park or on climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Tanzania map
Serengeti National Park
This beautiful vast expanse of grassy plains is an iconic safari destination and boasts a staggering density and diversity of wildlife including the Big 5 and the great wildebeest and zebra migration.
Ngorongoro Crater & Karatu
One of the world's largest volcanic calderas, the Ngorongoro Crater offers amazing game viewing including the Big 5, while the farmlands of nearby Karatu are a great place to stay.
Zanzibar & Beyond
Encircled by beautiful white sand beaches and turquoise waters, the exotic islands of Zanzibar and Pemba are situated just off the coast of mainland Tanzania and offer the ideal destination for a relaxing beach break.
Tarangire National Park
With grassy savannahs, huge swamps, the meandering Tarangire River and thousands of spectacular baobab trees, this park has incredibly varied landscapes.
Lake Manyara National Park
This small park enjoys a spectacular setting beside the Rift Valley escarpment.
Nyerere National Park
Vast, remote and wild, Nyerere National Park (formerly known as Selous Game) Reserve covers an area almost four times the size of the Serengeti and offers a slice of Africa that is off the radar of most travellers.
Ruaha National Park
Tanzania’s largest national park, Ruaha receives far fewer visitors than those in the north, ideal for those wanting to get off the beaten track.
Mahale Mountains National Park
Situated beside the blue waters of Lake Tanganyika, the soaring forested mountains of this national park are arguably the best place in Africa to track wild chimpanzees.
Mount Kilimanjaro
Towering above the surrounding plains, Africa’s highest mountain stands at 5,895m and a climb to its summit is one of the world’s greatest challenges.
Arusha
Surrounded by lush green countryside and coffee plantations, the sprawling city of Arusha is the gateway to the Serengeti and northern Tanzania’s other national parks.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT TANZANIA?

The best time to visit Tanzania is generally considered to be during the long dry season from June to October which offers excellent game viewing, cooler temperatures and clear skies, but also more visitors.

January to February is also a good time to visit Tanzania, mostly dry and when wildebeest calve in the southern Serengeti. However the migration herds can be seen somewhere in the Serengeti year round!

"Pole pole'" means 'slowly' in Swahili - this is the best way to tackle Mount Kilimanjaro and increase your odds of reaching the summit.

Visit Jozani Forest Reserve for a chance to see the Red Colubus Monkey close up. This is one of the few places they can be seen in the wild. Guides are also very knowledgable about the plant and tree species many of which are still used for their medicinal properties.

Carrie Hawes - Tanzania expert
Carrie Hawes

Make a detour to Olduvai Gorge, home to the earliest evidence of mankind in the world. The interesting museum here houses imprints of the famous Laetoli footprints left behind by our 3.6 million year old ancestors. In a funny kind of way, you can't help feeling like you've come home...
