Guyana holidays offer a true off the beaten track adventure and unspoilt natural wonders. It is the only English speaking country in South America and offers a fascinating cultural melting pot of European, Caribbean and Amerindian cultures.
Georgetown is Guyana’s beating heart whose highlights include a collection of wooden cathedrals, historic canals and colourful markets. But the real draw are the pristine rainforests, savannahs and wetlands which have seen limited tourism plus the mesmerising Kaieteur Falls.
Trailfinders offers a range of Guyana holidays and our expert travel consultants are a mine of information about what to do here, often with first-hand travel experience. Whether you want to explore on a sociable guided group tour, have elements which are on a private basis or are looking for advice on how to combine Guyana with a beautiful beach on the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia – they are the perfect people to ask.

Georgetown
Georgetown is Guyana’s capital city, located at the mouth of the mighty Demerara River where it flows into the Atlantic. Commonly referred to as the ‘Garden city of the Caribbean’ due to its many parks and gardens, this laid back city combines a Caribbean charm, British colonial style architecture and a thriving market scene.
Kaieteur Falls
Surrounded by vast rainforest in Guyana’s only national park, the simply spectacular Kaieteur Falls is the world’s most powerful and highest free-falling waterfall and the jewel in the crown of the country’s natural wonders. Legend has it that they were named after Kai, an Amerindian tribal chief who committed self-sacrifice by canoeing himself over the falls, and in doing so convinced the spirits to save his tribe from being destroyed by their enemies.
Iwokrama Forest Reserve
The Iwokrama Forest Reserve is one of the last pristine tropical forests in the world. This vast, protected area is an important base for conservation, scientific research and ecotourism. Learn about the reserve’s efforts to protect this fragile environment as well as the livelihoods of the indigenous people who have called this forest home for thousands of years. Immerse yourself in the treetops from the canopy walkway and look for Red Howler Monkeys and a large number of bird species.
Rupununi
The vast savannahs of the Rupununi cover the majority of southern Guyana and northern Brazil and is one of the last untouched wildernesses in the world. The rich landscape here varies from endless grasslands, biodiverse wetlands and rainforest-clad mountains. Wildlife is impressive and includes giant anteaters, giant river otters, black caiman, jaguars and over 500 species of birds. Stay in community run lodges where you will gain an insight into local Amerindian village life.

Cara Lodge
Georgetown
This popular hotel has a great location in the heart of Georgetown, located close to St George’s Cathedral.
Lying just above the equator, Guyana’s tropical climate means it is hot year round and as the majority of the country is covered by rainforest, you may experience rain at any time of the year.
There are two main wet seasons in the north of the country, from December to January and from May to June.
The rainy season in the south, including the Rupununi region, is from May to July.
