This lovely lodge was one of the first ecotourism properties to be built in Borneo and remains one of the best places from which to observe the Kinabatangan River’s abundant wildlife. While river cruises offer the most wildlife viewing opportunities, Sukau Rainforest Lodge also has its own jungle boardwalk for guests to explore with playful monkeys and impressive birdlife often being spotted around the property. The riverfront restaurant offers breakfast, lunch and dinner while the 20 fan cooled guest rooms are traditionally furnished using local materials and have all the modern comforts you would expect.

Trailfinders' Abbi Harris gives an insight into Sukau Rainforest Lodge
Sukau Rainforest Lodge Expert Review
Abbi Harris
The charming Sukau Rainforest Lodge exceeded all of my expectations! A boardwalk connects the different areas of the lodge and is carefully positioned around tall trees with draping vines, making you feel as though you are right in the middle of the jungle. On arrival we were greeted by silvered leaf monkeys in the trees right above us.
Staff were extremely welcoming and helpful, and guides were outstanding - we saw crocodiles, a variety of birdlife, and so many proboscis monkeys.
The restaurant is located directly on the banks of the Kinabatangan River, offering a relaxed setting to enjoy buffet meals which were simple but very good. Before early morning wildlife cruises, the lodge puts out tea/coffee and toast with a selection of spreads, where guests can later enjoy a buffet breakfast when they arrive back.
I stayed in a Borneo Villa which is well worth the upgrade as each offers a private balcony which looks out over the jungle. I did however also view the Superior Rooms and these are very nice as well.
And if it's good enough for Judi Dench & David Attenborough...
Top tip: Most of the boats which the lodge uses are open air, so I'd recommend bringing a dry bag with you to use during Kinabatangan River Cruises as when it rains in the rainforest... it really rains! A waterproof phone lanyard is also a brilliant item to bring if you like to take photos with a phone, as you can quickly take snaps and pop your phone away securely to keep it dry.
