Boasting a stunning location on the banks of the Nile, this legendary hotel has hosted distinguished guests since it first opened in 1899. Immortalised by Agatha Christie in her novel ’Death on the Nile’, the hotel oozes luxury and romance thanks to its rich and fascinating history.
The five bars and restaurants serve sumptuous cuisine in unique surroundings. Watch the sunset over the Khnum Temple and Elephantine Island at the Terrace, savour exquisite French dishes at the 1902 Restaurant under Arabian domes, or enjoy a traditional high tea at Palms while observing life along the Nile.
The rooms are luxuriously furnished and split between the Palace and Nile wings. Palace Rooms enjoy a balcony with garden or river views, whilst the Nile Rooms have a terrace overlooking the river.

Trailfinders' Carrie Hawes gives an insight into Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Aswan
Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Aswan Expert Review
Carrie Hawes
Wow! This iconic hotel is worth splashing out on and is up there along with some of the very best in the world. Think The Ritz in London, Raffles Singapore, the Peninsula Hong Kong. It oozes elegance & luxury with nods to its history everywhere. The rooms in the new block (we had a Nile River View Suite here) are surprisingly contemporary with stunning bathrooms. Genuinely the best river views from any room in Aswan - a view seemingly little changed from when Ms Christie wrote Death on the Nile from a suite here.
The pool was the perfect spot to relax after sightseeing and there’s a gorgeous spa with indoor pool and hammam for pampering if required. The food was great - our favourite restaurant was The Terrace with its fabulous Nile views.
The service everywhere from front office to the pool attendant was delightful. Everything was responded to with ‘it’s my pleasure madam’ and you got the impression that they really meant it. Tasteful evening entertainment provided too.
Top tip: in house guests can enjoy a free guided tour of the historic highlights (including Agatha Christie suite) of the hotel every day. No need to pre-book, just head to the reception at 5pm.
