Itinerary

Day 1 Washington DC
Arrive in the USA’s capital city, where historic monuments and cultural attractions mix with an array of charismatic neighbourhoods and a thriving food scene.

Days 2-3 Washington DC
Spend a few days admiring the famous federal buildings such as the Capitol and White House and discover the many impressive monuments including the Lincoln Memorial. The city is renowned for its collection of museums, particularly the fantastic Smithsonians. Head to Georgetown for shopping in historic surrounds or take a stroll by the lovely Capitol Riverfront, a particularly nice spot in the summer months. In the evening head to U Street or Adams Morgan for drinks and vibrant nightlife.

Day 4 Alexandria
Cross south over the Potomac River by train or water taxi and enjoy a day exploring Alexandria. Have a stroll through the charming Old Town complete with cobblestone streets, speciality boutiques and well-preserved 18th and 19th Century buildings. The city is home to many museums and historic attractions such as the Carlyle House Historic Park – a restored Georgian mansion with a pretty garden.

Day 5 Washington DC to Shenandoah NP
Pick up your car and drive through the countryside of Virginia to Shenandoah National Park. The park is beautifully situated along the Blue Ridge Mountains and is surrounded by vast forests, deep valleys, waterfalls, woodland and wildlife.

Days 6-7 Shenandoah National Park
Head onto the Skyline Drive for a scenic 105 mile drive through the forests and flora while keeping your eyes peeled for wildlife such as black bears, bobcats and white-tailed deer. The speed limit of 35 mph and pitstops along the way allows for a comfortable journey with plenty of time for the wondrous views. There are 265 unique hiking trails to embark on by foot, including a 101-mile portion of the awe-inspiring Appalachian Trail. Perhaps take a detour to nearby Luray Caverns to see Eastern USA’ largest and most impressive cave system.

Day 8 Shenandoah NP to Washington DC
Enjoy the sunrise at the park one last time before driving to Washington DC airport for your or journey home.

Optional Excursions: It’s easy to combine Washington with other East Coast cities such as New York and Philadelphia – just hop on board Amtrak’s Acela Express for a simple and quick train journey along the Eastern Seaboard.
