Itinerary
Day 1 Medan to Lake Toba
Upon arrival drive the scenic journey to Lake Toba, the world’s largest crater lake. Board a local ferry to Samosir Island in the centre of the lake, home to a Batak tribe.
Day 2 Lake Toba
Visit the ancient Batak tribal village of Ambarita, known for its unique stone chairs and beautiful architecture. Head to the village of Simanindo to discover the traditional village and small Batak museum. Cross the lake to visit the observation tower at Pangururan for breathtaking panoramic views over the lake.
Day 3 Lake Toba to Berastagi
Head to Tomok to view the tombs of King Sidabutar before catching a ferry and driving north to the charming town of Berastagi. Stop en route at the stunning Sipisopiso waterfall, one of the highest in Indonesia.
Day 4 Berastagi to Tangkahan
Sample exotic fruits at the bustling market and visit Berastagi’s Catholic church with its distinctive Batak architecture. Travel to the beautifully remote jungle settlement of Tangkahan where your lodge is reached by crossing a suspension footbridge over the river.
Day 5 Tangkahan to Bukit Lawang
Enjoy a short walk to the nearby elephant sanctuary and spend the morning with these magnificent creatures. This afternoon set off by jeep along the rough jungle tracks to Bukit Lawang.
Day 6 Bukit Lawang to Medan
Trek through lush green jungle along a river in search of wild orangutans and other primates. Bid farewell to the rainforest and drive back to Medan where you will visit a vibrant night market with a variety of street food on offer.
Day 7 Medan
Visit Medan’s main attractions including Sultan’s palace, the Great Mosque, and the Chinese temple of Gunung Timur, before transferring to the airport.
Additional Options: If you have additional time, why not continue your adventure on neighbouring island Java or add on a relaxing beach stay in one of Bali’s beach resorts?
