Itinerary
Day 1 San Jose
On arrival at San Jose airport take your complimentary transfer to your centrally located hotel in the heart of San Jose.
Day 2 San Jose to Tortuguero NP
Your Costa Rican adventure begins early this morning with a journey to the beautiful Tortuguero National Park on the east coast. Accessible only by boat or plane, Tortuguero’s vast labyrinth of canals is unspoilt and teeming with wildlife. After a long drive to the main pier and a small motorboat journey through the waterways, you will find yourself in your lodge on a tranquil trip of land in the main lagoon.
Day 3 Tortuguero NP
Rise early this morning to discover the extraordinary flora and fauna of Tortuguero by boat, led by an expert guide. This unique habitat is home to monkeys, caiman, iguanas, butterflies and over 300 species of bird! If you are lucky enough to be travelling from late July to October, you can take an optional excursion to visit the nesting site of the endangered Green turtle. Return to your lodge for a well-deserved breakfast before heading out again in the afternoon for another boat trip, or if you prefer you could take a short walking tour through the forest or simply relax and make the most of the lodge facilities.
Days 4-5 Tortuguero NP to Arenal
Leave Tortuguero behind and begin your journey to Arenal, passing huge banana, pineapple and sugar cane plantations on the way and stopping for lunch en route. Arenal is a diverse region of geothermal activity, waterfalls and tropical plants, and your premium lodge for the next two nights has its own natural hot springs you can enjoy after a day of travelling. The following day embark on a guided hike in Arenal 1968 Park passing lava fields and fascinating landmarks that have shaped the area’s topography. From the base of the volcano you will see spectacular views and spot the plentiful tropical birdlife. The rest of the day is at leisure to join in on one of the optional activities.
Days 6-7 Arenal to Monteverde
Visit the immense La Fortuna Waterfall on this morning’s hike and maybe take a refreshing dip in the pool below. Afterwards, cross the UNESCO World Heritage listed Tilaran Mountain Range into Costa Rica’s famous cloud forests. As you ascend the hills towards Monteverde you will see incredible views of the Gulf of Nicoya below. Monteverde’s high altitude is home to a complex eco-system where plants thrive, particularly the orchid. The following day take a trip to the Cloud Forest Reserve to spot the vast array of animal and plant life before visiting the ecological park of Selvatura by treetop walkway.
Days 8-9 Monteverde to Rio Perdido
This morning you will travel to Rio Perdido, meaning the Lost River, perched on a raised rocky peninsular where two canyons meet in the Guanacaste region and was once a gathering place for ancient indigenous peoples of the area. Private tropical forest spans 600 acres where you can try some thrilling adventurous activities such as zip lining or white water tubing. You may also spot families of Howler monkeys or White-faces Capuchin monkeys! The following day enjoy a guided walk of the area before more free time to get your adrenaline racing with more optional activities or simply relax in the natural mineral pools.
Days 10-11 Rio Perdido to Tamarindo
Say farewell to the beautiful Rio Perdido and head to the Nicoya Peninsular and one of Costa Rica’s most famous beaches, Tamarindo. Check in to your beachfront hotel and enjoy the sun, sea and heavenly views for the next two nights. On day 11 toast to your amazing adventure with new friends with sunset drinks on the beach.
Days 12-13 Tamarindo to San Jose
Enjoy the last couple of hours on the beach before making the journey back to San Jose where you will spend one final night. Your trip comes to an end after breakfast on day 13, and you can make use of the complimentary transfer back to the airport.
