Itinerary
Day 1 Auckland to Waitomo
Under the rolling hills of Waitomo lies an extensive underground cave system. Best explored on foot or by boat, you can see giant stalagmites and stalactites and millions of twinkling glowworms.
Days 2-3 Waitomo to New Plymouth
With magnificent snow-capped Mount Taranaki as its backdrop, sunny New Plymouth is a great base from which to explore the region and Egmont National Park. With a resemblance to Mount Fuji, this spectacular dormant volcano is one of the most symmetrical in the world and has varied hiking tracks to discover through the verdant rainforest and native Kamahi trees found on the lower slopes.
Day 4 New Plymouth to Tongariro NP
Venture inland via the rugged and winding Forgotten World Highway. Boasting secluded passes, towering gorges and spectacular vistas, this route is ideal for experienced drivers truly looking for the path less travelled. As you arrive in Tongariro National Park, marvel at the three volcanoes that dominate the landscape.
Day 5 Tongariro NP
Today embark on a day walk of one of the most iconic and legendary ’Great Walks of New Zealand’ ‐ Tongariro Crossing. Your local guide will lead your group across mountain passes and along scenic trails featuring panoramic views of the volcanic scenery. En route you will encounter vividly coloured lakes, steaming volcanic vents and ancient lava flows.
Days 6-7 Tongariro NP to the Kapiti Coast
Close to charming seaside villages and sweeping golden sands, luxurious 5★ Greenmantle Estate on the beautiful Kapiti Coast is the perfect spot for relaxation. Head out to Kapiti Island, a nature reserve hosting many of New Zealand’s rare bird and plant life.
Day 8 Kapiti Coast to Wellington
Drive the short distance to Wellington and continue your onward journey.
