Itinerary
Day 1 Amritsar
Transfer from
the airport to your hotel in Amritsar for a welcome meeting and a tour
of the sacred and serene Gold Temple.
Days 2-3 Amritsar
to Dharamsala
Drive across the
plains of the Punjab as you make your way to Dharamsala, the home of the
Dalai Lama. An orientation walk on arrival will introduce you to the area
and then the following day will be free to explore the local town. The
Dalai Lama makes occasional public appearances which you may be lucky enough
to attend, alternatively you could witness the spectacular views from the
Bhagsunath Temple in the surrounding hills.
Day 4 Dharmasala
to Mandi
Continue on to
the next stop in the small temple town of Mandi, held scared by both Hindus
and Buddhists. On arrival head out to explore the town and the nearby Beas
River, exploring some of the 81 temples located in the area.
Day 5 Mandi
to Manali
Follow the Beas
River further north to the picturesque town of Manali, your home for the
night. Along the way stop off to explore the quirky Naggar Castle which
overlooks the valley.
Days 6-7 Manali
to Keylong
Marvel at the
impressive views of the Himalayas as you cross Rohtang Pass enroute to
your home for the next two nights in the settlement of Keylong. The following
day set out to visit the impressive Shashur and Khardang monasteries.
Day 8 Keylong
to Jespa
Travel on from
Keylong with a short drive to the town of Jespa. The rest of the day will
be at your leisure to explore the mountainous landscape.
Day 9 Jespa
to Sarchu
Climb higher in
to the mountains today as you follow the Baralacha La Pass before descending
to Sarchu. You will spend the night here in a campsite with pre-erected
tents that come complete with beds, bedding and toilet facilities.
Day 10 Sarchu
to Leh
Set off towards
from Sarchu as you wind your way through the series of 21 hair-pin bends
that make up the Gata loops. Continue past the highest point on the trip
by crossing the Tangland La Pass before finishing the day at your home
for the next 3 nights in the Tibetan village of Leh.
Days 11-12
Leh
Spend the first
full day in Leh enjoying the spectacle of the annual Phyang festival which
draws in pilgrims from around the area and features sacred dances alongside
colourful displays. The following day brings an opportunity to visit the
local gompas (monasteries) of Thiskey, Taktak and Hemis, which is the largest
in the region. This tour also runs on other dates during the Hemis festival,
speak to your travel consultant if you would like to know more about this
option.
Days 13-14
Leh to Alchi
After departing
Leh, any thrill seekers can opt to White Water Raft along the Indus River
en-route to your home for the next two nights in Alchi before visiting
its historic Gompa to discover the magnificent Kasmiri Buddhist artwork
which resides there. The following day you can partake in a number of optional
walks to the Saspol caves and the Rizong Gompa.
Day 15 Alchi
to Leh
Take part in one
last optional morning walk to see the beautiful murals and 10 meter golden
Buddha of the Likir Gompa before returning to Leh where you will have the
afternoon at leisure. You could perhaps use this time to walk to the Shankar
Gompa or visit the ruins of the 17th Century Old Palace.
Days 16-17
Leh to Delhi
Catch an early
morning flight to Delhi where you will get to know this bustling metropolis
with a city tour taking in the new and old regions, from the splendour
of the Presidents Palace to the electric hubbub of the Chandi Chowk Bazaar.
Your tour ends the following morning after breakfast with a transfer to
the airport.
