Itinerary
Day 1 Barcelona
Arrive in Barcelona and transfer to your hotel. Later get to know your travel director and fellow travellers at a local restaurant over dinner.
Day 2 Barcelona
After a relaxed start, join a tour of Barcelona’s impressive Old Town. Travel through the medieval maze of the Gothic Quarter, a tangle of streets and squares just behind the old cathedral and visit the Passeig de Grácia. Continue on to Gaudi’s Sagrada Família, where giant mosaic spires pierce the sky like a jewelled crown.
Day 3 Barcelona
Enjoy a full day at leisure to explore. Consider a stroll along the famous Las Ramblas or explore Gaudi’s fascinating Park Guell. Perhaps choose an optional excursion to the sacred mountain of Montserrat, Catalonia’s most important pilgrimage site for a thousand years.
Day 4 Barcelona to San Sebastian
Journey west to Zaragoza where the four towers of El Pilar soar over the banks of the mighty Río Ebro. Continue to Pamplona, famous for the Running of the Bulls festival and perhaps stroll to the famous Estafeta Street. Travel to seaside San Sebastian to discover the city’s rich gastronomic tradition with am exploration of the Old Town and a traditional dinner.
Day 5 Bilbao
Visit Bilbao and the sensuous Guggenheim Museum. On return, join a local expert in admiring the crescent shaped La Concha Bay from the heights of Monte Igueldo. After taking in the views, enjoy a guided tour of the Old Quarter. See the numbered balconies of the Plaza de la Constitucion, a reminder of when bull fights were held in the square.
Day 6 San Sebastian
Enjoy a day at leisure to stroll along San Sebastian’s boardwalk. Perhaps join an optional excursion to the nearby French village of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, known as the jewel of the Basque Country. Explore the church where The Sun King, Louis XIV, married the Spanish princess Maria Teresa.
Day 7 San Sebastian to Madrid
Journey through the Pyrenees foothills and the land of ‘El Cid’ to Burgos where you can see the cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Continue to the plateau of New Castile and Spain’s elegant capital of Madrid.
Day 8 Madrid
A local expert will show you the Royal Palace, the Plaza de España, the grandiose Cibeles Fountain and Puerta del Sol. Then enjoy a visit to the palatial Prado Museum, one of the world’s greatest art galleries with works by El Greco, Velazquez and Goya. The afternoon is free to explore as you wish. Perhaps travel to Segovia and visit the 14th Century Alcazar to see paintings, tapestries and weaponry of the Spanish medieval era.
Day 9 Segovia
Venture northwest to visit the fascinating city of Segovia. Walk the medieval streets of this fortified city with your Local Expert and see the 14th Century Alcazar Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After returning to Madrid, you are at leisure. Make the most of your final night as you join your fellow travellers for a Celebration Dinner at a local restaurant.
Day 10 Madrid
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight home.
