Itinerary
Day 1 Zagreb
Arrive in Zagreb, Croatia’s capital city and one of the oldest Central European cities. Make your way to your hotel and check in. Spend the afternoon wandering around the city ensuring you stop at Ban Josip Jelacic Square, one of the most iconic places in the heart of the city. Take part in Zagreb’s wonderful café culture as you relax and take in the lovely architecture in your surroundings.
Day 2 Zagreb
After breakfast, set out to explore the city starting with the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the largest sacred building in Croatia and appreciate the elegant spires which adorn the city’s skyline. Meander the amazing labyrinth of narrow streets, and listen out for the Gric Cannon’s fire, the traditional way of acknowledging the time at midday. Climb the Lotrscak Tower to treat yourself to fabulous panoramic views of the city. Take a ride on the world’s shortest funicular railway which connects the upper and lower town before heading over to Lenuci’s Horseshoe, a system of beautiful parks and squares, housing the incredible botanical gardens.
Day 3 Zagreb
Today, spend the day in Medvednica, the ruins of a medieval town located on a hillside in a dense forest only a half an hour walk from Zagreb’s city outskirts. Maybe take the cable car to the summit and admire the gorgeous views of the city and the natural surroundings. Alternatively, hike one of the trails to view the stunning waterfalls, ravines, caves and picturesque churches. Why not try some traditional local specialities such as bean soup with sausages?
Day 4 Zagreb to Ljubljana
Rise early in order to catch your train to Ljubljana, Slovenia’s capital city, nicknamed the ‘Green Heart of Europe’. Drop your bags at your hotel and head out to experience all that Ljubljana has to offer. Stroll down the river path, taking into the beautiful views of this charming city at every turn. Amble over the uniquely designed Triple Bridge to Presernov Trg, an attractive square boasting elegant architecture. Choose to browse the eclectic shops or relax with a coffee and lovely slice of traditional cake. This afternoon, decide to take the funicular up to Ljubljana Castle, a 16th Century structure abundant with history showcasing a plethora of Slovenian artifacts over the millennia.
Day 5 Ljubljana
Spend the day discovering some of the amazing sites close to the capital. Take the tour bus to Postojna Caves, a remarkable network of caves found deep underground. Ride the little electric train through the caves as you listen to your guide reveal the fascinating narratives surrounding the area’s geographical formations. This afternoon, you will be escorted to the enchanting Predjama Castle, a medieval cave castle which has been perched in a cliff for more than 800 years. Wander the halls and find out why this unique structure is considered one the most romantic places in the country.
Day 6 Ljubljana
Join your tour to encounter the serene beauty of Slovenia’s most famous lakes. Delight in the 7km scenic walk around Lake Bled, perhaps stopping off at one of the restaurants or cafés dotted around the edge to indulge in a large slice of the iconic Bled cream cake. Climb the steps to reach Bled Castle and explore this fairytale structure while savouring the breathtaking views of the lake and mountains. Hop on a little cruise over to Bled Island and make your way to the emblematic church to ring the church bells. Continue to Lake Bohinj, considered one of Slovenia’s hidden gems, and opt to walk around the lake. End the day by visiting Vintgar Gorge the gateway to Triglav National Park. Cross the sturdy trail of wooden bridges over waterfalls, pools and rapids and absorb the striking natural allure of your surroundings.
Day 7 Ljubljana
Spend a leisurely morning pottering around the main square or taking one final stroll along the picturesque river before heading to the airport for your onward journey.
Additional Options: With a few extra days, why not spend more time in the Slovenian lakes or Triglav National Park to participate in some sporting activities including kayaking, hiking and boat trips?
