Itinerary

Day 1  Reykjavik
Arrive in Iceland and make your own way to Reykjavik. This compact city is well worth exploring. Make time to see the striking Hallgrimskirkja Church, an example of expansionist architecture with great views from the tower, before exploring the narrow streets of the downtown area which are filled with quirky shops and hidden bars. Meet your fellow travellers and tour leader this evening.

Day 2  Reykjavik to Kirkjubaejarklaustur
Leave Reykjavik behind, journeying along the southern highway through the beautiful and vast countryside. Stop by Seljalandsfoss, a spectacular 60m high waterfall and, if it’s not too icy, there may be the chance to walk behind the cascade and see the waterfall’s power up close. The next stop is Skogafoss Waterfall, offering another great photo opportunity. After, choose to stop at the nearby Skoga Museum, which details centuries of local life in the area and provides an insight into how Icelanders survived in this harsh environment over the ages. After lunch, cross the vast Myrdalssandur floodplains, created by a river which formed after a volcanic eruption. Later, head to the small village of Kirkjubaejarklaustur, where you will stay for the next two nights.

Day 3  Kirkjubaejarklaustur
Head out across the massive Skeidararsandur floodplains towards Falljokull glacier where you can go for a short but spectacular walk, aided by crampons and ice axes. The glacier offers amazing photo opportunities with its walls of brilliant blue ice. Continue to Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon and take a walk along the lakeside. The lagoon is dotted with icebergs and is one of Iceland’s most popular sights. Afterwards, head back to the hotel for the evening.

Day 4  Kirkjubaejarklaustur to Reykjavik
Travel along the south coast past the Eyjafjallajokull Volcano, before heading inland. Visit the Fridheimar Greenhouse for a unique lunch stop before travelling to Gullfoss, one of Europe’s most powerful waterfalls and another example of how different each of Iceland’s many waterfalls can be. Afterwards, travel to nearby Geysir, home to the famous hot springs which erupt roughly every 10 minutes. Today’s final stop is Thingvellir National Park, where two continental tectonic plates meet. Arrive in Reykjavik this evening for a final night with the group to toast the end of this short but incredible adventure.

Day 5  Reykjavik
After breakfast this morning, you will be transferred to the airport for your  flight home.
