Itinerary
Day 1 Cologne
Arrive in Cologne and make your way to your hotel. After checking in and dropping off your backs, head out to discover what this historic city has to offer. Why not start with the iconic Cologne Cathedral, the largest Gothic church in northern Europe, the most visited tourist attraction in Germany and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which notoriously took over 500 years to construct? Take in the beautiful, vaulted ceilings and the intricately designed stained glass windows as you wander around this remarkable structure. This evening, decide to dine in a local restaurant and sample some sumptuous traditional food.
Day 2 Cologne
After a leisurely breakfast, set about exploring the diversely themed Christmas markets dotted around the city which are regarded as some of the best in the country. Start with the lovely ‘market of hearts’ around the cathedral, comprising over 130 stalls and boasting a Christmas tree decorated with 50,000 lights. Perhaps choose to board the hop on hop off mini train, Christmas Market Express, which stops at four of the most festive markets. Indulge your whimsical side and take a ride on the ferris wheel, glide on the ice under the glimmering lights at the Heinzelmännchen market, or delight in a soothing glass (or two) of aromatic mulled wine as you peruse the cheerfully decorated wooden chalets for gifts, souvenirs and delicious delights.
Day 3 Cologne
Today, meander the cobblestone pathways of the historical Aldstadt (old town), admire the coloured buildings, the picturesque courtyards and the multicoloured twinkling lights adorning the trees. Choose to visit the chocolate museum to learn how chocolate is made and perhaps fill your bags with some tasty treats. Why not head to the Kölsch brewery for a tour around the beer halls and perhaps sample some fresh beer or go to Ludwig Museum to view one of the largest collections in the world of Picasso’s work.
Day 4 Cologne
Spend the morning enjoying a final stroll around the city, soaking up the cheery scenery and inhaling the aromas of the fresh local cuisine before your onward journey.
Additional Options: With a few extra days, perhaps travel by Eurostar from London and stop in Brussels to visit the Winter Wonders event consisting of more than 2km of festive fun.
