Itinerary
Day 1 Ulaanbaatar
Arrive in Ulaanbaatar and transfer to your hotel. Relax before meeting your fellow travellers and tour leader this evening.
Day 2 Ulaanbaatar to Amarbayasgalant
Start your adventure on a long drive through beautiful Mongolian countryside in Furgon’s, reliable and sturdy Russian vans, well equipped to tackle the Mongolian roads. There will be plenty of photo stops to capture the stunning scenery
as you continue to a ger camp where you will be spending the night.
Day 3 Amarbayasgalant to Selenge River
Head to the lovely Selenge River through the copper mining town of Erdenet. There may be opportunities to spot some wildlife along the way such as marmots and many different species of birds. Arrive at your ger camp in the afternoon, take a walk up to the Togoo Uul (Pot Mountain) - an extinct volcano looming over the surrounding steppe and marvel at the incredible landscape.
Day 4 Selenge River to Ikh Uul
Journey to the mountainous outskirts of Ikh Uul for your first stay with a local nomad family. A rare opportunity to see how the modem Mongolian nomads are preserving an ancient way of life whilst embracing some elements of modernity. Enjoy preparing dinner with your host family and some stargazing before retiring for the night.
Day 5 Ikh Uul to Khovsgol Lake
After breakfast with your host family, continue on another long drive today across some rough terrain to Khovsgol Lake, considered as Mongolia’s most beautiful destination. Once here, witness Khovsgol Lake’s spectacular scenery, stunning fir forests, lush green grasslands and meadows with wildflowers. Tonight you will stay at a tourist ger camp near the lake.
Day 6 Khovsgol Lake
Today is a free day to explore this striking region, take a hike up to one of the nearby peaks or perhaps take a boat trip out on the lake. Spend the day as you wish after many days on the road.
Day 7 Khovsgol Lake to Shine Ider
Back on the road as you set off early through the town of Murun onto Shine Ider, Your second family homestay of the trip.
Days 8-9 Shine Ider to Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake
This morning after breakfast drive to Lake Terkhiin Tsagaan your home for the next two nights. This natural volcanic lake surrounded by mountains, is a surreal and memorable sight, you will drive up to one of the volcanic craters and hike to the top for spectacular views. There are plenty of nice trails to walk during your two night stay here, so make the most of this relaxing break from the road.
Day 10 Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake to Tsenkher
Head to the Tsenkher Hot Springs situated in the valley of the Delger River, the springs are popular with both locals and travellers. On the way stop off at Tsetserleg, a provincial town with a local market and a unique little museum housed in a former temple, which you'll visit with a local guide. At this stop, there's the chance to wander around the town for a glimpse at what provincial Mongolian life is like.
Day 11 Tsenkher
Spend a day at leisure, relax, explore, or simply laze about in the thermal waters of these invigorating natural hot springs.
Day 12 Tsenkher to Khogno Khan
Drive to Karakorum, the ancient capital of Mongolia. Visit the Erdene Zuu Monastery, the first centre of Lama Buddhism in Mongolia, later in the afternoon arrive in Khogno Khan where you will stay at a tourist ger camp.
Day 13 Khogno Khan
Enjoy a camel trek along the dunes, an ideal way to experience this dramatic landscape. At your ger camp, there maybe the opportunity to practice the art of Mongolian archery under the tutorage of some local experts. It's certainly much harder than it looks, requiring good strength and aim! The afternoon is free to spend as you please.
Day 14 Khogno Khan to Ulaanbaatar
Travel back across the rolling grasslands to Ulaanbaatar and spend some time at leisure, there might be the chance to shop for some local handicrafts such as cashmere and felt products, or check out some more of the city's sights and museums. In the evening enjoy a Mongolian Cultural Show & dinner with your fellow travellers.
Day 15 Ulaanbaatar
After breakfast your tour comes to an end.
