Itinerary
Day 1 Okayama
On arrival in Okayama, the day is free to explore the city. Why not head to Okayama Castle, also known as ‘Crow Castle’ for its dramatic black exterior. Alternatively visit Koraku-en Gardens, situated on an island in the Asahi-gawa River which flows through the city. Originally laid out in 1686, today they are considered one of the most exceptionally beautiful landscaped gardens in Japan.
Day 2 Kurashiki
Today take a short train ride to neighbouring Kurashiki for a full day tour with your private guide. Whilst the city is one of the largest in the Okayama Prefecture, it has a beautifully preserved historic quarter. After exploring the atmospheric streets, make a quick detour to Achi Shrine, a 1,700 year old Shinto shrine that sits on top of Mount Tsurugata (a short hike is necessary). Later visit the Ohara Museum of Art, the oldest museum of western art in Japan which includesrenowned works by El Greco, Renoir and Picasso. Finally, stop by Ivy Square, a cultural complex of galleries and museums on the site of Japan’s first cotton mill, hailing back to the 1880s. Catch the train back to Okayama.
