Itinerary
Days 1-3 Broome
Whilst taking time to relax before your epic journey ahead, you can learn about Broome’s iconic pearling history around the town and make sure you catch a golden sunset sweeping across the sands on Cable Beach.
Day 4 Broome to Derby
Set off for Derby, a small country town where boab trees line the streets. Take the heritage walk to see the town’s historical sites including the Old Derby Gaol and Wharfingers House Museum before exploring the mudflats and mangroves.
Day 5 Derby to Bell Gorge
Stretching over 400 miles in length, your first stop along on the legendary ’Gibb’ is the rising black cliffs of Windjana Gorge, where you’ll discover ancient fossil swirls imprinted in the rocks and freshwater crocodiles sunbathing by the waterholes.
Day 6 Bell Gorge
Nestled within the King Leopold Ranges, Bell Gorge is one of the most famous along the route. Spend the day hiking along the creek, swimming in refreshing pools and admiring the majestic waterfalls.
Day 7 Bell Gorge to Halls Creek
Venture deeper into the east of the Kimberley to Halls Creek where you will spend the night – a small, simple desert town surrounded by an array of stunning natural attractions.
Days 8-9 Halls Creek to El Questro Wilderness Park
El Questro Wilderness Park awaits at the tail end of the road. Here you’ll stay close to striking Emma Gorge, known for its deep pools and thermal waters.
Days 10-11 El Questro Wilderness Park to Kununurra
Enjoy the relative civilisation of Kununurra and perhaps visit immense Lake Argyle, the largest expanse of water in Australia.
Day 12 Kununurra to Timber Creek
It’s time to leave the Western territory to explore the lush, tropical Top End. Break up the longer drive by staying overnight on a working cattle station near Timber Creek.
Days 13-14 Timber Creek to Katherine
Poised on the banks of the Katherine River, this outback town is ideally placed for your cruise through the imposing cliff walls of wondrous Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge.
Days 15-16 Katherine to Kakadu NP
Australia’s largest national park is vast, varied and brimming with Aboriginal culture, thundering falls and abundant birdlife. Enjoy bush walks, cruise through the wetlands and discover the outdoor rock art galleries at Nourlangie and Ubirr.
