Itinerary
Days 1-3 Seattle
Soak up the café culture, visit locally-owned breweries and stroll along the waterfront in this charismatic city. Fresh produce and locally made delicacies are showcased at the iconic Pike Place Market.
Day 4 Seattle to Portland
Collect your car and head south, crossing the Columbia River which marks the border between Washington state and Oregon. Enjoy Portland, a free spirited town famed for its independent businesses and gourmet, ‘farm-to-fork’ cuisine.
Days 5-6 Portland to Gleneden Beach
Discover Oregon’s scenic byways and densely wooded mountains en route to the sand dunes of the Pacific coast. Spend a day relaxing at your resort or enjoy the wide and expansive beach.
Day 7 Gleneden Beach to Crescent City
A full day’s drive down the coast takes you over the border and into California: the Golden State.
Day 8 Redwood NP
From Crescent City take a day trip into this protected haven for the mighty sequoia tree. Once in the park discover its amazing diversity, with a dense and varied forest, wild rivers and miles of rugged coastline.
Days 9-10 Crescent City to San Francisco
The wild mountains and coastal scenery, so typical of Oregon, finally give way to the rolling hills and bays of California. Stop for a night in the pretty town of Fort Bragg, on the Mendocino Coast, to break your journey. The next day, wind your way through California’s famous winelands before arriving in San Francisco.
Days 11-12 San Francisco
San Francisco’s recent but intriguing history is on show at every turn: the ornate ‘Painted Lady’ houses of Alamo Square, the imposing shape of Alcatraz, the exciting cuisine of Chinatown and the nostalgic charms of Haight-Ashbury.
Days 13-14 San Francisco to Monterey
Continue south on Highway 1, stopping for lunch in Santa Cruz with its famous boardwalk. A little further on is laidback Monterey with a historic wharf and plenty of activities.
Day 15 Monterey to Santa Barbara
The Big Sur of Highway 1 is reckoned to be one of the most beautiful stretches of road in the world. Pass seaside towns like Pismo Beach, and maybe make a stop at the incredible Hearst Castle, before you arrive at Spanish influenced Santa Barbara.
Day 16 Santa Barbara
The balmy southern Californian climate matches the white walls and terracotta roofs of this photogenic seaside town.
Days 17-18 Santa Barbara to Los Angeles
Swaying palm trees give way to the excitement of Los Angeles. Party in West Hollywood, take a studio tour at Universal Studios or chill out by the coast in Santa Monica.
Day 19 Los Angeles to San Diego
Beyond the traffic of Los Angeles a series of lovely seaside towns stretch down the coast to San Diego. Why not stop en route in upmarket Newport Beach or Carlsbad?
Days 20-22 San Diego
At the southern border of California you complete your exploration of the Pacific coast. Great beaches, a Mexican Old Town and the vibrant Gaslamp Quarter provide plenty of entertainment ahead of your flight back home.
