Journey

Journey
Evocative and mesmerising, the Silk Road has spellbound travellers for centuries. Travel in the footsteps of Marco Polo as you traverse part of this iconic trade route to truly experience the exotic sights and sounds of this ancient road. Early traders would have travelled by horse and cart on this long journey to the distant empire of Cathay and today, no single train traverses this spectacular route so you will travel by a combination of overnight sleeper trains and private vehicles across Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan’s less travelled sections of the Silk Road.

You will begin your Silk Road journey in either the imperial opulence of Beijing, China or in the very heart of the trade route in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Your central stop on any tour will be perhaps the most evocative city of the Silk Road, Samarkand, once the hub for all traders who travelled this iconic trade route. Along the way, Visit some of the world’s oldest bazaars, discover rarely visited valleys, navigate over barren mountains and stay overnight in traditional yurts for a taste of rural life.

Life on Board

While travel by train across China may not be the most luxurious, it is the best way to travel the great distances across the country with the opportunity to sit back and soak up the changing landscapes, plus to meet the locals as it is their main form of transport.

Generally, compartments are open-plan, clean and are fitted with padded three-tiered berths (6 to a compartment). Sleeping essentials (sheet, pillow and blanket) are provided and basic bathroom facilities with toilets and wash basins are at the end of each carriage. Safe, hot drinking water is readily available through the journey, although it is recommended to bring your own mug and cutlery with you as you will be making your own meals in your cabin (regular supply stops are made on the tours). Food will be available to purchase on board, but snacks are always a welcome addition to some of the longer journeys.

In the more remote areas of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, private and public buses, plus the odd public train will be used for day journeys to each new destination along the route.
