The Amazon & Los Llanos Holidays

south & central america
These regions of Colombia are a little off the main tourist trail, but they are well worth exploring if you have the time. For the adventurous traveller, especially any wildlife enthusiasts, these remote areas of Colombia allow a unique insight into this diverse country.

The vast grasslands of Los Llanos will transport you to another era where cowboys (or llaneros) ruled the land. Here you will find a varied landscape of wetlands, savannahs, rivers and forest, which attracts an extensive array of wildlife including giant anteaters, capybaras, caimans, monkeys and over 350 exotic bird species.

While, in the south east, the little visited Colombian Amazon offers an insight into a way of life that has changed little over hundreds of years. Although the Amazon actually covers a huge part of Colombia’s territory (over one-third!) it is largely inaccessible, which for many adds to its mystery and appeal. This remote region is home to an astonishing array of wildlife and several indigenous communities.

Trailfinders offers a range of Colombia holidays and our expert travel consultants are a mine of information about what to do here, often with first-hand travel experience. Whether you feel like cruising the waterways in search of caiman and capybaras, hiking through the rainforest or immersing yourself in local culture - they are the perfect people to ask.

WHERE TO GO IN THE AMAZON & LOS LLANOS

Each region of Colombia boasts its own attractions and this area is no different. You could spend days exploring the vast landscapes of Los Llanos. One day you might be horseback riding, the next tracking pumas or learning to herd cattle with local llaneros (cowboys). In wet season you can also canoe the flooded waterways, whilst dry season offers the option of jeep safaris.

Or you could just as easily travel to the south-east of the country and fly into the city of Leticia, the hop off point to explore the unmistakably tropical territory of the Amazon. Here you can discover native wildlife and visit the local communities, many who still live a traditional hunter-gather existence. As with most Amazon experiences there are vast differences between wet and dry season, with water flood levels varying dramatically depending on the season.

See the tiles below for a little more information on each destination. Alternatively, if you are looking for some inspiration, give us a call an speak to one of our expert travel consultants.
