Read on for our guide to the different trekking options in Peru.
The Inca Trail
One of the world’s most iconic hiking routes, this trek follows part of the original stone footpath built by the Incas to access Machu Picchu from Cusco. Over four days you’ll encounter spectacular mountain vistas, lush forested hillsides and historic Inca sites. Arrive at Intipunku, known as the Sun Gate, on the final day for a magical first view over Machu Picchu.
A limited number of permits per day are issued for the Inca Trail so we recommend booking early, and please note that the Inca Trail is closed in February.
Altitude: Maximum 4,215m
Trekking Duration: Four days point to point trekking, including full porterage.
Trekking Accommodation: Three nights camping.
Salkantay Route
A quieter alternative to the Inca Trail which arguably offers even more dramatic mountainous scenery. Climb to the top of a high mountain pass and enjoy the magnificent views of stunning glaciers and impressive Mount Salkantay. The route descends amongst cloud forests and coffee plantations before revealing a breathtaking first view of Machu Picchu.
Altitude: Maximum 4,600m
Trekking Duration: Four to six days point to point trekking, including full porterage.
Trekking Accommodation: Three to five nights camping or mountain lodge accommodation.
Lares Valley Treks
Experience beautiful scenery and rural Andean communities with a trek in the Lares Valley. A wonderful alternative to the classic Inca Trail, you will hike through verdant green valleys dotted with turquoise lagoons, visit pretty villages with traditional thatched roof stone houses and herds of llamas, and learn about the indigenous Andean way of life from local people.
Altitude: Maximum 4,460m
Trekking Duration: Three to five days point to point trekking, including full porterage.
Trekking Accommodation: Two to four nights camping or mountain lodge accommodation.
Camping Treks
Get back to basics and camp under the stars as you trek through the spectacular landscapes of Peru. While the tents provided will be of good quality and well maintained, campsites on all trekking routes are basic with limited facilities. You will only need to carry a small daypack as we arrange porters who will provide trek support, transporting all your personal belongings and equipment as well as setting up camp.
Choose to share your experience and trek as part of a small group or enjoy the services of a private guide throughout. For the ultimate camping experience ask for details of the premium service option which provides additional comfort with upgraded camping equipment and gourmet cuisine.
Lodge Treks
Experience the thrill of trekking surrounded by some of the most stunning scenery in the world whilst spending each night in the comfort of a lodge rather than a tent. Both the Salkantay and Lares Valley treks offer charming lodges set in picturesque locations along the route. In these cosy abodes all bedrooms have en suite bathrooms with hot water, there are communal spaces to relax with beautiful views and delicious evening meals served with wine. In addition, most lodges boast an outdoor Jacuzzi in which to rest aching limbs after a challenging day of hiking.
One Day Hikes
For those who are short on time but still want to embrace the adventure of trekking through the Andes mountain range, we can offer a number of day hikes through the region. The One Day Inca Trail is the perfect option for those who wish to experience just a small section of this famous trek. Travel by train to KM 104 to begin the walk up to the impressive Inca site of Wiñay Wayna before joining the Inca Trail path to the Sun Gate for an unforgettable first view over Machu Picchu.
Alternatively, there are a number of hiking routes in the Sacred Valley to lesser-known sites and through impressive scenery, just ask your travel consultant for more details.
