Read on for our seasonal guide to help you decide on the best time to visit Argentina.
Spring (September to November)
Spring is one of the best times to visit Argentina, offering blooming flowers, mild temperatures, and low humidity. Buenos Aires, the capital, is particularly pleasant at this time of the year, with purple-hued jacaranda trees lining the streets and the parks. The weather is ideal for exploring the city’s colourful neighbourhoods, enjoying outdoor cafes, and attending cultural events. Spring is also a great time to spot whales and penguins in areas like Península Valdés.
Highlights:
◦ Buenos Aires’ cultural festivals and street fairs
◦ Mendoza’s wine harvest festivals
◦ Iguazu Falls, with lower water levels but fewer crowds
Summer (December to February)
If you love the sun and the outdoors, then the summer is the best time to visit Argentina. This is the peak tourist season, specifically in coastal areas and popular destinations such as Patagonia. Temperatures can be quite high at this time of the year, particularly in Buenos Aires and the northern regions, and it can get very humid.
Highlights:
◦ Patagonia’s remarkable landscapes and outdoor activities, such as hiking the Fitzroy Mountain range and exploring the Perito Moreno Glacier.
◦ Beach resorts along the Atlantic coast such as Mar del Plata.
◦ Festivals like Carnaval in Gualeguaychu.
Autumn (March to May)
Autumn is arguably the best time to visit Argentina, with mild temperatures and fewer tourists. The fall foliage in areas like the Lake District adds a striking touch to an already magnificent landscape, painting the area in a spectacular array of reds, oranges and yellows. Hiking in areas like El Chalten is also a popular thing to do at this time of the year.
Highlights:
◦ The Lake District, especially around Bariloche, with its vivid autumn scenery.
◦ Wine tasting in Mendoza (Argentina’s premier wine-producing region) during the grape harvest.
◦ Pleasant weather for exploring Buenos Aires and other cities.
Winter (June to August)
Winter in Argentina brings cooler temperatures and the opportunity for snow sports in the Andes. While the northern regions of the country stay relatively mild, Patagonia and the Lake District transform into winter wonderlands. This is the best time to visit Argentina for skiing and snowboarding.
Highlights:
◦ Skiing and snowboarding in Bariloche, Las Leñas and other ski resorts.
◦ Whale watching in Puerto Madryn, as southern right whales migrate to the region’s waters.
◦ Exploring the less crowded but still vibrant Buenos Aires and experiencing the annual tango festival.
Other considerations
Patagonia: The best time to visit Argentinian Patagonia is from November to March when the weather is milder, and the days are longer. However, if you’re interested in skiing or snowboarding then the winder months are ideal.
Iguazu Falls: Iguazu Falls can be visited year-round, but for the most impressive water flow, the rainy season from December to March is advised. For fewer crowds, consider visiting in the spring or the autumn.
Mendoza: Wine buffs will enjoy Mendoza at any time of the year, but the autumn months from March to May are particularly special as this is the grape harvest season.
