Top 8 Unique & Boutique Hotels of South USA

As we touched down in San Francisco for the start of our two week long California road trip with the kids, I was desperately hoping that at 8 and 5 years old, they would get the same level of enjoyment from this kind of trip as we had before they came along.&nbsp;
We gambled on San Francisco being the best place to start, building up to the theme parks in LA rather than piquing from the outset (or so we thought). Surely an open top bus over the Golden Gate would prove to be the highlight? Or perhaps the seals at Pier 39? Maybe even the harbour cruise around the bay and Alcatraz? An outsider was the year-round Christmas shop, which given my kids enthusiasm for Christmas, was in with a chance. Turns out none of these proved to be the highlight for any of us, despite them all being great in their own right.
&nbsp;

To understand what did make our No. 1 and why, I have to take you back to 1993 when a film called Demolition Man was released, set in a fictional city in the year 2032. This futuristic film gave us a glimpse of what Hollywood thought things would look like 39 years into the future &ndash; or as things currently stand, 8 years from now. Typically Hollywood got carried away, however on our first morning in San Francisco, my mind was immediately cast back to this film when I saw a car drive past with no-one at the wheel. The future as predicted in 1993, appeared to have arrived. Enter Waymo.
A quick chat with the hotel concierge and I learned that Waymo is San Francisco&rsquo;s latest and undeniably most exciting tech offering, which has only been available to the public for a month or so &ndash; essentially driverless Ubers.
&nbsp;

The app told me exactly when and where the car would be waiting. It also told me that my initials would be shown on the spinning electronic carousel on top of the car so I could easily identify it as mine. Car duly identified, I was able to unlock it through the app. We all piled in, me in the front seat, family in the back, no-one in the driving seat.
Touchscreens in the front and back welcomed us and told us to buckle up, confirm our destination, and press the button to begin trip, which we did, prompting the car to inch into traffic, the steering wheel moving without the aid of a human as I looked on mildly uncomfortably, gripping the handle a little firmer than usual.&nbsp;
Incredibly, that feeling soon passed as I became more comfortable as a passenger in my driverless car &ndash; more comfortable in fact than I am with real people at the wheel. The level of intelligence and driving capability displayed as we progressed through the middle of a hilly and very busy city was staggering. Not once did it do anything questionable or concerning, even successfully turning right on red lights (as you can in the US) and yielding comfortably to pedestrians. What was even more surprising was how normal it quickly felt, and how locals had confidently taken to having them on their streets &ndash; not one pedestrian flinched or turned back!
&nbsp;

The icing on the cake however, was its ability to navigate across a few lanes of traffic and into the entrance of our hotel, manoeuvre around parked cars, and drop us off right by the entrance door to our hotel. And then drive away on its own, which somehow felt even more odd. Where was it going?
So there it was &ndash; the future. The best unexpected experience we were to have in San Francisco, all for $15. If you are going to San Franscisco anytime soon, I implore you to jump in and take a ride before it becomes the norm &ndash; you&rsquo;ll have Waymo fun that you ever thought possible.&nbsp;
&nbsp;

As for the rest of the trip, well the issue became how we could top that unexpected experience and to manage the kids&rsquo; expectations about our hire car being driverless for the entire trip.&nbsp;
Thankfully, the majesty of Yosemite National Park, the rugged beauty of the coast, the laid-back surf culture as we progressed towards LA, the familiarity of Hollywood (from TV shows and movies apparently&hellip;) and the excitement of the theme parks all added to the high bar set so early on in San Fransisco. However, none felt quite as surreal and futuristic.
My guess is that by 2032, Waymo will have developed flying cars and rebranded to Flymo&hellip; (sorry).

It would be remiss not to mention the devastating wildfires that struck the historic town of Lahaina on 8th August 2023, and a key reason behind my visit was to see for myself how the destination is recovering from such a tragedy. While these fires destroyed much of Lahaina itself, which remains closed to the public, I cannot emphasise enough that Lahaina is a small town and the rest of Maui is open! If you are staying in a hotel on the northwest coast, you will drive past Lahaina&rsquo;s poignant highway memorial to those lost in the fire, which will rightfully give you pause for reflection. However once in Ka&rsquo;anapali, Napili or Kapalua, you&rsquo;ll be blown away by the most genuinely warm greeting, whether staying in the most refined hotel or the simplest self-catering resort. It&rsquo;s very much business as usual; every person I spoke to was thrilled to hear I was visiting, offered a wealth of local recommendations and asked me to spread the word that tourists are welcome!&nbsp;
While it will be many years before Lahaina is rebuilt, there&rsquo;s certainly no shortage of attractions in West Maui. Pay a visit to scenic lavender farms and sunflower fields, see artisan chocolate being made at Maui Ku&rsquo;ia Estate, shop for hand-made crafts in the arty surf town of Pa&rsquo;ia, or perhaps conquer a hiking trail in the West Maui Mountains for panoramic views over the Hawaiian archipelago. And that&rsquo;s without even considering the multitude of readily available watersports, beach activities and local tours to other parts of the island!
&nbsp;

Having been lucky enough to visit the Seychelles, Sri Lanka and the Maldives in the last year, I can wholeheartedly say that Ka&rsquo;anapali Beach is up there with best, boasting some of the softest sand and most stunning, scarlet sunsets I&rsquo;ve seen - yet this world-class beach is remarkably quiet as people wonder whether it&rsquo;s appropriate to visit. Other areas of Maui, like Pa&rsquo;ia, Hana and Wailea, were completely unaffected by fires yet are still feeling the knock-on effect of visitor numbers being fewer than usual. In this sense, there is no better time to visit as you&rsquo;ll enjoy quieter resorts (with lower prices) and tranquil beaches, whilst providing a much-needed boost to Maui&rsquo;s economy by supporting local businesses.
Aside from current circumstances, what really sets Maui apart as a destination, along with its neighbouring islands, is the incomparable Hawaiian spirit and expression of Aloha (peace, compassion, and responsibility to future generations). The Hawaiian Islands go above and beyond to protect their heritage and sharing art and tradition with visitors is a hallmark of Hawaiian hospitality, so most hotels offer a range of authentic cultural activities to enrich your stay. Why not try your hand at lei making with local tropical flowers, traditional weaving, storytelling, hula dancing, ukulele lessons, or join a vibrant Lu&rsquo;au celebration (a Hawaiian feast with lively music and a showcase of native cuisine). These truly unique experiences, more than any poolside Mai Tai, are what will make you forget the jetlag and remember your time on Maui for years to come.

Regardless of where you choose to base yourself on Maui, I highly recommend booking a day tour down the iconic Hana Highway, also referred to as the Road to Hana. Whilst confident drivers can absolutely choose to drive themselves (especially if wanting to stay in Hana overnight), it should be noted that this road has approximately 620 curves, earning itself the alternative nickname of &lsquo;The Divorce Road&rsquo; from the stress this can cause to unprepared tourists! Opting to traverse the Road to Hana as a tour means you can sit back and enjoy the view, safe in the hands of an experienced driver while listening to the fascinating commentary of an expert local guide.&nbsp;
And what a view it is. This winding road snakes through lush, green foliage &ndash; very much akin to Jurassic Park, although this was primarily filmed on neighbouring Kau&rsquo;ai. Emerald green is punctuated by orange splashes of huge African tulips (aptly known as Flames of the Forest) and ruby blooms of poinsettia. The flowers of mountain apple trees glow a luminous fuchsia, while all pale in comparison to the spectacular rainbow eucalyptus trees, where peeling bark forms multi-coloured stripes along the trunk. The Road to Hana is famed for its myriad waterfalls and your guide will know the best to swim in, as well as all the best angles to capture the region&rsquo;s striking black sand beaches and lava tubes. Tours are a full day undertaking at approximately 13 hours there and back, but worth every minute, and transfers are available from either west or south coast resorts.

If you visit Maui between mid-December and April, you&rsquo;ll likely spot humpback whales frolicking and spouting right off the coast! More than 10,000 whales migrate from Alaska to Maui every year (essentially on holiday to the warmer waters!) and calves come to the surface to breathe every 3-5 minutes, so it really is quite common to see them this time of year. For the very best chance of sightings, time your trip between mid-January and March when the waters of Maui house the world&rsquo;s densest whale population.

Spotlight on California

The first thing one notices when one steps off the plane in <a href="../../holidays/usa/eastern-usa/new-york" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York</a> at Christmas time is the cold. December may traditionally bring gloomy wet weather to us at home but in New York there is no Gulf Stream keeping things relatively mild. Instead, the cooler Labrador Current hugs the eastern seaboard all the way down from the Arctic bringing cold far more Christmasy weather. It's not unheard of to see snow, although January through March are in fact your best bet if you want the best chance of seeing the city cloaked in white.

As with at any other time of the year, the New York <a href="../../tours/usa/eastern-usa/new-york-and-new-york-state/tour-new-york-citypass">CityPass</a> is essential for touring in Manhattan. However, the three most iconic things to do in midtown at Christmas time are free and do not require any passes:
Take a stroll or a horse and cart through Central Park. With its frozen lakes and fields of white, Central Park in winter is magical. Views of the snowy city are plentiful, as are the ducks sliding on the ice and vendors selling roasted chestnuts.
Go to the busltling ice rink at the Rockefeller Centre. With its majestic Christmas tree and hordes of tourists and locals alike slipping and sliding in ever-decreasing circles, this is a great spot for selfies with Santa hats and to people watch. Try some Eggnog and get into the festive spirit. If you do fancy strapping on your skates, we can help you with tickets before you go to avoid disapointment.
Visit Macy&rsquo;s on 5th Avenue. Even if you don't enjoy shopping to witness the masses panic-buyingas if the end of days were upon us is truly an experience to remember. Then journey from the profane to the sacred and take a brisk walk over to St. Patrick&rsquo;s Catherdral, where the other meaning of Christmas is altogether more peaceful.
Of course, no stay in Midtown is complete without a trip to Broadway to warm the heart as well as all the other body parts. If hilarity, wit and a touch of the sacriligious are your bag, then look no further than the all-singing, all-dancing Book of Mormon. For irreverent puppetry, Avenue Q&nbsp;hits the mark with an offering half Sesame Street, half South Park. And if you fancy a spectacular show that turns the Wizard of Oz on its head and literally defies gravity, then Wicked&nbsp;cannot be missed.&nbsp; Next time, Hamilton&nbsp;is on my radar. For when it comes to New York and Broadway, there is always a follow-up act.
Midtown Manhattan offer no shortage of eateries, from street vendors up to the finest dining. A carnivore&rsquo;s delight is on offer at Churrascaria Plataforma on 316 W 49th St, New York. This is BBQ dining Brazilian-style, where the tender meat just keeps coming and coming. Just make sure you don&rsquo;t have to waddle very far after your sitting!
And if you're homesick and having withdrawal symptoms from missing all the footie over the festive period, then drop into the Football Factory at Legends on 6 West 33rd Street, where the sports-mad New Yorkers go to catch English Premier League matches. On match days, it has a lively atmosphere with a wide array of beers to heighten your joy or disappointment, depending on how your team does.

A journey through Downtown Manhattan is a journey through the history of New York. And that is exactly what is on offer on the <a href="../../tours/usa/eastern-usa/new-york-and-new-york-state/tour-tenements-tastings-and-tales-walking-tour">Tenements, Tastes and Tales</a>&nbsp;half-day tour. We got to taste Dutch waffles, Chinese dumplings, Italian mozzarella and Parma ham, Jewish knishes and German pretzels and pilsners. The food was great and most welcome given the seasonal weather, but the real joy was getting to grips with the history and neighbourhoods of what was once New Amsterdam. Little Italy, Chinatown, the Lower East Side, even what once was the Five Points features in the Martin Scorsese period-movie, The Gangs of New York&nbsp;are literally within a stone&rsquo;s throw of each other.
You can use your New York CityPass to visit the 9/11 Memorial Centre, which is as tastefully respectful as it is sobering. You can easily wile away several hours there and then amble down to the gentrified Battery Park for spectacular views across to the Manhattan Bridge and Staten Island. This is also the launch point for tours out to the Statue of Liberty and to the Ellis Island Immigration Museum.
There, on a self-guided tour with headphones, one can learn about the history and marvel at the photographs and testimonies of the millions of huddled and hungry Irish, Germans, Italians, Swedes, Poles, Jews, Arabs and Africans that poured through its doors for over half a century. You can also examine the records to see if any of your ancestors were housed here pending acceptance into the New World.

Here both our palette and curiosity are sated through&nbsp;the Brownstone Brooklyn Food Tour. This is an interesting way to pass a few hours with a small group looking to see something outside of Manhattan. Brooklyn is the up-and-coming borough of New York, one of the city&rsquo;s five (the others being Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens and Staten Island).
Sample breads, cheeses, pastries and more to nibble at the rich palette that is the New York food scene, and you can do it all with a local by your side to give you the lowdown on why this city is just so tasty. This tour is a celebration of the small, independent patisseries, bakeries and diners on offer in this artisan suburb. French, Spanish, Yiddish and good ol&rsquo; American culinary influences can be sampled, and I found our guide very informative. It is nice to see another side of the Big Apple that is not all Bright Lights, Big City.
For sports junkies, the Black Horse Pub on 568 5th Avenue, Brooklyn is a must, with English soccer and American football the staples during the winter. Fantasy football enthusiasts might know this as the watering hole of Josh &amp; Brandon, two affable Michigan natives who present the &ldquo;Always Cheating&rdquo; Fantasy Premier League podcast.
A walk through the affluent avenues of Brooklyn Heights towards Manhattan brings one to the suburb of Dumbo, home to the River Caf&eacute;, scene of one of my most memorable (and definitely the most expensive) meals of my life. The riverside gourmet restaurant, situated under the Brooklyn Bridge, offers a stunning vista of the glistening New York skyline. From the moment you leave the chilly December winds at the entrance, you are made feel welcome. Jackets are provided for gentlemen who neglected to pack one, and one is literally fawned up from the greeters to the Ma&icirc;tre D, and from the sommelier to the attentive waiting staff. The dishes, both savoury and sweet are presented to perfection, and the wine is of the highest quality. If you are looking for something a bit special to make up for not having Christmas dinner at home, a visit to the River Caf&eacute; is highly recommended.
Getting out to and back from Brooklyn is easy with a week-long Subway pass. The underground and overground trains connect the five boroughs and, unusually for New York City, provide very good value. Travelling&nbsp;around Manhattan can seem a bit bewildering at first, but mastering the knack of navigating the subway (which is a lot warmer than the freezing temperatures above ground) makes your stay in the Big Apple feel all the more genuine for getting the experience of mingling with the locals as they go about their day-to-day lives.

Continuing further north, you can cross the small bridge at Blind Pass to get to the hidden treasure that is Captiva. This intimate Island paradise offers secluded beaches and gastronomic delights certain to satisfy any taste. From here you can also get a boat out to see the local dolphins and hopefully even spot a grazing manatee. On a very clear night you may even get a glimpse of the natural phenomenon known as the &lsquo;Green Flash&rsquo; whilst the sunsets, truly making for a magical end to any day.

For the nature lovers and enthusiasts amongst you, leave the city behind and you will be hugely rewarded. The Everglades National Park is the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States and the habitat of a multitude of rare and endangered species, most famously the manatee, American crocodile and the elusive panther. Take to one of the many famed airboats and weave through the Everglades in your pursuit of these incredible animals.

Ultimate Rhythms of the South

Located in Southern California, <a href="../../holidays/usa/california/san-diego" target="_blank" rel="noopener">San Diego</a> is blessed with year-round sunshine. An ideal start or finish to any west coast fly drive, we combined it easily with a fantastic motorhome holiday taking in the sights around the impressive national parks located in nearby Arizona &amp; Utah.
&nbsp;

San Diego has a wonderfully relaxed feel and really is a must for any road trip in California. Pairing gorgeous beaches with a vibrant, bustling city, it&rsquo;s no wonder people wish to spend longer here.
A notable mention is the city&rsquo;s amazing food scene. With incredible fresh fish and Mexican influenced dishes, the best place to sample these wonders is in the famous Gaslamp Quarter. This is the beating heart of San Diego, a gem with attractive Victorian architecture blended with contemporary structures and home to the best of the city&rsquo;s nightlife and entertainment scene. It's also the perfect place for sipping a margarita or two! Stay in the Gaslamp Quarter to be in the heart of the action.

Alternatively, families may prefer to stay at the beautiful Coronado Island or the aquatic haven of Mission Bay and its surrounding beaches. Mission Bay is a must-see when visiting San Diego and was a particular highlight for us, having spent the morning on the beach visiting the traditional Belmont Amusement Park. With 27 miles of bike paths and meandering shoreline, Mission Bay is also ripe for exploration whether it&rsquo;s hitting the water by kayak, hiring a bike or just enjoying a picnic on the sand.
&nbsp;

With so much to see and do, San Diego is a destination for everyone. It makes a great entry point for southern California and in addition to having multiple flight options from the UK &amp; Ireland, the fact that it's a small airport which is located conveniently close to the city, means you'll be at your hotel in no time at all!

Whale watching, walking the coastline, shopping, the sensational food scene, San Diego is the city that keeps giving. To take all this in however, my top tip would be to use Uber instead of taxis, it&rsquo;s much cheaper and easier than driving yourself around the city.

For that much needed winter sun,&nbsp;<a href="../../holidays/usa/hawaii" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hawaii</a>&nbsp;is an ideal destination to visit between January and March, as its position near the equator means the islands offer year-round sunshine. Although rainfall can be slightly higher in the winter months, the rain showers are short and infrequent so are extremely unlikely to disturb that treasured beach time. It's worth knowing though that the swell and height of the waves makes Hawaii's winter (November to March) perfect for surfers but not really suitable for swimmers and children, so it's best to stick to the pool during these months.

Cherry Blossom Festival - With the abundance of Sushi and Udon dishes, it doesn't take long to discover the Japanese influence in Hawaii. The festival, which originates in Kyoto, involves the demonstration of music, dance and arts from Japan.
Ka Molokai'i Makahiki Festival - Molokai'i is one of Hawaii's lesser known islands but with less visitiors the island has an aura of authenticism. The week long celebration on the island features Hawaiian fishing contests, games, sports, music and dancing!

Kona Brewer's Festival - As a fan of an ale, I have had the joy of tasting Kona's IPA - a delight in the sun. Inkeeping with the name, the festival is held on the Big Island and provides the opportunity for you to taste sixty types of beer from thirty breweries. You can wash down cuisine from twenty-five restauraunts at the King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel. If that wasn't enough, the festival features live music, contests, a "Trash Fashion Show" and fire dancers!
Prince Kuhio Festival - The festival that honors the cherished Prince Kuhio - the first Hawaiian delegate in the US congress and the person responsible for uniting the islands - features canoe races, music, dance and a royal ball on Kauai - the home of Kuhio.

As we move from the Hawaiian winter (Kau) to summer (Ho'olio), the daylight hours become longer and what rainfall there was dimminshes even further. Ocean swells are much lower so this is a perfect time to visit Hawaii for snorkelling in Molokini or sunbathing in Waikiki. The drier months are also great for hiking such as The Diamond Head Hike, where you can hide in WW2 bunkers and find panoramic views across the island of&nbsp;<a href="../../holidays/usa/hawaii/oahu">Oahu</a>. These months are a great time to visit Hawaii.

The Best Time to Visit Hawaii

With steep hills, a beautiful bay and charming cable cars, San Francisco is an enchanting city ready to be uncovered. Highway 1 is the gateway to an abundance of beaches along the <a href="../../holidays/usa/california/california-coast" target="_blank" rel="noopener">California coastline</a>, stretching from San Francisco to Los Angeles.
