We spent a night in Chile before transferring the following morning to a private area of Santiago airport which is exclusively for Silversea guests, before boarding our four hour Antarctica Airlines flight down to Puerto Williams. With everyone excited for the next 10 nights, we boarded the beautiful Silver Endeavor and headed to our Premium Balcony Suites ready for the adventure ahead.&nbsp;
The journey started with the much anticipated Drake Passage crossing. We were incredibly fortunate and according to the staff on board it was the smoothest sailing they had encountered all season and had a day and a half to enjoy all that the ship had to offer including an assortment of games, lectures on the marine life in Antarctica and a lovely library with endless books.
&nbsp;

The dreamy Drake Passage crossing meant we were able to arrive into Antarctica earlier than planned so we had an extra landing in Yankee Harbour. This was our first encounter with wild gentoo penguins, and fur and elephant seals playing on the shore.&nbsp;
The next day we arrived in Danco Island where we did a hike surrounded by penguins which gave us incredible views over the surrounding scenery, followed by an afternoon zodiac cruise to Whilemina Bay. Otherwise known as &lsquo;Whale-mina Bay&rsquo;, this was a solid favourite of the group; we were up close to the majestic humpback whales as they were feeding right in front of us.
&nbsp;

The following day we visited Pietermann Island and Plenneau Bay (otherwise known as Iceberg Graveyard) which was another solid favourite amongst the group. Here we kayaked around icebergs, we saw ice calving from the glaciers and an abundance of marine life. Humpback whales, fur seals and leopard seals were everywhere we looked; it was truly an incredible day.&nbsp;
After a busy day exploring, we were all very excited to get into the Antarctic waters for the &lsquo;polar plunge&rsquo;, an exhilarating experience that none of us would soon forget! That evening we sailed through the magical Lemair Channel whilst sipping champagne and eating canapes.
&nbsp;

The next morning, we arrived in a gorgeous little bay called Paradise Bay where we saw minke and humpback whales along with even more stunning glaciers. The afternoon took us to our very first landing on mainland Antarctica. Neko Harbour was our first step onto the continent and arriving here certainly felt like an incredible achievement.&nbsp;
After our fun filled week exploring, we had our last stop in Telefon Bay and Whalers Bay on Deception Island. This was an active volcano in the South Shetlands which gave us amazing views of volcanic slopes, steaming beaches and ash layered glaciers &ndash; and provided a much-needed walk after all the calories consumed on the cruise!&nbsp; It was then time to start making our way back. The journey back took us past the incredible Elephant Island, where Shackleton&rsquo;s men were rescued after four months and is rarely visited by cruises.
&nbsp;

Overall, this was a truly wonderful experience which we are all sad to see end. The wonder of this journey is hard to truly put into words; you simply have to experience it yourself.

Cruising in Antarctica with Silversea Expeditions

Another thunderous clap whips through our tent like a gunshot. Then, as suddenly as the sound erupted, we&rsquo;re pulled back into the almost eery silence that preceded it. The glacier behind us has carved into the icy waters which lay just metres beyond where we&rsquo;re attempting - if somewhat half-heartedly - to sleep. As the wonder subsides our breathing joins the subtle shifts and movements of our surroundings; the gentle plosive blows of whales coming up for air, the trilling whistle of sea birds, and the distant crackle of ice pushing and receding.
We&rsquo;ve been on this small island off the coast of mainland Antarctica since yesterday evening, and since then, despite the cold and sleep&rsquo;s stubborn evasion, I can sense a feeling of calm and awe settle amongst my fellow campers. We erected our tents like a row of red beacons in the snow and watched as our ship sailed away, leaving us to the ice, the stars and the only-occasionally-interrupted silence.
&nbsp;

At 5:30am the ship, as promised, returns to our camping spot. We take down our tents and wander giddily to the zodiacs that hail our return to the expedition&hellip; and cabins with underfloor heating. It&rsquo;s a stark contrast to be in this raw magical place with so many modern luxuries at hand; only yesterday I sat sipping pinot gris as I watched a pod of humpbacks beyond panoramic windows. Tomorrow we&rsquo;ll spot an albatross circling the ship from the hot tub. It&rsquo;s all quite surreal.
&nbsp;

But then that&rsquo;s what&rsquo;s totally captivated me - this place that&rsquo;s like nowhere I&rsquo;ve ever explored. Waking up each day to mountains sitting above an iceberg-speckled sea is an experience beyond compare; kayaking next to penguins that seem to hop across the water like aquatic bunnies is a sight that I won&rsquo;t readily forget. Each day has brought us a myriad icy treasures that my camera has yet to accurately capture.
&nbsp;

We&rsquo;d set sail from Ushuaia and spent three days crossing the Drake Passage. Despite some green faces we were assured that we&rsquo;d been lucky and had been graced with the &lsquo;Drake Lake&rsquo;, instead of the infamous &lsquo;Drake Shake&rsquo;. In honesty it was relatively tame and nothing that some over-the-counter anti-nausea couldn&rsquo;t tackle (I&rsquo;m not proud to say that I&rsquo;ve had more offensive hangovers). Days at sea were filled with lectures, marine life sightings, and more seabirds than my harassed companions cared to acknowledge; although I suppose we can&rsquo;t all be self-proclaimed twitchers&hellip;
&nbsp;

When we arrived in the White Continent we drank up the jovial atmosphere; snap-happy fingers twitched above camera shutters and fumbled for impossibly-sized zoom lenses. Passengers ran from deck to deck, exchanging congratulations on wildlife sightings, or radiating thinly-veiled smugness for their perfect whale-fluke shot. As the days passed we hiked, paddled, at one point even swam in the vast pristine wilderness of Antarctica. Donning expedition gear and binoculars we observed disgruntled penguin chicks waiting to shed their awkward patchy downs; we spotted leopard seals slinking from icebergs into the black briny depths of the ocean; we were even met with fin waves and boisterous breaches from the resident whales. Morning shore excursions saw boots crunching on virgin snow and gave way to afternoons weaving through seal-peppered icebergs on small zodiac boats.
&nbsp;

Back on the ship we learnt about Antarctica&rsquo;s fascinating past. Some of my favourite times were spent poring over the photographs from Shackleton&rsquo;s expedition aboard the famous Endurance. It seemed impossible to be traversing (however more luxuriously) the same realms of those explorers. Wildlife became larger-than-life in the daily lectures that brought out the Attenborough in everyone. I&rsquo;m still surprised that I was so enthralled by the chemical make up of ice - I guess sometimes you just have to be there.&nbsp;
Meals were spent in a constant state of flux between digestion and wildlife hunting. Just when you thought you could enjoy your creme br&ucirc;l&eacute;e there&rsquo;d invariably be a chorus of &lsquo;Humpback whale! Starboard side!&rsquo;, and the subsequent shuffle of diners would see your dessert spoon hastily discarded.
&nbsp;

On the average cruise you spend three nights sailing to Antarctica, five nights there, and a further two nights travelling home. Each of the five mornings that we woke up in that wintery wilderness felt like waking up to another white Christmas. Greedily we&rsquo;d throw our expedition parkas over our pyjamas, hurtle onto our balcony and wonder what shiny new presents the day would bring.

Awe inspiring Antarctica

The seventh continent is unsurprisingly a bucket list trip for many travellers, but it's hard to fully comprehend what you're really signing up for, especially when it can often be spoken about as more of a tick box than an experience. It is an achievement to have visited, for sure - I can now say I've been to all seven continents, walked&nbsp;amongst colonies of penguins that live exclusively in the southernmost reaches of the world and I was even one of the first people to ever lay eyes on the largest iceberg&nbsp;currently in existence! But none of this really encompasses what it actually feels like to be there. These achievements are about me, not about <a href="../../cruise/destinations/antarctica">Antarctica</a>, and that's&nbsp;looking at it completely backwards; it's not me that's impressive for having been, it's Antarctica itself which is impressive - more so than any other place I've ever been.
&nbsp;

I read somewhere a phrase that sums this up quite well: Antarctica is indifferent to humanity. Personal achievements, flaws or interests don't belong in a place so&nbsp;entirely governed by nature. It's not a hostile environment; penguins are perfectly happy to waddle by without fear or agression towards any shivering onlookers,&nbsp;provided you don't stand in their highways. It's just that humans are entirely irrelevant to the sheer majesty of the Antarctic world. Nature is in complete control, and we are reduced to insignificance. On a planet that we have colonised almost to the point of destruction, this is extremely humbling, eye-opening, soul-altering. Nowhere is this realisation more profound than when witnessing A68, an iceberg twice the size of Luxembourg at 5,800 square kilometers. Stretching from horizon to horizon and&nbsp;towering 60 meters above our ship, the sight was almost incomprehensible to the human eye, certainly uncapturable by cameras, and impossible to describe. We were but a speck of red floating beside an entire world in its own right, immovable, impassable, affecting the very gravity of the region, disrupting the system of water currents around the entire continent purely by its existence, a physical embodiment of the power of the place.&nbsp;
&nbsp;

From the largest to the smallest, icebergs define the landscape, which is no surprise since Antarctica contains 90% of the world's ice. It is said that it's impossible to&nbsp;take a bad picture in Antarctica, as everywhere you look are spectacular formations, ranging from the purest white to the deepest blue, many with a collection of pengiuns&nbsp;adorning the top. Gentoos are the most commonly seen, but chinstraps and adelies abound too. With a bit of luck, a majestic emperor may even be spotted. Weddell, crabeater&nbsp;and elephant seals can be found lounging around, while the predatory leopard seal usually remains in the water, always ready for the chase. Further from the land the&nbsp;whales take control; orcas rule the food chain, gentle humpbacks breach the surface putting on a show, while minkes shy away from boats but their blows are often visible.&nbsp;
&nbsp;

All creatures, even down to the tiniest microorganisms, play an important and valued role in the ecosystem. In between sightings on deck, the expedition team run lectures&nbsp;about all aspects of the Antarctic region, from geology to history to biology, covering all animal species and even plants (spoiler: there are two plant species on the&nbsp;entirety of the continent!). The staff are incredibly experienced, knowledgeable and skilled; not only are each of them experts in their own field, they are also captivating&nbsp;story-tellers with unique personal perspectives and limitless passion for what they do. Their ethos is based on a quote from Baba Dioum:
"In the end we will conserve only what we love; we will love only what we understand; and we will understand only what we are taught."&nbsp;
An Antarctic expedition is full of lessons in every sense; this truly does lead to love, and travellers quickly find themselves ambassadors for the region and its&nbsp;proctection. And ambassadors are needed - Antarctica may be indifferent to us, but it is not immune. While there are limitations in place for the number of tourists on land at any point, demand is growing, and it is therefore imperative that travel is undertaken in the right way. Travel to Hiroshima on the world famous Shinkansen bullet train, which can reach speeds of up to 300km/hr! En route make a brief stop at Himeji, home to one of the most magnificent castles in Japan, and one of the few that has maintained its original structure since the early 17th Century.

First stop today should be the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in central Hiroshima which is dedicated to those who lost their lives in the 1945 bombing. Stroll through the park and discover the many moving memorials, monuments and statues before heading into the museum itself.&nbsp;
Later, take the short ferry ride to Miyajima Island. Famous for its floating torii gate, given this name due to the appearance of it floating during high tide. The shrine itself dates back to the 6th Century and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This afternoon learn about Japanese culture at a tea ceremony in a &lsquo;Machiya&rsquo; - a beautifully restored wooden townhouse. In the evening why not visit the Fushimi Inari Shrine just as the sun starts to set. Famous for its thousands of red torii gates, and the Kiyomizu-dera Temple, it offers stunning views of the city.

Today explore the former imperial capital with a knowledgeable local guide, utilising Kyoto&rsquo;s comprehensive bus system to visit some of the city&rsquo;s historic monuments. Start the day with a visit to the ornamental Nijo Castle and its stunning surrounding gardens, built as the residence of the military government that once ruled Japan. Continue on to Kinkakuji, the Golden Pavilion. Originally built as a retirement villa for the Shogun, after his death it became a Buddhist Temple at his request, and is now one of Kyoto&rsquo;s most famous temples. The final stop of the morning is Ryoan-ji Zen, the site of Japan&rsquo;s most famous rock garden.&nbsp;
At a convenient breaking point, your guide will select a restaurant for lunch - usually at a popular venue that has some local flavour. If there is a specific type of food/cuisine that you fancy, do share this with your guide and they will try their best to take you to a suitable restaurant.
After lunch, visit Kiyomizu Temple which affords impressive views over the city.

Most of the sights are located around popular Nara Park, known locally as &lsquo;Deer Park&rsquo; due to the large population of tame deer living there. Other attractions include Todai-ji Temple, the world&rsquo;s largest wooden building and Kasuga-taisha, Nara&rsquo;s most celebrated Shinto shrine. The afternoon will be free for you to explore before returning to Kyoto.

Travel to Osaka, the third largest city in Japan and known for its food and nightlife. Visit the Osaka Castle, one of Japan's most famous landmarks, and the Dotonbori district, which is full of restaurants and shops. Given Osaka&rsquo;s motto is &lsquo;eat till you drop&rsquo;, there is no better place to experience the flamboyant and colourful world of Japan&rsquo;s street food and nightlife scene than on a food tour.
