Spotlight on... The Great Southern Touring Route, Australia

Situated in the northeast of Australia, Cairns acts as the gateway to this tropical region. International airlines such as Qantas, Cathay Pacific (seasonal) and Singapore airlines offer regular flights into Cairns, with more airlines soon to follow. When?
In terms of seasonality, the Australian winter (May-September) is the best time if time to visit if you&rsquo;re looking for the driest weather and comfortable temperatures; a typical winter&rsquo;s day would see temperatures in the mid 20s.

Where do I start? The Great Barrier Reef is on many people&rsquo;s bucket list and trips out to the reef run daily from Port Douglas and Cairns, allowing visitors to snorkel or try their first dive in the world&rsquo;s largest coral reef. Rich wildlife is the main highlight here, from an abundance of crocodiles and the chance to spot a cassowary and tree kangaroos if you&rsquo;re lucky!

Port Douglas stole my heart. It&rsquo;s a perfect beach town with excellent dining, day trips, four miles of golden sand and an array of hotels and apartments available. The <a href="../../hotels/australia/the-great-barrier-reef-and-queensland/port-douglas/peninsula-boutique-hotel" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Peninsula Boutique hotel</a> is a real standout, situated just seconds from the beach and a short stroll into the town centre. It really felt like a home away from home and is the perfect place to chill out in the evenings after exhilarating reef days; the views over Four Mile Beach are unmatched from their ocean facing rooms!
&nbsp;

Allow at least five days in Tropical North Queensland if possible. Get your reef day and other day tours booked in early to avoid disappointment, but do allow yourself some free time to explore the town and beach. If you can only spare a few days in this region, you might consider staying in Cairns, particularly if you&rsquo;re going to be busy on day trips throughout your time here. Although Cairns doesn&rsquo;t have a beach, the marina is very pleasant and there are plenty of local attractions, such as <a href="../../tours/australia/queensland/cairns-port-douglas-and-the-great-barrier-reef/tour-kuranda-scenic-rail-and-skyrail" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kuranda</a>.

Just Back From... Tropical North Queensland

A hidden gem, just a stone&rsquo;s throw away from Melbourne, of the south coast of Australia. Here lies the often overlooked, yet seriously stunning island state of Tasmania. Tasmania is separated from mainland Australia by the Bass Strait. Tasmania is a perfect all-year destination. We visited in winter (May to August) when temperatures can reach as low as minus degrees in mountainous areas. However, these are generally cooler months. This makes it perfect to enjoy a hot coco while gazing up at the Milky Way (which we were lucky enough to experience)!
Summer season runs from December to February, where temperatures can average around the low twenties, making this time of year perfect for eating scallops on&nbsp; pristine white beaches.&nbsp;
We combined our trip to Tasmania with a pre night in Melbourne, making a direct flight into Launceston super quick and easy. We flew out of the bustling city of Hobart which has direct links to Perth, Sydney and many more. A perfect opportunity for exploring onwards after your time here.
&nbsp;

Over 40% of Tasmania is protected as UNESCO World Heritage Area and national park, making it a nature-lovers paradise. From stunning lakes, mountains, an abundance of wildlife and beautiful coastal scenery these are only a few of the reasons to visit this spectacular island.&nbsp;
I would recommend this destination to all types of travellers; those seeking adventure, or those looking to simply marvel at the outstanding natural beauty.&nbsp;
We had a fantastic experience in Tasmania, from start to finish. Our guides Josh and Sean from Tourism Tasmania were excellent, their knowledge was second to none! Having both local guides made this trip a unique experience for us.

Tasmania definitely stands out to me as a go-to destination. We were so lucky to experience some of the main highlights including Cradle Mountain on one of the most beautiful days, while also trekking the circuit around Dove Lake. There are multiple hiking and trekking routes for all physical abilities here. A huge highlight was the abundance of wildlife including Tasmanian Devils (those of which are native to the island), along with wombats, wallabies and we were even lucky enough to spot a platypus at the <a href="../../hotels/australia/tasmania/tasmania/peppers-cradle-mountain-lodge" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Peppers Cradle Mountain Lodge</a>!&nbsp;
We delved deep into the rainforest on the <a href="../../tours/australia/tasmania/tour-gordon-river-wilderness-cruise" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gordon River Wilderness Cruise</a>, visiting Sarah Island to learn about the convict history here and went back in time on the <a href="../../tours/australia/tasmania/tour-teepookana-and-the-king" target="_blank" rel="noopener">West Coast Wilderness Railway</a> journey from Strahan. Strahan being a beautiful coastal, quaint town where we stayed in the <a href="../../hotels/australia/tasmania/tasmania/risby-cove-strahan" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Risby Cove Hotel</a>, possibly the best seafood ever! We went truffle hunting on a local farm, and took part in visiting local vineyards. Hobart and Launceston are both fantastic cities to explore the rich culture of Tasmanian history as well as a wide range of restaurants to savour some of the most incredible authentic local cuisine.
My personal highlight had to be seeing Cradle Mountain reflecting onto Dove Lake, it was breathtaking!

First of all&hellip; DO IT! Second of all, give yourself enough time to immerse yourself in the experience of being in Tasmania. Don&rsquo;t rush this trip; pick up a car to travel around and take your time on the journey. Tasmania is a lot larger than what you may think, so leave some extra time for your trip to make the most of each area!

An Insider's Guide to Tasmania, Australia

There were three areas I was most excited to discover in Victoria: Melbourne, the Great Ocean Road, and the Grampians.&nbsp;
Visiting Victoria in their winter season, whilst very chilly, meant that we were able to visit sites such as the Twelve Apostles and Loch Ard unhindered by crowds of tourists. It was too cold to enjoy an ocean swim, but the magnificently moody coastlines were just as beautiful and awe-inspiring in the winter as I imagine they would be in warmer weather.&nbsp;
Up in the Grampians, the cooler weather lent itself to some great hikes followed by an evening enjoying a soak in the outdoor bath at <a href="../../hotels/australia/victoria/beyond-melbourne/dulc-cabins-halls-gap" target="_blank" rel="noopener">DULC cabins</a> - there&rsquo;s nothing quite like having an inquisitive wallaby or two hop by to investigate whilst you&rsquo;re stargazing from the tub!
&nbsp;

Melbourne is a vibrant city - from the colourful bathing boxes on Brighton Beach and the street-art adorning Hosier Lane, to the heady heights of the Skydeck from where the city&rsquo;s skyline can be best appreciated, there is always something else to discover.&nbsp;
If you&rsquo;re looking for beautiful beaches and coastlines stretching out as far as the eye can see, the Great Ocean Road is surely one of the best road-trips you can embark on. Enjoy pitstops at Bell&rsquo;s Beach (famous among surfers), Airey&rsquo;s Inlet to check out the lighthouse, and the small but picturesque town of Lorne. Spend a surprisingly spirited weekend in Apollo Bay, where the locals gather to enjoy live music at the Apollo Bay Hotel. Then head to Port Campbell to take in the infamous Twelve Apostles.&nbsp;
Finally, if you&rsquo;re looking to immerse yourself in some true beauty, head up into the Grampians to spot emus, wallabies and koalas in their natural habitats. Take a hike to one of the many lookout points or hang out in Halls Gap and marvel at the mobs of kangaroos grazing on the soccer field.

Victoria is a multi-faceted destination which really does has something for everyone.&nbsp;
A helicopter flight over the Twelve Apostles is a truly spectacular experience and showcases unrivalled views of the rock formations below.&nbsp;
For families and animal-enthusiasts, a visit to Ballarat Wildlife Park offers the opportunity to get up close and personal with some of Australia&rsquo;s indigenous animals.
&nbsp;

Wherever possible, don&rsquo;t rush a Great Ocean Road itinerary. There is so much to see and explore along this stunning stretch of coastline that to try and squeeze it all into a couple of days would mean missing so much of what this route has to offer!

Just Back From… Victoria, Australia

Just off the coast of Exmouth or Coral Bay is the World Heritage Site, Ningaloo Reef. If you&rsquo;re travelling between the months of March to August, this incredible reef becomes home to the largest fish on the planet, the whale shark. Swimming with these gentle, slow-moving giants is sure to be one for the bucket list.

New South Wales has so much incredible wildlife on its doorstep, including one of Australia&rsquo;s most elusive, the Duck Billed Platypus. The iconic Blue Mountains are known for lush forest valleys and meandering waterways which provide the ideal nesting ground for these shy animals, what&rsquo;s even better, they are only a 3 hour drive from Sydney. To get the best chance of glimpsing a platypus, get yourself to the entrance of the Jenolan Caves at dusk or dawn especially during winter months. At certain times of year these areas can be closed off due to flooding, in which case the next best place to visit is the Wingecarribee River around Berrima.

10 Unmissable Sights in Australia’s Northern Territory

If possible, try to get a day flight into <a href="../../holidays/australia/western-australia/perth">Perth</a> and sit on the right-hand side of the plane to get a fabulous view of the city as you land at the airport. Perth has developed a lot over the past few years and continues to grow, which is a very exciting time for the city.
I explored the city on a walking tour with Urban Adventures which was a great way to discover the hidden laneways and charming bars as I made my way from downtown to Elizabeth Quay. When I travelled, the Yagan Square had only just opened in the heart of the city and was already the new place to be spotted in town. With a great market, fantastic eateries and bars alike, this was a wonderful spot to round off the day.
Only 30 minutes outside of the city is Swan Valley which offers a fantastic range of wineries that are easy to access on the <a href="../../tours/australia/western-australia/tour-swan-river-wine-cruise" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Swan River Wine Cruise</a>. You can visit Sandalford Winery which offers world-class wines and a fantastic restaurant to try.
&nbsp;

The next morning I prepared myself for a full day of travelling up the coast towards Nambung National Park to see the Pinnacles on a fascinating <a href="../../tours/australia/western-australia/tour-pinnacles-koalas-and-sandboarding" target="_blank" rel="noopener">small group tour.</a>&nbsp;En route, we stopped at Caversham Wildlife Park which rescues native Australian animals and offers up-close animal encounters. As I wasn&rsquo;t able to get a quokka selfie at Rottnest Island, I was compensated with a kangaroo selfie instead! After meeting a wombat (which are much larger than you&rsquo;d think) and a family of koalas, we were back on the road to Cervantes to visit the Lobster Shack, the home of WA&rsquo;s rock lobster fishing community.
After a delicious lobster lunch, we finally headed into Nambung National Park to see the eerie Pinnacles, which to this day still have scientists baffled as to how they were formed. We heard tales of how scientists believe it was possibly once an undersea forest, or perhaps rock formations, or possible ancient termite mounds, but we&rsquo;re still none the wiser as to what formed this strange landscape!
After spotting a wild emu and exploring this mesmerising landscape, we headed back south, but not without stopping at Lancelin for a 4WD dune drive over the white sand dunes at sunset and a spot of sandboarding. It was a fantastic day out and some incredible landscapes to experience!

I set off travelling south to <a href="../../holidays/australia/western-australia/margaret-river-and-the-south-west-coast" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Margaret River</a> but had planned a stop only an hour south of Perth in Rockingham, to head over to Penguin Island. After a warming coffee from Pengo&rsquo;s Caf&eacute;, I boarded the boat from Rockingham Jetty and set off for a <a href="../../tours/australia/western-australia/tour-dolphin-cruise-and-penguin-island" target="_blank" rel="noopener">90 minute dolphin watching cruise</a>. As we sailed Shoalwater Marine Park, we were not disappointed as we were greeted by a pod of six dolphins, including at least three calves. I have done many dolphin cruises around the world and not seen any, so this was such a welcome sight!
As we continued to admire the gracefulness of the dolphins, we also spotted ospreys, pelicans and the seals of Seal Island bathing in the sun, before finally reaching Penguin Island just in time to watch the rescued penguins being fed. This island is home to over 1,000 penguins, and because they hunt during the day it&rsquo;s rare to spot them outside of the ranger-run Discovery Centre. However, it is a fantastic walking area and a great place to have a picnic before catching the ferry back to the mainland, which is where I continued my journey south to Bunker Bay in the Margaret River region.
&nbsp;

My first day of exploration of this gorgeous area was with the wonderful brothers that run the <a href="../../tours/australia/western-australia/tour-coastal-and-wildlife-eco-tour" target="_blank" rel="noopener">South West Eco Discovery Tours</a>. I was lucky enough to experience all three tours they operate, and I loved every minute of my time with them. Our first stop was to an abandoned golf course located next to their old high school where kangaroos have now overrun the fields.
After a quick safari drive, we headed out to Geographe Bay where Mike quickly jumped into the water with the underwater camera so that I could see the marine life from the comfort of our tour vehicle. We then headed out to a fantastic lookout before walking part of the Cape to Cape Track, one of the Great Walks of Australia. As I travelled in Australia&rsquo;s autumn, I have to say this was the perfect time of year for this tour! The colours and the views were just amazing and after enjoying some local produce and the biscuits lovingly made by their wives, we watched the horizon and dolphins playing in the surf.
After lunch we visited some small, family-run winery estates and I loved the wine so much I bought some! Finally, I rounded off the day travelling to a protected grove where the brothers are dedicated to helping grow the woylie population who are only found in this region of Australia. Part of the quokka family, there are sadly only 30 woylies left and all money raised on this tour to spot them is dedicated to the conservation and preservation of their habitat, so will hopefully help the species thrive once more. It was this day that helped me to decide that Margaret River is possibly one of the greatest places on earth.
&nbsp;

As if I hadn&rsquo;t experienced enough of Australia&rsquo;s wines, my next day was dedicated to experiencing the three wineries that have been deemed Ultimate Winery Experiences by Tourism Australia. First stop, the founding wine estate in Margaret River, <a href="../../tours/australia/western-australia/tour-ultimate-winery-experience-epicurean-vasse-felix" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Vasse Felix</a>. Here I embarked on a tour of the estate, met most of the team that helps to make the wine and watched the pressing process (all done by machinery these days!), before heading to the restaurant for a tasting menu lovingly paired with the estates wines. Famed for their Chardonnay, I have to say their wines changed my opinion of this particular type of grape. My next stop was Leeuwin Estate, famed for its art gallery whose artwork dons their labels. Here, I enjoyed a seven course wine flight paired with all of the wines, starting with oysters and white wine, right the way through to a spicy octopus dish with their Cab-Sav-Grenache blend.
Just as I was fit to bursting with delicious food and fabulous wine, I then headed out to <a href="../../tours/australia/western-australia/tour-ultimate-winery-experience-origins-of-voyager-estate" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Voyager Estate</a> to see their unique cellar and to taste their award-winning menu. Cleverly built into the cliff-side, their cellar aptly stores the wine like no other cellar in the world creating a unique flavour. It was with this in mind that their chef designed a menu to denote every flavour present in this wine. My particular favourite was the dessert with the ros&eacute; wine, as this picked out all of the sweet, sour and yet creamy notes of this wine perfectly. I would recommend visiting all three if you have several days, as each had its own sense of identity and all are worth exploring.
This area is so much more than just the wineries, so you could easily spend a prolonged period of time in this region and just skim the surface on what it has to offer. I will definitely be returning to Margaret River!

I start in Perth (Boorloo), surprisingly easy to get to from Europe. From London, you can get a direct flight and in less than 17hrs you've landed Down Under. Perth has plenty to offer, boasting the title of the sunniest capital city in Australia and with its 19 beaches within easy reach of the city alongside its captivating nature such as its most famous resident - the quokka, you can be sure you won't be lost for things to do. A personal favourite of mine was wandering through King's Park, the fabulously exotic park and botanical garden overlooking Perth (Boorloo).
It's tempting to stay in Perth (Boorloo) as there&rsquo;s a real slice of Australian life here. Whether it&rsquo;s the connection to nature, the friendly locals, the delicious and innovative cuisine, or the vibrant street art, however The Coral Coast Highway awaits.

It takes only a 2 hour drive to get to one of the first unique sights &ndash; the Pinnacles Desert in Nambung National Park. Some say it looks like the Moon with its otherworldly, rocky shards bursting out of the ground; all I know is, the sunset&rsquo;s golden light makes it look like nowhere I&rsquo;ve ever seen before. This must be seen to be believed.

The roadtrip continues the next day with urban sprawl having faded away, leaving you with orange and crimson sands dotted with bright blooms of wildflowers. By the time I reach the next stop &ndash; Kalbarri National Park, the riot of colour has reached its peak &ndash; the wildflowers really saturate the landscape with shocking pinks and beaming yellows. It&rsquo;s a joy to take a hike along the national park&rsquo;s gorges and clifftops to see the rocky outcrops decorated with so much life.

Whilst waiting for my fish and chips in Kalbarri, I meet a local who, after hearing I am heading up to Coral Coast to my next stop, Monkey Mia, recommends a jaunt to Dirk Hartog Island &ndash; just a boat ride off the coast. So, that is what I do &ndash; not before visiting the famous dolphins that come to shore in Monkey Mia in the mornings. It's all dependent on Mother Nature blessing me with a good visitation but me and the group who turned up on the beach the next morning are overjoyed by a short but very sweet visit from two bottlenose dolphins that come so close that we can almost touch them. I&rsquo;ve never felt so close to nature.
Inspired by the dolphins, I take to the sea myself and head to Denham to get the ferry to Dirk Hartog Island. Here, the water is calm and an intense turquoise that seems to complete the colour wheel alongside all of the other natural hues and shades I have seen in beautiful Western Australia. I board another set of wheels here as I spend the day exploring the island&rsquo;s pristine nature reserve on a 4WD tour and snorkel off the rugged coast looking for marine life. Topping it all off with a sunset at Australia&rsquo;s most western point &ndash; Australia&rsquo;s last sunset of the day is an exceptional one. I snuggle down in rustic but comfortable lodgings on the island with the sound of crashing waves just within my perception as I turn off my reading light.

Back on the mainland, I keep driving north and wonder at how easily I&rsquo;ve just settled into life exploring the Coral Coast, its just peppered with spectacular sights in a unique environment unlike nowhere else. However I am also keen to get to my final destination - Ningaloo Reef (Nyinggulu).
Ningaloo Reef (Nyinggulu) allows me to tick off a big entry (literally) on my bucket list &ndash; swimming with whale sharks. I base myself in Exmouth but I am also tempted to take in Coral Bay as well, where you can also swim with Manta Rays. However from Exmouth, the whale sharks are the big deal and I booked a tour well in advance to ensure that I don&rsquo;t miss out. The tours are very eco-conscious and sensitive over these marine creatures&rsquo; welfare and its certainly not a free for all with hundreds out boats out on the water &ndash; it&rsquo;s a much more controlled and intimate affair.

A few of us head out on a sturdy vessel early in the morning and we are given strict rules on how to keep our distance from these beautiful giants of the ocean. 'After some searching, we find an improbably large shape cruising through the seas. I gingerly don my mask and fins and find myself swimming alongside an enormous female whale shark, longer than a family car, almost as long as a bus. So large, but so graceful, and so happy to just ignore me as she glides effortlessly through the ocean.&nbsp;
Eventually, my fins are no match for my new swimming pal and she fades into the deep blue. It's been a dream like occurrence but so has most of this trip. Surreal views, peaceful but enthralling experiences and making lifelong memories, immersed in my surroundings and really feeling like I am living each moment.
As much as I want to keep it to myself, I just can&rsquo;t, Western Australia&rsquo;s Coral Coast is a phenomenal place to visit &ndash; a kaleidoscope of singular experiences &ndash; a world of once in a lifetime adventures at your fingertips.

Tasmania has remnants of many colonial buildings and estates, some of which remain just as they did when they were built whilst others have been converted into hotels, bookstores, or caf&eacute;s. About 40% of Tasmania is protected as national parks, reserves and World-Heritage wilderness, so it&rsquo;s no wonder Tasmania is awash with stunning flora and fauna which can&rsquo;t found anywhere else - not even mainland Australia! Ancient and amazing trees and forests flourish in Tasmania and in particular, the Australian mountain ash can reach to more than 100m rivalling redwoods for size. Some specimens of Lagarostrobos franklinii, also known as huon pine, are thousands of years old and takes this slow- growing tree 500 years to reach its height of 30m.&nbsp;
At the other end of the floral scale, alpine plants abound in areas such as the Central Highlands &ndash; some forming cushions just centimetres in height, including endemics Abrotanella forsteroides bearing tiny yellow flowers. Visitors to Tasmania in the southern hemisphere&rsquo;s autumn (April and May) can see the island&rsquo;s spectacular seasonal show: &lsquo;the turning of the fagus&rsquo;. Nothofagus gunnii (tanglefoot or deciduous beech) is a Tasmanian native shrub with twisted branches and unusual crinkled leaves. Its foliage turns fiery oranges and reds, providing swaths of colour that rival autumnal leaf displays anywhere else in the world.&nbsp;
Wombats and wallabies, possums and pademelons, as well as the famous Tasmanian devil, call Tasmania home. Locals in Tasmania adore their special creatures, and they have many expert guides to help you identify them. So whether you want to watch echidnas nosing through the leaf litter or take up an underwater encounter with a leafy seadragon &ndash; there&rsquo;s a tour whatever the season to help you achieve this.

Discover Tasmania, Australia's Best Kept Secret

I was recently lucky enough to tour the beautiful and mesmerising lands of the <a href="../../holidays/australia/northern-territory" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Northern Territory</a>. With the closest Australian capital city to Asia (Darwin), it&rsquo;s only 18 hours away from the UK, making the NT a convenient starting point for an Australian adventure. It&rsquo;s an incredible Territory with so much to offer, split across two main areas &ndash; the Top End and the Red Centre.
In the Top End you&rsquo;ll be wowed by beautiful sunsets, natural hot springs and World Heritage landscapes. We started here, enjoying the vibrant bar scene and culinary hot spots of Darwin before jet skiing across the harbour to explore hidden beaches. From Darwin we moved on to Kakadu National Park, Katherine and Nitmuluk National Park where we hiked and helicoptered our way around taking in the unrivalled wildlife, ancient rock art and stunning gorges.
Further south, The Red Centre is home to Australia&rsquo;s most dramatic, beautiful scenery including the awe-inspiring icons of Uluru, Kings Canyon and Kata Tjuta. We explored the various gorges, chasms and canyons of the West MacDonnell Ranges and Kings Canyon before riding camels at sunset and dining in the desert under the stars. Finishing in Alice Springs, I visited an amazing sanctuary for orphaned kangaroos and reflected on what a varied and authentic Australian experience I had been fortunate enough to have in the Northern Territory.

The NT has two distinct seasons: the tropical summer and winter dry season, both offering their own benefits. Dry season offers plenty of events and festivals and lovely warm weather compared to the rest of Australia. I visited in March, the tail end of the tropical summer when the flora and fauna were in full bloom. We also had the unique opportunity to access certain parts of the national parks by boat. Seeing the stunning waterfalls without the crowds that the dry season can attract was also an added bonus.

The Northern Territory is unlike any other region in Australia and what I loved most about it was how much the indigenous Aboriginal culture remains strongly at the heart of the Territory. You can learn about the culture, art and history of the Aboriginal communities whilst also revelling in the exciting wildlife and natural wonders that the territory has to offer. The Northern Territory offers something for everyone with such a wide range of activities on offer paired with delicious cuisine and a laid back atmosphere.

My highlight was taking a helicopter from Uluru to Kings Creek Station and staying in a beautiful luxury lodge in the middle of the outback where we enjoyed a BBQ as we watched the sunset over the outback. The visit to a kangaroo sanctuary in Alice Springs was out of this world and we got to help nurse some of the rescued orphan baby roos before they are released back into the outback.

Give the NT the time it deserves. I would recommend 2 weeks here alone as there is so much to offer. It can easily be built into longer Australian itineraries, and works especially well with South Australia if you choose to take the iconic rail journey aboard The Ghan.

Two and a half hours north of Sydney and you&rsquo;ll find Australia&rsquo;s dolphin capital - Port Stephens. Head two hours north of Port Macquarie and you&rsquo;ll find the exciting city of Coffs Harbour. En route stop at Emerald Beach to see kangaroos grazing by the beach then continue to the multitude of exciting activities this harbour city has to offer. For water lovers there are plenty of fantastic snorkelling and diving sites in the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Whilst on land, discover verdant rainforest walks both on the ground and above the tree canopy in Dorrigo National Park.

Beautiful Byron Bay will charm any visitor with it&rsquo;s relaxed outdoorsy atmosphere and charismatic boutiques. Start your day watching the sunrise over Cape Byron, the most Easterly point on Australia&rsquo;s mainland. After a delicious locally sourced breakfast at one of the town&rsquo;s organic cafes, head to the beach to try your hand at some surfing or kayaking whilst keeping a look out for the resident dolphins and turtles. Canberra – A Different Kind of Capital…

I recently spent a couple of days in beautiful Noosa on the east coast of Australia. My only regret? I wish I&rsquo;d had more time!
Located at the heart of the Sunshine Coast, any Queensland holiday simply must include a stop here. Its subtropical warm and sunny climate means you really can visit year round, with the best time probably being Spring which is September to November.
&nbsp;

Noosa is surrounded by nature and is the perfect place to unwind, whether you&rsquo;re travelling as a couple, with friends or with your family.
Spend time wandering quaint Hastings St, lined with boutique shops, splendid caf&eacute;s and upmarket restaurants, stroll along Main Beach which runs parallel or take a hike in the lush national park, located 5 minutes out of town. For families, I&rsquo;d recommend opting for accommodation close to the town&rsquo;s gentle river waterways which boast a plethora of activities for all ages. The river foreshore is also the perfect spot for picnics or barbeques.
It really is as idyllic as it sounds! You could easily spend a week here but 3 days is a good amount of time if you&rsquo;re on a longer holiday.

My highlight was the fabulous day I spent in the <a href="../../tours/australia/queensland/fraser-island-and-the-sunshine-coast/tour-noosa-everglades-cruise-and-canoe" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Noosa Everglades</a>. I got picked up in town and whisked off for about a 45 minute drive out of town. First we enjoyed a leisurely cruise through the wetlands before we jumped in a canoe and paddled 5km down the river (we earned our coffee and muffins on the other end)! It was the most peaceful and beautiful setting &ndash; with the lush greenery drooping into the river and the water so still it was mirror-like. It felt like a unique and special experience!

There is a host of lovely accommodation options in town but if you&rsquo;re feeling a tad adventurous, opt to stay at Habitat Noosa for a fabulous glamping experience in the wetlands. The tents are super cosy and comfortable and there were hundreds of kangaroos hopping around right outside the tents!

15 Days Experiencing the Highlights of Australia

Just off the coast of Western Australia lies the natural wonderland of Rottnest Island. Just like Perth and the surrounding area, Rottnest can be visited year-round, though you get the best weather from September to May with the hottest months being January and February.
Just a short 30 minute ferry from laidback Fremantle or a slightly longer journey from cosmopolitan Perth, Rottnest island is easy to include within any WA itinerary; especially for animal lovers, families or couples alike.

When you think Rottnest Island, you think&hellip;QUOKKAS! These lovable marsupials with their diminutive size, adorable faces and extraordinary tameness are one of Rottnest Island&rsquo;s main draws. Within a few minutes of disembarking your ferry you are likely to see at least a few of these cheerful little animals grazing on the lawns, scampering after a leaf in the wind or just chilling under a tree away from the sun.
If you can tear yourself away from these loveable creatures, hire a bike and get away from the crowds to discover the island. Rottnest Island is a treasure trove of hidden coves and rugged beaches, perfect for exploration, especially as the island barely has any cars so cycling is the best way to get around. If you don&rsquo;t want to cycle, perhaps a spot of surfing, snorkelling or hiking would suit better? The island is perfect for any of these outdoor pursuits.

It was amazing to get all the benefits of a resort with a beautiful pool area, gourmet dining plus a great cocktail menu, whilst still retaining a genuine connection to nature - with beach access 1 minute stroll away. Where else can you step out of your deluxe tent to find a quokka waiting outside to greet you?

Make sure you stay for a night or two, there&rsquo;s so much to do, plus in the evenings, the day trippers have left, leaving you to enjoy the island vibes. And best of all, that&rsquo;s when all the quokkas are at their most active and you might just get that perfect quokka selfie!

Just Back From… Rottnest Island, Western Australia

Start your trip in laidback, cosmopolitan Adelaide. Mornings are the perfect time to head to the Central Markets, a thriving hub of authentic eateries boasting delicious local produce. Once you&rsquo;ve sampled your way around, explore the many art galleries and museums, the lush Botanic Gardens, or those after something more exhilarating can climb the roof of the Adelaide Oval for the best views of the city skyline.&nbsp;
As evening arrives a vibrant foodie scene awaits. Enjoy quirky rooftop hangouts and cosy wine bars &ndash; the city&rsquo;s laneways, very much reminiscent of those of its sister city Melbourne, are positively buzzing.

If you have more time, head to the gorgeously charming seaside town of Glenelg, just a 20 minute tram ride from Adelaide&rsquo;s centre. Stroll along the foreshore, spot wild dolphins from a catamaran cruise or simply relax at one of the beachside bars as you watch the sun set.

Less than an hour north of the city lie the rolling hills of the Barossa Valley. One of the world&rsquo;s great wine regions which produces many household names, particularly Shiraz for which the region is famous, a visit here is an absolute must for any oenophiles.&nbsp;
Heading 40 minutes south of Adelaide you enter the McLaren Vale &ndash; much smaller in scale but no less scenic, this is the home of sustainable wine production &ndash; and the Fleurieu Peninsula &ndash; often referred to as &lsquo;natures playground&rsquo; and offering some of South Australia&rsquo;s finest coastal, scenic and culinary experiences.
&nbsp;

Next up is the undeniably gorgeous and rugged Kangaroo Island. Just a 45 minute ferry or 30 minute flight from the mainland and you&rsquo;ll be transported to a world of breathtaking natural scenery, mouth-watering food and wine and some of the best and most unique wildlife spotting in the whole of Australia.&nbsp;
Discover the ochre hues of the Remarkable Rocks (very much true to their name), marvel at the iconic structure of Admiral&rsquo;s Arch and pay a visit to the friendly residents of Seal Bay &ndash; a real highlight of any trip! The island is also a mecca for bird lovers, plus we were lucky enough to spot baby koalas in the treetops, an elusive echidna crossing the road and more kangaroos and wallabies than we could shake a stick at!
&nbsp;

When it comes to beaches, Kangaroo Island would give anywhere a run for its money with its clear turquoise waters and soft white sands, with Stokes Bay, which has just been awarded &lsquo;Australia&rsquo;s best beach&rsquo;, as my personal favourite. After all that sightseeing, stop off at one of the casual roadside shacks to enjoy some well-earned seafood (top tip: the King George Whiting sandwiches and chips are incredible).&nbsp;
A few days on Kangaroo Island is sure to see you refreshed and revitalised for the rest of your holiday.

While you may not have heard of outback town Marla before, it&rsquo;s fair to say it&rsquo;s worth the early start just to see the sunrise over this South Australian desert landscape.
The train arrives in the dark and guests are welcome to step off to stretch their legs as the sun light slowly bathes the surrounding outback and start their day with a steaming mug of coffee and bacon and egg roll. Take a moment to enjoy the stillness on this short 45 minute stop with the promise of the day stretching before you. Re-board the train (you can even hop back into bed!) and brunch will be served from 10am.

Not a formal Off Train Experience as such but an added bonus! Magnificent Manguri is a rail siding 30 minutes outside of Coober Pedy in South Australia and in this instance, darkness is our friend. The first thing you need to remember, of course, is that the seasons are reversed in the Southern Hemisphere, so when it&rsquo;s winter here it&rsquo;s summer in <a href="../../holidays/australia" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Australia</a>.
However, the spring, summer, autumn, winter distinction only really holds in the southern half of the country. On the coast, spring, summer, and autumn are glorious times to visit Australia. Australia&rsquo;s interior is largely semi-arid desert so summer days are extremely hot and winter nights can be very chilly.&nbsp;
In the tropical north of <a href="../../holidays/australia/queensland" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Queensland</a> and the <a href="../../holidays/australia/northern-territory" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Northern Territory</a>, where the temperature is pretty consistent, the rain and humidity are more important considerations.&nbsp;
Named in true laconic Aussie style, the &lsquo;dry&rsquo; runs from April to November, and you can expect clear skies and hot dry days. The &lsquo;wet&rsquo; on the other hand brings high rainfall and humidity for the rest of the year. Remote roads are generally closed and many of the waterfall out of bounds.

January to March is a fabulous time to visit the south of Australia, with warm sunny dry days perfect for touring. Naturally it&rsquo;s also the most popular time of the year to visit and most Australians take their holidays at this time too, so make sure you book well in advance.
The wet season is in full flow in the tropical north of Australia, bringing high humidity and storms. It&rsquo;s still possible to visit the <a href="../../holidays/australia/queensland/islands-of-the-great-barrier-reef">Great Barrier Reef</a> at this time but the weather can be unpredictable. <a href="../../holidays/australia/western-australia/the-coral-coast">Ningaloo Reef</a> on the west coast is dry but hot!
In the interior of Australia, days are very hot and dry with pleasant balmy evenings.

Autumn colours explode across south <a href="../../holidays/australia/new-south-wales-and-canberra" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New South Wales</a>, <a href="../../holidays/australia/victoria" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Victoria</a> and <a href="../../holidays/australia/south-australia/adelaide" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Adelaide</a>, and it is arguably the best time to visit the outback in the interior.

June to September is absolutely the prime time to be visiting the tropical north of Australia, with warm sunny dry days and great conditions on the Great Barrier Reef. &nbsp;In the south you can expect much cooler temperatures and more rainfall. If you are heading into the desert interior, days are pleasantly warm but nights are decidedly chilly. Pack a warm jumper!

June: Whale Sharks at the Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia. The world&rsquo;s largest fish visits the northern shores of Western Australia at this time of year.
June to September: Whale Watching. Tasmania (June &amp; July-Freycinet &amp; Bruny Island) New South Wales (Sydney, May-Nov, Merimbula &amp; Byron Bay), Western Australia (Albany) Victoria (Warnambool), Queensland (July-Oct Hervey Bay &amp; Aug-Oct Fraser Island).
May/June: Vivid Sydney The world&rsquo;s largest festival of light. See many of the city&rsquo;s iconic sights become the canvas for astounding light shows.

The Gascoyne-Murchison region in Western Australia

October to December is a great time to visit just about anywhere in Australia and is the perfect opportunity to get out and explore the beautiful outdoors. As the weather is just about perfect and the region is much quieter, this is my top pick of when to visit <a href="../../holidays/australia/queensland" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Queensland</a>.
Humidity does start to build in the north at the tail end of November with the odd thunderstorm. The wildflowers are in full bloom in <a href="../../holidays/australia/western-australia" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Western Australia</a>, an incredible floral display carpeting the outback with over 12,000 species of flower.

November: Melbourne Cup Carnival. The nation stops for one of the world&rsquo;s most famous horse races.&nbsp;
