A Guide to Trekking in Peru

Your day will start with a gentle wake-up call from the crew before a delicious breakfast. Rising early means you will be able to see the animals at their most active while temperatures are cooler.

Set off on a panga (motorised dinghy) towards today&rsquo;s first exciting sightseeing spot. Your guide will advise whether it will be a wet landing (arriving in the bay and wading ashore) or dry landing (stepping from the panga directly onto land). Depending on the island you visit you may be greeted by sea lions lounging on the sand, land iguanas basking in the sun or curious blue-footed boobies.

Iguazu Falls: Iguazu Falls can be visited year-round, but for the most impressive water flow, the rainy season from December to March is advised. For fewer crowds, consider visiting in the spring or the autumn.&nbsp;
Mendoza: Wine buffs will enjoy Mendoza at any time of the year, but the autumn months from March to May are particularly special as this is the grape harvest season.

The Best Time to Visit Argentina

Ushuaia, the southern-most city in South America, lies open to the elements, surrounded by mountains with wide views across the sea towards Cape Horn. A haven for seafood lovers (heralded as the best place to have king crab!), the city acts as a jumping off point for numerous cruises to lands lesser travelled, including Antarctica and the Patagonian Fjords.&nbsp;
Earlier this year, I was lucky enough to head to this far-flung location to board the <a href="../../hotels/south-america/chile/patagonia-cruising/australis-cruises---fjords-of-tierra-del-fuego" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Australis Cruise</a> for a four night, truly once in a lifetime experience. The ship sails to Cape Horn before continuing past glaciers, icebergs and mountains whilst travelling through the Beagle Channel, the Strait of Magellan and on to Punta Arenas in Chile.
The cruises through the fjords operate from late September through to early April with each stage of the season offering something different. For those looking for a chance to see penguins on Magdelena Island, November through to March will give you the best chance. If you are looking for the best weather then December and January tend to be the best bet (however the weather this far south is incredibly changeable regardless of the time of year!). Travelling at the end of the season may make for less reliable weather and fewer penguins but will reward you with beautiful autumn colours.
The Australis cruise serves as an incredible way to link Argentina and Chile without taking extra flights and offering the opportunity to immerse yourself in a corner of the world seen by very few. When paired with a stay in or near to Torres Del Paine National Park you will have a truly unforgettable trip seeing the highlights of Patagonia on both sides of the border.

Ever fancied knowing what it feels like to stand at the end of the earth? Taking the Australis cruise will make you feel as far from civilisation as it is possible to feel.&nbsp; I was incredibly lucky as the weather and tides played ball allowing us to disembark at Cape Horn, the southern-most tip of South America.&nbsp; Here we met the lighthouse keeper and his family (along with the southern-most housecat in the world) who live in almost complete isolation on this incredibly exposed peninsula. From here we sailed through the Fjords with daily trips off the ship to visit multiple glaciers (who knew they could all be so different?!), hike to viewpoints and take in the history of the region.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Every daytrip offered is very educational; the guides are all incredibly knowledgeable with each having their own specialist interests meaning you come away with a wide range of information. For each trip there is a briefing in which the guides explain the difficulty rating and provide options for those who would like something more or less challenging.
Back on the ship the experience is truly all inclusive. Breakfast is plentiful and three course meals are served for lunch and dinner along with wine and a selection of other drinks. The bar serves drinks throughout the afternoon and evening and you will be met after most excursions with hot chocolate and whisky to warm your cockles.&nbsp;
The cabins are comfortable and spacious, and the communal areas provide multiple options for relaxing and catching up with other passengers between trips. My best advice, however, would be to spend as much of your time as you can manage on the top deck watching the world go past (don&rsquo;t forget the binoculars!). The views are out of this world and constantly changing &ndash; every time you think &lsquo;it can&rsquo;t get better than this&rsquo;, it does. If you&rsquo;re lucky, you may even spot sea lions, dolphins, penguins and even whales in the waters alongside the ship.&nbsp;
If you&rsquo;re thinking: &lsquo;this all sounds great but I&rsquo;m not a cruise person&rsquo;, think again! I would have said the same, but I loved every second of this trip. This cruise is suitable for anyone with a sense of adventure and a good level of mobility (able to climb stairs/climb in and out of zodiacs). By taking the plunge with this cruise you are affording yourself an amazing opportunity to experience part of the world that would otherwise be unreachable.
&nbsp;

There aren&rsquo;t enough superlatives in existence to express what a special experience this cruise is. Every single minute of the day is filled with something new and exciting that would undoubtedly be a highlight of any other trip. The scenery, the wildlife, the service and the crew are second to none. In this job I have been lucky enough to go on some incredible trips but this one stands out as the best I&rsquo;ve ever been on; I can&rsquo;t recommend it highly enough.

There&rsquo;s no such thing as bad weather in Patagonia, just bad clothing. Go prepared with full waterproofs, waterproof boots and waterproof gloves and you&rsquo;ll be able to make the most of every minute because believe me, you don&rsquo;t want to miss a thing.

Just Back From… The Patagonian Fjords

<a href="../../holidays/south-and-central-america/galapagos-islands" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Gal&aacute;pagos Islands</a> are a year-round destination and opportunities to see the magnificent wildlife are constant due to their non-migratory nature. If we were to break down the year into seasons, there would be two.&nbsp;
From January to June, you can expect a warmer yet wetter climate, in the second half of the year from July to December, cooler and drier weather follows. Fortunately, the Gal&aacute;pagos boasts an enviable location on the equator so in the wetter season, the weather is still hot and gorgeous but with intermittent heavy rainfall. In terms of temperature, it ranges from 24&deg;C to 30&deg;C.&nbsp;
In short, there is no best time to visit the Gal&aacute;pagos Islands but read on for a breakdown of each time of year.
&nbsp;

At the very beginning of the year, the rainy season comes into play, with peak rainfall and humidity in March. Each day will be filled with sunny spells and intervals of tropical downpour. For those who love to snorkel, this is the prime time due to high sea and air temperatures.&nbsp;
The Western islands will have a slightly cooler temperature, off the coast of Isabela Island snorkellers may be lucky enough to see penguins swimming beside schools of tropical fish!
&nbsp;

The end of the rainy season is upon us. The islands will be green as far as the eye can see and the waters will boast astonishing visibility (perfect for a snorkel). This time of year is considered by many to be the best time to visit the Gal&aacute;pagos Islands.&nbsp;
On Espa&ntilde;ola Island, the waved albatross arrives at the end of March. By the time its April, the island is the only place in the world where you will get the opportunity to encounter their courtship ritual.&nbsp;
On the subject of wildlife, green sea turtles and land iguanas start to spawn. On North Seymour, the courtship dance of the blue-footed boobies can be observed.
&nbsp;

Halfway through the year, the gar&uacute;a season commences. This is when sea and air temperatures reduce, and ocean currents become more powerful. Mornings will begin with mist that will gradually be eradicated by the heat.&nbsp;
Although cooler temperatures may not be for everyone, they are for dolphins and whales! At this time of year, these marvellous mammals are present off the coast of Isabela Island with the addition of active sea bird communities.&nbsp;
On Santa Cruz Island, the migration of giant tortoises from the highlands comes into play as they search for new nesting grounds.
&nbsp;

This period in the Gal&aacute;pagos Islands is a wildlife overload! For the sea lion population, it is pupping season, this is especially the case in the Central and Western islands. Whilst the swallow-tailed gulls and Nazca boobies&rsquo; nest, the Gal&aacute;pagos hawks start their courtship rituals.&nbsp;
On Bartolom&eacute;, penguins are very active at this time of year and can be seen diving like torpedoes. On Espa&ntilde;ola and Isabela, blue-footed boobie chicks are visible to be marvelled at in October. Regarding the actual weather, the sea will be choppier with their strongest currents in August and September when the temperatures are at their lowest.
&nbsp;

November to December is generally a good time to visit the Gal&aacute;pagos Islands, as the climate becomes more relaxed. Temperatures start increasing again and the seas become calm (meaning clearer waters).&nbsp;
If you were to snorkel around Champion Islet (on Floreana Island), you may be subject to a nibble on the fins at the hands of playful sea lion pups. The waved albatross chicks are now mature enough fly, boobies will be fishing, green sea turtles start to mate, and giant tortoise eggs begin to hatch between December and April.

Arguably one of the world&rsquo;s most famous beaches, and for good reason too, Copacabana Beach and its striking geometric promenade stretches along Rio de Janeiro&rsquo;s skyline, with skyscrapers sprawling upwards into the mountains. The beach is one of many in Rio and offers a chance to soak in the sunshine without having to travel out of the city.
Locals often flock on weekends, but with white sands continuing for 4km, there is enough space for everyone to enjoy some beach time during an otherwise packed trip to this energetic city.

Located in the north of Brazil around 4 hours from Fortaleza, Jericoacoara is considered the &lsquo;mecca for wind and kite surfing&rsquo;.
The sweeping golden sand dunes, impressive rock formations and idyllic fishing village have been ranked in the &lsquo;Top 10 Most Beautiful Beaches Worldwide&rsquo; by The Washington Post, and the area offers a range of boutique properties to choose from for the perfect retreat.

Renowned for snorkelling and diving opportunities, the archipelago 350km off the coast of Brazil features a variety of remote beaches and jagged coastlines within a protected marine park and Brazil&rsquo;s first national park.
Baio do Sancho on the main island was voted the &lsquo;Best Beach in the World&rsquo; on TripAdvisor and has won countless other awards. Visitor numbers to the island are restricted to preserve the natural beauty, therefore providing a sense of tranquillity and paradise, perfect to round off a busy Brazil itinerary.

I visited San Ignacio (Cayo District), Placencia and San Pedro (Ambergris Caye), therefore covering a variety of landscapes and sights and all in all a wonderful introduction to this hidden Central American gem.&nbsp;
I visited a number of resorts and hotels during my short time in Belize. One of Belize&rsquo;s many attractions is the ease in which you can go from staying in stunning eco-lodges within the remote jungle such as <a href="../../hotels/south-america/belize/cayo-district/blancaneux-lodge" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Blancaneux Lodge</a> (owned by esteemed flm director Francis Ford Coppola) one week, to easily transitioning to staying in luxurious beach resorts in Placencia such as <a href="../../hotels/south-america/belize/placencia/turtle-inn" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Turtle Inn</a> the next.

For me, the main draw of Belize is its cultural heritage, varied wildlife, glorious beaches combined with a plethora of attractions on offer and a wonderful year-round warm weather climate.&nbsp;
Mexico often receives the top honours when it comes to visitors wanting to experience Maya culture and explore attributed attractions. However, Belize&rsquo;s incredible Caracol and Xunantunich sites are both easy day trips from San Ignacio, and despite being Belize&rsquo;s most visited attractions, these are still tranquil spots that feel a world away from the throngs of tourists that visit most of Mexico&rsquo;s Maya sites.&nbsp;
As well as boasting the second largest barrier reef on the planet, home to manatees, whale sharks, turtles and rays, this incredible country also possesses the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife and Jaguar Reserve - the only jaguar sanctuary in the world! Combined with verdant rainforests with over 500 species of birds - Belize is a nature lover&rsquo;s paradise.
&nbsp;

As mentioned above, Belize is home to the second largest barrier reef on the planet. But unlike it&rsquo;s&nbsp;Australian superior, Belize&rsquo;s barrier reef is home to one of the world&rsquo;s most magnificent natural sights, the Blue Hole.&nbsp;
Many places have vibrant coral reefs to snorkel in, and many places have such clear waters and a kaleidoscope of tropical fish that diving makes for a magical experience. Not only does Belize possess these iconic qualities, but you also have the chance to experience a truly remarkable sight with the <a href="../../tours/south-and-central-america/belize/tour-blue-hole-flyover" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Blue Hole Flyover.</a>&nbsp; Soar above the shimmering waters of the Caribbean on an unforgettable scenic flight over the Blue Hole. Of course, the beaches around Placencia are well worth spending some extended time after a tour, but spending time to witness Belize&rsquo;s verdant central regions, learning about the country&rsquo;s ancient civilisations and marvelling at it&rsquo;s iconic wildlife is what makes this country so special.

Bird lovers will find Costa Rica a paradise throughout the year, but the dry season is especially great for bird watching, as the clear skies and lush landscapes offer outstanding conditions for spotting both resident and migratory species.
Some of the beautiful bird species you can expect to see in Costa Rica include: parrots, toucans, hummingbirds, herons, quetzals, scarlet macaws, kingfishers and hawks.

Costa Rica hosts frequent festivals and events throughout the year. Some of the most noteworthy ones include Carnival in February, Semana Santa (Holy Week) in March or April, and Independence Day celebrations on the 15th of September. When is the Best Time to Visit Mexico

Transfer to the airport for your flight to Placencia where you will stay at the charming Placencia Resort. Peru for… Everyone!

Where do I start?! Guyana is a truly wild destination and away from the populated coastal areas it really is nature&rsquo;s territory &ndash; expect to see wildlife everywhere. For me, the Harpy Eagle is amazing and should be on every bird watcher and wildlife lovers list; also known as the flying wolf, the sight of seeing this majestic predator is magical.&nbsp;
High on the tick list of wildlife sightings is the elusive jaguar. Although the chance of seeing one of these beautiful big cats is small, the best place to spot them is in the gaps of the forest along roads or the river edge.
&nbsp;

I could give you a long list but if I had to pick one then it would Kaieteur Falls which is absolutely incredible.&nbsp; Starting with a short flight over the rainforest from Georgetown, you&rsquo;ll be met by a national park guide who will take you on the rainforest trail to the falls. Looking down from the top of those powerful waterfalls is an experience I will never forget.
&nbsp;

Accompanying researchers from Caiman House as they cruise along the Rupununi River after dark searching for Caiman. You feel alone in the river but as soon as the torches are switched on the vast number of nocturnal eyes staring back at you tells a different story. The team of researchers catch the Caiman before tagging and releasing back into the wild &ndash; don&rsquo;t worry the tagging of Caiman doesn&rsquo;t harm them and takes place in a different boat to lodge guests!

I have two! The first lodge I want to highlight is the Iwokrama River Lodge which provides a fascinating mix of jungle activities and scientific research. An added bonus here is that the Iwokrama Forest Reserve is also home to the wonderful canopy walkway for a birds eye view of the treetops. The second is the fantastic Rewa Eco-Lodge. Here there is a strong focus on community-tourism as the lodge is built and run by the local Amerindian community.
&nbsp;

The noise of the jungle at night is phenomenal! When it rains in the jungle, it really rains and the sound of this combined with the chorus of frogs and jungle night sounds is utterly mesmerising.
&nbsp;

Whilst travelling in Guyana prepare for surprises, pack your sense of adventure and make sure you try the local rum, you won&rsquo;t be disappointed! Also, I recommend taking US dollars as they are easier to exchange into Guyanese dollars than sterling and cash in local currency is needed for jungle lodges as credit cards are not used.&nbsp;
And finally, just go! Due to the limited number of tourists it really is like nowhere else but with the launch of the new British Airways flight from London Gatwick, accessing this wonderful destination is easier than ever before.

The Best Beaches in South America

Not strictly known for its beach, Tortuguero National Park lies on the northern part of Costa Rica's Caribbean coastline, and it's beautiful Playa Tortuguero (turtle-catcher beach) is a naturalists dream. Known for its many turtle hatcheries, many visitors come here between July to October to see these fascinating creatures emerge from the sea to form their nests, and weeks later to watch the newly hatched turtles race down the beach to begin life in the Caribbean Sea.
Playa Tortuguero backs onto the waterways and trails of the national park and it's one of the best parts of the country to visit to experience its biodiversity.&nbsp;This peaceful 5km stretch of sand is only accessible by air or by water and usually visited for its abundance of wildlife, but it is devoid of sun-loungers, bars and the usual sights you'd find on beaches elsewhere. I recommend staying at one of the tranquil eco-lodges in the area which have fully inclusive touring packages for the perfect opportunity to spot all the local fauna by boat or by foot (don't forget your binoculars!). The area has become known for having some of the best beaches in Costa Rica and is a destination that should be included on every trip!

Up on the north west coast of Guanacaste province you'll find the west-facing Playa Grande sitting just outside of the lively beach town of Tamarindo. A well known spot for those partial to riding the waves, Playa Grande is billed as one of the best surfing beaches in Costa Rica.&nbsp;
There are many other great beaches in this part of Costa Rica too; the pink sands of Playa Flamingo are only a 10 minute drive away where you can enjoy many water-based activities on offer along the beachfront. At only an hour from Liberia airport, this area should be considered a beach destination in its own right. So should you fancy hitting the surf, snorkelling in the clear waters of the bay, or enjoying a sundowner made from the local rum then Playa Grande is the Costa Rica beach for you!

Probably the most famous of Costa Rica's national parks and popular amongst locals and tourists alike, Manuel Antonio is a stunning stretch of the Pacific coastline consisting of mangrove forest bordered by beautiful white sand beaches punctuated with rocky outcrops. To avoid the crowds you'll find on the black sands of nearby Playa Espadilla, the local government have put a limit on how many people can enter the national park and there's a $16 entrance fee per person. Trust me, it's well worth it!
Take a relaxing walk along the decked walkways through the mangrove to reach the beach and you'll see, jutting out from the sand, a small peninsula which harbours a cheeky monkey population. So be aware taking any food to the beach! If the monkeys aren't lurking and waiting to steal something, then the raccoon-like coatis will be! However, should you fall afoul of them, you can always nurse your pride at one of the many colourful bars along the beach.
A must-see if only coming to Costa Rica for a short trip, the beach life here is one of the best examples of 'Pura Vida' (as the locals say) that the country has to offer.

One of the most uniquely shaped beaches in Costa Rica, or even the world, Whale Bay (as it's known in English) is located on the south western Pacific coastline. Actually two beaches merged in the centre forming a sandbank in the shape of a giant whale's tail, this interesting bay is situated next to the pretty coastal village of Uvita. Definitely one of Costa Rica's fastest growing tourist destinations along this coast, Uvita is a lovely little spot with something going on to suit everyone.
Due to the area being surrounded by a marine national park, fishing is prohibited which allows for fabulous snorkelling opportunities just off the coast. Staying in the vicinity, you can easily visit the scenic Osa Peninsula a short drive to the south and, if you're feeling lucky, grab a guided tour of the reserve and you might even catch a glimpse of the elusive jaguar. The best time to visit here is between December and April when you can board one of the local catamarans and head out into the bay for an unforgettable whale watching experience.

Hidden away on the remote western coast of the Nicoya peninsula, the chic little surf town of Nosara and the gorgeous beach of Playa Guiones reward those who can brave the long journey from the capital and the winding jungle-lined roads with stunning sugar-white sands and unforgettable sunsets. Whether catching a wave at dawn or horse riding along the shoreline at dusk, the beachlife here is aimed at those who like to get up early and be active, which makes up for the lack of nightlife.
With easy road accessibility to the rest of the Nicoya, you can spend a day walking the canopied wildlife trails of Cabo Blanco or watching the turtles laying their nests at the Ostional Wildlife reserve. If you fancy something a little more low-key then maybe take part in one of the local beach yoga lessons. Most travellers dont make it this far west, so it is perfect for those looking for a little rest and relaxation away from the crowds on one of Costa Rica's most beautiful beaches.

Travellers familiar with the palm-studded coastlines of the Caribbean might feel more at home in Puerto Viejo, with its picture postcard white sand beaches and reggae playing beach bars. Influenced by the Jamaican immigrants that came to the province in the last century, you'll find English being spoken and Caribbean food stalls lining the streets.
Playa Cocles is one of the prettiest of the beaches in this region of Costa Rica with its graceful palm trees blending into the rainforest. Punta Uva to the south of the town has an easily accessible coral reef situated just offshore, perfect for snorkelling. Combining Chile and Argentina made easy with TF

It&rsquo;s early morning but the equatorial sun is already beating down as the water laps gently against the panga (small motorised dinghy) I&rsquo;m sitting in. Behind me a diving blue-footed booby makes a loud splash as it plunges into the sea in search of fish. On the rocks to my right a sea lion slips into the water to cool off, whilst an iguana soaks up the sun.
It&rsquo;s my first full day in the incredible Gal&aacute;pagos Islands. Yesterday I flew out having spent a couple of nights in Ecuador&rsquo;s beautiful capital city of Quito. Landing in Baltra, one of the two main airports in the Gal&aacute;pagos, it wasn&rsquo;t long before I spotted my first native animal, with a land iguana camouflaged in the red coloured rocks next to the tarmac as I walk from the plane to the airport terminal. He is missed by most of the passengers who are already making their way inside, fussing over their belongings and digging out their passports.
Documents checked and luggage collected, the representative from my cruise is easily found waiting in the small arrivals area. I&rsquo;m directed onto a waiting bus whilst my luggage is transferred separately. I&rsquo;ll be reunited with it in my cabin later this evening. Driving across Baltra only takes a few minutes, but we stop to spot more land iguanas by the side of the road. It seems you are never more than a few minutes away from your next wildlife encounter.
On reaching the Itabaca Channel we disembark and board a small boat to cross to Santa Cruz Island. From here it&rsquo;s on to the highlands to stop at a tortoise reserve for lunch. We&rsquo;ve not even reached the reserve when I spot two giant tortoises wandering by the side of the road. These iconic creatures are entwined in the history of these remarkable islands - &lsquo;Galapago&rsquo; means tortoise in old Spanish. There are actually several different species of tortoises across the archipelago, although sadly due to human activities several are now extinct. These days breeding programmes are boosting the numbers of the remaining species and they are easy to spot in the wild on Santa Cruz.
Although it&rsquo;s only been 20 minutes since leaving the port in blazing sunshine the temperature is remarkably different. Noticeably cooler and slightly overcast with even a threat of rain the climate provides lush vegetation which feeds the tortoises. However, by the time I&rsquo;ve descended to the main town of Puerto Ayora on the south coast of the island the heat is back.&nbsp;
My home for the next few days, <a href="../../hotels/south-america/ecuador/galapagos-cruises/la-pinta">La Pinta</a>, is moored offshore in the harbour. Newly renovated, this 24 cabin ship is ideal for exploring the islands. Both smaller and larger vessels are available as well, although with a maximum limit of 100 guests, the Gal&aacute;pagos is free of the larger cruise liners you may find around the Caribbean or Mediterranean. As I jump in the panga to transfer to the ship I spot a marine iguana swimming alongside. Found only in the Gal&aacute;pagos, they are one of the many endemic species which helped lead Charles Darwin to his theory of evolution by natural selection.

By the time I awake the next morning we&rsquo;ve sailed the short distance around the coast to Eden Islet. Although I hear us weighing anchor in the earlier hours, I barely noticed we&rsquo;d moved. The current gets a little stronger as the morning has worn on, so after exploring the coastline by panga, my first chance to snorkel will have to wait until a little later.&nbsp;
During a delicious lunch (the food is outstanding throughout) the ship sails across to Sombrero Chino, or &lsquo;Chinese Hat&rsquo; island. I&rsquo;m told to look out for dolphins and whales which were spotted here a week ago, but they are not to be found today.
It&rsquo;s February and the sea is lovely and warm, but I still don a &lsquo;shortie&rsquo; wetsuit which at least will help protect against the sun and, so I&rsquo;m told, aid buoyancy. I&rsquo;m barely in the water for a couple of minutes before I see a penguin diving in alongside me. The swimming is easy with the current behind you and I follow the coral reef along the shore. The naturalist leading the group points to anything I might miss, including small but friendly reef sharks circling below. The panga captains are on hand ready for anyone who is ready to dry off, but I&rsquo;m mesmerized by the marine life beneath me and stay in as long as possible.&nbsp;
Eventually though it&rsquo;s time to come out. I don&rsquo;t want to, but I know I will have plenty more wildlife encounters over the duration of my 4 night cruise.

Bartolom&eacute; Island, which I visit early the next morning, is truly spectacular. There are fewer animals here and it&rsquo;s a steep climb to the top of the island along wooden steps and boardwalks. The view from the top across the arid landscape to the famous Pinnacle Rock and Santiago Island beyond is incredible. As at every landing site in the archipelago all the passengers from La Pinta are split into groups, each a maximum of 16 people with staggered departures to prevent any disturbance to the local ecosystems. I take my last picture and begin the descent back down, just as the next group arrives, simultaneously catching their breath from the climb and gasping in awe at the landscape spread out before them.
Before lunch there&rsquo;s time for a ride in the glass-bottom boat, a great way to see the underwater world without getting wet. Starfish, shoals of colourful fish and the even the occasional reef shark all swim underneath as we bob around in the water close to the shore.
There&rsquo;s a choice of activities on Santiago Island this afternoon: snorkelling from the white sand beach or hiking across solidified lava flows. I&rsquo;ve always been fascinated by volcanoes so the opportunity to walk on old lava is not one I can pass up. There are a number of volcanoes around the islands and whilst the most active lie to the west, it turns out the lava here is only around 100 years old and you can still see the patterns and bubbles as the lava has cooled and turned to rock. Here and there the odd cactus has pushed its way through and bright red sally lightfoot crabs can be found where the lava meets the sea.

The next morning we&rsquo;ve sailed across the equator and moored in the crescent shaped bay of Genovesa Island, the most northerly of the Gal&aacute;pagos Islands open to the public. The island is particularly renowned for its birdlife and is home to the red-footed booby, which is only found in a couple of locations around the archipelago.
The day starts with a &lsquo;wet landing&rsquo; at Darwin Bay. Greeting me as I wade ashore through the shallow waters are some playful sealions, who are seemingly unmoved by our arrival. Nesting in the nearby shrub can be spotted Darwin&rsquo;s finches, frigatebirds with a distinctive bright red gular sack on their necks and of course, red-footed boobies.
Later in the morning there&rsquo;s a chance to snorkel along the rockface around the bay. The water is crystal clear here, and both fur seals and sealions jump in and out of the water to swim remarkably close, and there is no shortage of fish and both reef and white-tipped sharks to spot. This afternoon we climb the steep Prince Philip&rsquo;s Steps to the plateau on the top of the island. The birdlife here is plentiful, and our eagle-eyed guide even spots an elusive short-eared owl.

Overnight we sail back to Baltra and in the morning bid farewell to La Pinta, along with her outstanding expedition leader, naturalist guides and crew who have looked after us so well for the last few days. Whilst my voyage is at an end I&rsquo;m not leaving the Gal&aacute;pagos just yet. A few more days staying on land is the perfect accompaniment to a cruise.&nbsp;
On Santa Cruz I explore the renowned Charles Darwin Research Station to see the work being done to protect the islands and rid them of unwanted invasive species. Later in the afternoon I take to the sea to kayak along the coast, and am greeted by both rays and sea turtles popping up above the water.&nbsp;
On Isabela island the small but charming town of Puerto Villamil, with its sandy streets and laidback vibe is home to hundreds of marine iguanas. Lying on walls beside beach houses, bars and restaurants they are oblivious to the bustle of people around them. Nearby, American flamingos can be found nesting in the mangroves.
Up in the highlands I hike to the top of the Sierra Nevada caldera. It&rsquo;s cloudy and wet and I&rsquo;m initially disappointed, however through a break in the mist the caldera opens below me stretching for miles in each direction. I barely have time to get my lens cap off my camera and it&rsquo;s gone again, obscured into the clouds. Maybe it&rsquo;s for the best, as I&rsquo;m told it&rsquo;s only been about 18 months since it last erupted.
Eventually, it is time to move on and explore more of Ecuador's mainland. With so many good memories from the last few days it&rsquo;s hard to pick a highlight with each island offering such a different experience. You can never see it all though, and I&rsquo;ve no doubt that one day I&rsquo;ll be back to experience this phenomenal destination again.

A Glimpse of the Galápagos

So what better way to start this adventure than to get stuck straight into the most famous rainforest of them all, the <a href="../../holidays/south-and-central-america/amazon">Amazon</a>! I can maybe count on one hand the amount of people who I know have actually been to this part of the world, and what&rsquo;s more, been there in style!
The Amazon needs no introduction. I have been booking mostly nature based trips for myself for years now, and this was going to be the cr&egrave;me de la cr&egrave;me. Let&rsquo;s face it, for most this is a once in a lifetime opportunity!

Our first stop, was the Tambopata Research Centre (TRC) and it was awesome!
I loved every second of my time here. Who gets to say that in one day they saw a mother tarantula protecting her babies, a jet black mussuranna snake, wild caiman chilling on floating logs, and capybara swimming with birds catching a free ride on their back. TRC allows you to explore the wonders and adventures of the Amazon without needing to&nbsp;compromise on comfort.&nbsp;&nbsp;
&nbsp;

So how did we get to our lodge? We first flew to Puerto Maldonado - this is the access point for most Peruvian Amazon lodges and many of them are within an hour&rsquo;s drive or boat ride from here, but no, not ours! We were to head further into the mighty rainforest! Following a 90 minute road transfer, as the forest built up around us, we transferred into a wooden longboat for a further 1 hour 45 minutes upstream. It soon became apparent that the transfer was part of the adventure. In the first 30 minutes, whilst munching on our wonderfully prepared hot lunch (served out of a banana leaf), we had already started spotting the wildlife! But something told me this was just the beginning.

We arrived at the TRC about two and a half hours later feeling pretty much ready to crash out... until we saw our rooms and found a second wind. Wow, was all I could say! They were boutique, rustic and only had three walls! The entire back of the suite just didn't have a wall, it opened straight into the Amazon. There is something unrivalled and special about the sound of waking up to a tropical rainstorm in a rainforest with a howler monkey marking his territory. It&rsquo;s like we were camping deep in the jungle, but from our perfectly made four poster beds. That howler monkey cry is a sound I&rsquo;ll never forget, and the best alarm ever.
From jungle night walks to clay licking macaws, over the next two days we saw all sorts of birds, bats, bugs and families of spider monkeys pass by our rooms! Just letting us know they are there and making us feel right at home.

So what does a day in the life at the TRC look like? Early morning jungle treks and leisurely river safaris (complete with a stop in the middle of nowhere for a beer) make up the lodges activities with delicious food in between. Other activities typically include night walks, evening lectures, birdwatching and trail walks just to name a few.&nbsp;Our guides were constantly spotting little tree frogs, red monkeys, more birds and more snakes!&nbsp;

None of these great activities would have been possible without the expert guides, and I have to say, expert is an understatement. This is where I introduce you all to Eric! Eric, to me, is one of the best guides in the world, who took us on our very first night walk looking for anacondas.
&ldquo;Seriously&hellip;? You&rsquo;re serious aren't you Eric? Oh my, he&rsquo;s serious, he wants to go to like all the riverbanks off the trail in the Amazon at night looking for anacondas! Alright, let&rsquo;s have another Pisco Sour and do this&hellip;.&rdquo;
That night walk was one of the best things I&rsquo;ve ever done in my life. My inner Indiana Attenborough kicked in as we trekked through the jungle for about 90 minutes. This had to be one of the most enjoyable, wildest and exciting wildlife encounters I&rsquo;ve ever had, it was an adrenaline rush the entire time. All I kept thinking was &ldquo;I&rsquo;m not meant to be here, this is ridiculous!&rdquo; I&rsquo;ll never forget the deafening but also zen-like sound of that place at night. Every turn had something new to see or explore; imagine a mix between a nature trail and a haunted house. I felt safe and looked after the entire time, and we saw and learned so much along the way. I don't think I stopped smiling for the entire time. Thank you Eric! I&rsquo;d have done that all week with you if I could have.
Also, we didn't find an anaconda this time. Good.

And then, just when you thought this little piece of paradise couldn&rsquo;t get any better, we find the spa. A spa that includes many traditional Peruvian treatments that utilise the wealth of natural ingredients available on their doorstep.&nbsp;

Tambopata Research Centre has the art of 'comfort adventure' down to a tee and I would more than recommend it to anyone with a flair for adventure and interest in exceptional wildlife encounters. It would be the perfect place to celebrate a honeymoon or celebration, as it&rsquo;s an experience you&rsquo;ll be sure not to forget.

Adventures in the Amazon - the Comfortable Way!

My first experience of <a href="../../holidays/south-and-central-america/argentina">Argentina</a> was on an Intrepid small group adventure tour. After setting off from Santiago by road, we travelled for a few hours along winding mountain roads to arrive at the border. The Andes stretched before us; vast and spectacular. Vivid blue skies with white capped peaks. Beautiful. It was worth the wait. It took time, but I was in no rush.&nbsp; Soon enough we had checked into our Mendoza hotel for two nights and were ready for dinner. Just a short walk to a local restaurant. Steak accompanied by Malbec was very popular amongst my companions, but I opted for chicken and seafood which was delicious.&nbsp;&nbsp;
The next day we set off on a <a href="../../tours/south-and-central-america/argentina/tour-central-valley-wine-route-signature-tour">full day winery tour</a>. Visiting local family-operated vineyards was a highlight. The mountains of Mendoza visible in the distance. Many produce Malbec, however we did manage to taste a variety of sparkling wine. The owner, in his 80&rsquo;s and still riding his bicycle a few kilometres each day around his property, was very enthusiastic and made sure we all enjoyed our tasting. Lunch was relaxed and involved many courses.&nbsp; Later that evening we embarked on a food exploration of the city on foot. Empanadas and wine in a local bar, followed by olive oil tasting in another venue, then our main course at the next restaurant, and dessert from the local gelateria which has been in the same family for generations.&nbsp;

It's just a short flight from Mendoza to Buenos Aires followed by a road transfer on to the <a href="../../holidays/south-and-central-america/argentina/estancias-near-buenos-aires">Estancia</a>, our home for the night. Staying in a traditional homestead over 100 years old with a local family captured for me the true sense of what it means to be Argentinian. I was greeted like a returning member of the family with hugs on arrival, dogs running around the lawn near the pool, vines wrapped around the lace ironwork of the front verandah, horses in the neighbouring fields and hills in the distance.&nbsp; There was love in the cooking; dinner consisted of simple regional dishes prepared to perfection. Such generous portion sizes, we rolled into bed that evening.

<a href="../../holidays/south-and-central-america/argentina/buenos-aires">Buenos Aires</a>. I had many notions about this wonderful city. So lively. Filled with history &amp; charm. Delicious food and wine. Tango. The warmth and generosity of the people. It is captivating. Our road journey from the Estancia back to the city took some time. We then continued on to our host&rsquo;s private home on the outskirts of Buenos Aires to experience Asado &ndash; BBQ. Growing up in Australia I was used to BBQ, but not like this! After sourcing the ingredients with our host, we headed back to their residence and the feast began; Argentine beef and plenty of local wine. We also had fish, chicken and vegetables for the non-beef eaters. We felt like part of the family.
Our Buenos Aires hotel was just a short walk from San Telmo. Home to fantastic restaurants, bars and a Sunday market that stretches for blocks selling handmade goods, curios, street food and buskers promoting their original songs.&nbsp; Exploring Buenos Aires on foot is a great way to enjoy the city. Strolling down Grand 9 de Julio Avenue past the Obelisk &amp; Palacio de Tribunales, heading to Plaza de Mayo for the Cathedral, La Boca for its football stadium and colourful neighbourhood where local artists hang out and Tango is performed outside the bars to entice patrons. Recoleta Cemetery is the final resting place of Eva Peron and many well known Argentinians. The beautiful white marble statues glisten in the sun and add to the etherial atmosphere. Wide tree-lined streets filled with cafes, restaurants and bars also make it a popular neighbourhood to explore. Finishing the day with a delicious meal and Tango is a wonderful way to complete this introduction to BA.

<a href="../../holidays/south-and-central-america/argentina/iguazu-falls">Iguaz&uacute; Falls</a>. The Argentinians share this natural wonder with their neighbours in Brazil. &nbsp;A direct flight from Buenos Aires and then a short transfer had us happily ensconced in our hotel for the next two nights. A full days adventure on the Argentinian side of the falls begins at the national park entrance where we joined the small train that weaves through the park. Following the walkways along to the suspended platform to the impressive Devil&rsquo;s Throat, the largest waterfall located in the park. Afterwards we set off on a small group tour through the jungle in an open 4WD truck to view the flora and fauna. It was great fun. This was followed by an exhilarating boat ride on the Iguaz&uacute; River. My tip is to either change into your bathers or bring a an extra set of clothes as you will get very wet. It was fantastic. Afterwards we headed back to our hotel for a relaxing evening.
The following morning we enjoyed a half day tour of the Brazilian side of the falls. Walking down into the canyon to the panoramic views of over 200 falls, the sound of falling water all around us, we continued on to the lower catwalk platforms to take fantastic photos. Covered by a plastic poncho to protect our clothes from the spray did the trick, and we managed to avoid getting soaked. The glass elevator ride to the cliff face offered another great vantage point to take in the views. If you feel like an aerial view, there are short helicopter rides that fly over both sides of the falls, and for the bird ethusiasts there is a dedicated bird park to explore.

What I remember most about my experience in Argentina is the warmth and generosity of it's people. The 80+ year old winemaker cycling through his vineyard laughing at our surprised expressions; the Asado hosts who welcomed us into their home for a BBQ feast; the estancia owners who greeted us with hugs and broad smiles as we walked up to the homestead; local musicians at the Sunday market in San Telmo, and the enthusiasm of the local guide in Iguazu Falls. This combined with the incredible natural beauty, history, culture, food &amp; wine and Tango, ensure that Argentina will be welcoming visitors for a long time to come.
