A Short Guide to Trekking in Nepal

Your day will typically begin with a wake-up call before the sun rises. Freshen up and head to the lounge where a steaming mug of tea or coffee awaits before you board your jeep.
&nbsp;

Standard game drives use Forest Department jeeps, which are generally open-top with two elevated cushioned bench seats behind the driver. You will be accompanied by a government naturalist, and while we will always use the best available, they may not be up to the standard of African safari guides. In addition, if your game drive is part of a Guided Group Tour, these may use larger canter vehicles - elevated, open safari vans designed to carry from 12 to 20 passengers.&nbsp;
On our private tours we offer game drives on a private basis, except in Kaziranga and Nagarhole National Parks where they will be shared (up to five passengers). If staying at certain Ranthambore lodges, upgraded options are also available: superior game drives offer more comfortable vehicles, while premium game drives also have the benefit of the lodge&rsquo;s dedicated naturalist/drivers, who are amongst the best in the reserves.

At this magical time of day, the jungle slowly awakens and animals are often at their most active, so you&rsquo;ll spend the next few hours searching for wildlife while your guide brings to life the secrets of the animal kingdom. Be aware that to manage levels of disturbance to the tigers, game drive routes are strictly assigned in advance by the authorities and are strictly adhered to, so there is little chance of variation even if tigers are spotted elsewhere in the park during your visit.

On your return, it&rsquo;s time to enjoy a hearty breakfast before a few hours at leisure. Depending on your lodge&rsquo;s facilities, you may wish to relax by the pool, indulge in a spa treatment, enjoy one of the optional activities available, or simply catch up on your sleep. Later enjoy a laidback lunch.
&nbsp;

Mid-afternoon, as temperatures start to cool and predators awake from their afternoon slumbers, you&rsquo;ll set off on an afternoon game drive. Whilst nothing compares to the thrill of meeting a tiger up close, they are notoriously difficult to spot and you may go on several drives without seeing one. You will however discover plenty of colourful birdlife and a diverse range of smaller animals and antelopes. The afternoon is also a good time to try and spot elusive leopards and sloth bears.
&nbsp;

Join your fellow guests for pre-dinner drinks, reliving the day&rsquo;s captivating sightings. Evening meals are often communal, occasionally with the in-house naturalist and may be served in the main dining room or in an atmospheric setting, perhaps under the stars or beside the campfire. Most lodges provide wildlife presentations or short films after dinner, although many guests opt for an early night.
&nbsp;

Make sure you wear plenty of clothing layers as the dawn/dusk temperatures can drop considerably compared to the heat of the day. As the jeeps are open, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are essential. A cool box with water, soft drinks and some snacks is provided on each game drive. We recommend you bring your own binoculars.&nbsp;

What to Expect on a Tiger Safari in India

The weather in <a href="../../holidays/asia/indian-subcontinent/sri-lanka" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sri Lanka</a> is generally wonderful between January and March, making it a great time to visit with warm dry sunny days typifying most of the island.
The south and west coasts are hot and dry so it&rsquo;s a great time of year to combine these beaches with a tour of the interior. In January and February the Maha monsoon is still affecting the east coast areas of Trincomalee and Passekudah so it&rsquo;s not the best time to be enjoying Sri Lanka's beaches here.
&nbsp;

April in Sri Lanka can often be the hottest month of the year with the least rainfall, so can be a good time to visit. Although temperatures and humidity start to rise in Sri Lanka's cultural sites such as Sigiriya and the Cultural Triangle, the weather is generally pleasant and the landscapes are lush and green. This is also one of the best times to be visiting the higher elevations of the Central Highlands, including Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and the Tea Country, as the evenings are not so cool.

The Yala monsoon (or Southwest monsoon) affects the south and west of Sri Lanka between May and June bringing heavy rains to the southwest and western coasts of the island, including the Tea Country and the beaches. Seas can often also be very choppy here during this time and swimming is often not recommended.
Rains can be heavy but are often short with glorious sunshine in between, particularly in May. If you're looking for a dry stretch of sand to relax on, now is the time to start looking to the north east of Sri Lanka, to the Trincomalee Coast and Passekudah.

July to September is known as the inter-monsoon season in Sri Lanka, and is a transitional period where you can expect occasional short showers but also some glorious weather; so all in all a great time to explore!
In June the tail-end of the Yala monsoon still affect the beaches on the south and west coast, so the eastern beaches are still your best bet for warm, dry and sunny days. In August the rainfall drops significantly in the south west so the beaches here become a good choice, with September becoming wetter once again. The Indian Ocean coast on the east coast of Sri Lanka is still glorious during both months, so this is a great time to visit.
&nbsp;

October and November, known as the Northeast monsoon period, sees higher rainfall with typical heavy showers in the afternoon. Tourist sites can be less crowded and the main area of Yala National Park reopens after its yearly closure, with abundant wildlife on display.&nbsp;
The Yala National Park is also at its best at this time of year for wildlife viewing, as the animals congregate around watering holes.
&nbsp;

December is generally a great time to visit Sri Lanka, with hot, dry weather following the end of the monsoon in the beach resorts of the south west coast. The north east is still feeling the effects of the Monsoon though, so heading south is your best bet for time on one of Sri Lanka's beautiful beaches.&nbsp;
This time of year in these parts of Sri Lanka are also ideal for outdoor activities, watersports and exploring cultural sites.

The Kandy Esala Perahera, held in July or August every year, is a colourful, lively and raucous Buddhist pageant steeped in tradition and history. Running over ten nights, the spectacle is a tribute to Lord Buddha&rsquo;s sacred tooth relic which is housed at the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy.

Keep in mind that Sri Lanka&rsquo;s dry season is the most popular, and therefore the busiest time for tourism. Prices for accommodation and tours may therefore be a little higher during this period. How to See India in Absolute Luxury

<a href="../../hotels/india/sri-lanka/yala-national-park/uga-chena-huts" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Uga Chena Huts</a> is a 5★ boutique property situated between the beach and jungle on the outskirts of Yala National Park. Located on the south coast of Sri Lanka, it's three hours from the Tea Country and two hours from Galle, making it easy to fit into almost any itinerary.
Uga Chena Huts can be visited year round, although February to June is usually best for wildlife sightings. It&rsquo;s worth noting that Yala National Park is shut in September and October during the drought period.

I&rsquo;ve been on safari in Africa but never seen the elusive leopard. Yala NP has the highest density of leopards in the world so we hoped we might see one during our visit.
As for the hotel, Uga Chena Huts has been on my radar for years, and is the epitome of laid back luxury. On our first safari we were unbelievably lucky to see a leopard hunting on an open plain! The largest and arguably the king of tiger territory in India, Kanha National Park has a good number of tigers. The large grasslands here offer excellent viewing opportunities and combined with its lush forests and large bamboo groves, Kanha provides a varied safari experience. It is also home to a wealth of other wildlife, including sloth bears and the endangered beautiful barasingha deer.
Top Fact: It really is home to Shere Khan! This reserve is said to have been Rudyard Kipling's inspiration for The Jungle Book.&nbsp;
Stay: You can't do better than base yourself in <a href="../../hotels/india/tiger-reserves-and-wildlife-sanctuaries-of-india/kanha-national-park/banjaar-tola">Banjaar Tola</a>, one of the Taj &amp; Beyond properties that are raising the standards of Indian wildlife experiences. Quieter than many of the other national parks, Pench National Park has a lower population of tigers but far fewer tourists so offers a more relaxing and back to nature experience than the other reserves. It is renowned for its fantastic bird watching and has large herds of majestic Indian bison.
Top Fact: Pench was home to Collarwali, one of India's best known tigers who lived to an impressive 16 years of age and sadly passed in January 2022. Famous for being a tigress 'super mum,' Collarwali gave birth to a record breaking 29 cubs and starred in the BBC wildlife documentary 'Spy in the Jungle' which followed the lives of four tiger cubs over two years. Although she is no longer with us, her legacy is celebrated and reigns on through future generations.
Stay: Bring out your inner child and sleep in a real tree house at <a href="../../hotels/india/tiger-reserves-and-wildlife-sanctuaries-of-india/pench-national-park/pench-tree-lodge">Pench Tree Lodge</a>. Raised up 6 metres above the ground on stilts and built around the upper branches of sturdy mahua trees, these fabulous tree houses offer a unique, but supremely comfortable, place to stay. Guests staying here also use the least busy entrance to access the park and often they'll be the only jeep entering. Tigers do love to stroll on the cool, sandy vehicle tracks in the very early mornings so being the first vehicle on the road at opening time means there is a good chance of coming across a tiger right in front of you.

Tucked away in the northeastern corner of India you will find Kaziranga National Park. Ask any wildlife enthusiast and you're sure to find Kaziranga at the top of their 'must go' list. It now has the highest density of tigers anywhere in the world! The tall elephant grass which dominates the landscape here does make tigers rather difficult to spot. However if they do decide to stay away, you&nbsp; should be rewarded with multiple wonderful one-horned rhino viewings instead, so you won't be disappointed. This park is home to over two thirds of the remaining world's population of these magnificent beasts.

Welcome to <a href="../../holidays/asia/indian-subcontinent/india" target="_blank" rel="noopener">India</a>! Arrive at Delhi Airport and transfer to your hotel where the rest of the day will be at leisure.

How to Spend 13 Days Exploring Rajasthan

Once a trading port for the Dutch and British,&nbsp;Negombo has developed into a bustling modern&nbsp;town with a handful of reminders of its colonial&nbsp;past. Situated close to Sri Lanka's international airport,&nbsp;it makes a convenient rest stop before or after&nbsp;a flight.
The wide golden sand beach is dotted&nbsp;with fishing boats and there are a number of bars&nbsp;and restaurants in the area. Just 20 minutes&nbsp;drive north, the long beach at Waikkal is&nbsp;secluded and quieter.
&nbsp;

Boasting a lovely quiet ribbon of beach, the small&nbsp;village of Wadduwa is relatively undeveloped with&nbsp;just a small number of hotels and local shops&nbsp;along the coastal road. To the south, near the&nbsp;busy market town of Kalutara, a wide, golden&nbsp;sand beach extends either side of the Kalu&nbsp;Ganga river mouth and lagoon, where a range&nbsp;of watersports are possible. Located a couple of&nbsp;hours from the airport, both these resorts are&nbsp;ideal for an easily accessible beach stay.
&nbsp;

Bentota has long been a favourite amongst&nbsp;holidaymakers for its peaceful and picturesque&nbsp;wide golden arc of sand and laidback atmosphere. Many consider this to be one of the best beaches in Sri Lanka. Away from the coast the calmer waters of the&nbsp;Bentota Ganga lagoon are ideal for watersports&nbsp;and there are a few local restaurants.
Close by, the&nbsp;Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project is worth&nbsp;a visit to see efforts made to protect Sri Lanka&rsquo;s&nbsp;five species of turtle from extinction.

Lying on the Sri Lanka's southernmost shore, the ruggedly&nbsp;beautiful beaches close to historic Galle may&nbsp;be narrow, but are peaceful and secluded with&nbsp;just a handful of hotels hugging the coastline.&nbsp;Heading east via Koggala to Tangalle and beyond&nbsp;lie dozens of beautiful secluded coves and a lush&nbsp;green interior. Wherever you stay, the UNESCO&nbsp;World Heritage listed fort city of Galle is worth&nbsp;a day trip to discover its colonial sights, caf&eacute;s&nbsp;and boutiques.

North of the historic city of Trincomalee (known&nbsp;as Trinco to the locals), miles of white sand stretch&nbsp;up the coastline. With Pigeon Island National Park&nbsp;just offshore, fringed by coral reef, it&rsquo;s a great&nbsp;base for snorkelling and diving. Kuchchaveli offers&nbsp;virtually deserted beaches and calm clear waters,&nbsp;bordered by tropical jungle. Trinco itself is worth&nbsp;a visit to see the historic fort and the famous&nbsp;Koneswaram Kovil Hindu temple.

Scenic Passekudah has recently opened up to&nbsp;tourism and today a number of resorts (like the beautiful Uga Bay pictured) line the&nbsp;wide bay. The lagoon offers shallow warm waters&nbsp;protected by a reef, making it perfect for families&nbsp;and great for watersports such as kayaking and&nbsp;windsurfing. The beach here is long, wide and sandy, and is considered to be one of the best beaches on the east coast of Sri Lanka.
The town of Batticaloa, 30 minutes&nbsp;drive to the south, is the closest hub for flight&nbsp;transfers to Passekudah and is also home to a&nbsp;historic Dutch fort.
&nbsp;

The driest time for Sri Lanka's west and south coast&nbsp;is December to March, followed by July to August, and while&nbsp;swimming in the sea is possible, many beaches&nbsp;are affected by large waves and strong&nbsp;currents year round.
The east coast offers a contrast with&nbsp;calmer waters and a drier and more consistent&nbsp;climate which is at its best March to September. Consider&nbsp;taking a scenic flight transfer to the east coast&nbsp;to cut your journey time and enjoy a stunning&nbsp;bird&rsquo;s eye view of the island en route.

The Best Beaches in Sri Lanka

After arriving on your flights from the UK or Ireland we&rsquo;d normally recommend at least one night in Negombo to rest and recuperate before setting out on your explorations.&nbsp; 
As we were travelling on a <a href="../../tours/india-the-himalayas-and-sri-lanka/sri-lanka?&amp;style=private-tour">bespoke private tour</a> we were greeted by our local representatives on arrival at the airport. We were then introduced to our fantastic driver-guide Darshana, who gave us a great insight into what we could expect over the coming days during our short drive to Negombo.&nbsp; Negombo is nestled just 30 minutes to the north of Colombo and is blessed with vast sandy beaches decorated by traditional Oruwa fishing boats. When we got to our beachfront hotel, the <a href="../../hotels/india/sri-lanka/negombo/heritance-negombo">Heritance Negombo</a>, we took some time to have a stroll on the beach and to relax with a drink at the swim up bar in the hotel pool. We were all aware of the wonderful beaches in advance but we were pleasantly surprised by just how easy it was to take a stroll from the gates of our hotel to numerous local restaurants and bars along a strip parallel to the beach.&nbsp; We all felt completely safe and had a great night out meeting locals, other tourists and celebrating the start of our Sri Lankan adventure.
TOP TIP: There&rsquo;s a great variety of properties on offer in and around Negombo, either on the coast or further inland. Set amongst lush manicured grounds, <a href="../../hotels/india/sri-lanka/negombo/wallawwa">Wallawwa</a> offers a stylishly restored colonial manor house with its own extensive vegetable gardens supplying the produce for exquisite meals. Alternatively, like us, choose one of the fabulous beachside hotels. The contemporary <a href="../../hotels/india/sri-lanka/negombo/heritance-negombo">Heritance Negombo</a> offers a resort style property right on the beach and within easy reach of the restaurants and bars.
&nbsp;

The next day we set out on our 4.5 hour journey to Habarana and our new base for exploring the Cultural Triangle. The drive isn&rsquo;t as scenic as other journeys so if you did decide to head straight there from your flight, it would be the perfect opportunity to catch up on some sleep or get to know your driver-guide!
The cultural triangle is renowned for its abundance of UNESCO World Heritage Sites but our plan for the day was less about cultural heritage and all about wildlife.&nbsp; After a fantastic lunch at the <a href="../../hotels/india/sri-lanka/cultural-triangle/jetwing-vil-uyana-sigiriya">Jetwing Vil Uyana</a> we took a 45 minute drive to visit Minneriya National Park for a three hour jeep safari, or at least that was the plan to start with.&nbsp; The big draw for visitors to the National Park is the elephants, and being wild they are free to roam between the neighbouring national parks as they please. Our guides were aware of this in advance and so we instead headed straight for Kaudulla National Park.&nbsp; After getting into our very comfortable open top 4x4 safari vehicles we set off into the park, eyes peeled and cameras at the ready.&nbsp;It wasn&rsquo;t long before we spotted a massive six foot long water monitor lizard and a whole host of different birds before we reached the open plains and lake where the elephants were grazing.&nbsp; When the weather turned the elephants headed for to the forest for shelter and we thought our time with them was done for the day, however on the drive home our driver-guide pulled into the verge and we got within about six feet of a large female who was walking along a large ditch just off the road.
A relaxing evening in the <a href="../../hotels/india/sri-lanka/cultural-triangle/cinnamon-lodge-habarana">Cinnamon Lodge</a> finished off the day in style where a dip in their beautiful pool was followed by an incredible dinner buffet with a separate chilled room for the vast array of desserts on offer for those with a sweet tooth.
TOP TIP: Consider adding some time to your stay in the Cultural Triangle to just relax and enjoy some of the hotels themselves. If you really love your nature and want a great place to spend an extra day or two then the <a href="../../hotels/india/sri-lanka/cultural-triangle/jetwing-vil-uyana-sigiriya">Jetwing Vil Uyana</a> has beautiful villas which are much in keeping with the natural surroundings that you can see all sorts of wildlife on site, from macaques and birds of prey, to their resident crocodile and fishing cat.&nbsp;&nbsp;
&nbsp;

This day was all about Sri Lanka&rsquo;s ancient treasures. We set off early in the morning for one of the highlights of the trip - climbing the magnificent Lion Rock! After a tour of the museum to get some context and learn about its fascinating history, we set off up the series of stone steps and metal staircases which take you to the top of this spectacular pillar of rock.&nbsp; Be warned that if you don&rsquo;t have a head for heights or are less mobile then this this is probably not for you, as there are sections where the walkways are narrow and there is a sheer drop. However, if that doesn&rsquo;t bother you then the views from the top are definitely worth the exertion.
We then had a chance to freshen up and enjoy a fantastic lunch with a spectacular view of Sigiriya from the <a href="../../hotels/india/sri-lanka/cultural-triangle/water-garden-sigiriya">Water Garden Sigiriya hotel</a>, yet another property which easily persuades you to stay an extra day to enjoy the experience.
From there it was off to see the vast ancient ruins of Polonnaruwa which was once the capital city and the thriving commercial and religious centre for the country.&nbsp; The park is full of different sites with huge ornately decorated buildings and temples, well preserved ruins and huge carvings of Lord Buddha carved in the rock at Gal Viharaya.
TOP TIP: If you want to climb Sigiriya then we would recommend starting early, wearing comfortable clothing and good quality runners or walking shoes.&nbsp; While you can bring your own water with you all bottles need to have the plastic labels removed so doing this in advance will save you time when you arrive at the site.&nbsp;&nbsp;
&nbsp;

On the drive from the Cultural Triangle to Kandy we visited another UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back to the 1st Century BC. The Dambulla cave temples are a complex of five separate caves all filled with statues and images of Buddha painted on the walls.&nbsp; The hike to the caves is short but steep and boasts great views over the surrounding countryside.&nbsp; After you finish seeing the caves you can go for a blessing from a Buddhist monk before heading back to your car for the drive on to Kandy.
We stopped for lunch in the <a href="../../hotels/india/sri-lanka/kandy/ozo-kandy">OZO Kandy</a> which has a great central location, funky d&eacute;cor and a great rooftop pool and bar which makes this an ideal base for those who wish to venture into the city in the evening.
From here we travelled on to our base for the night at the <a href="../../hotels/india/sri-lanka/kandy/cinnamon-citadel-kandy">Cinnamon Citadel</a>. This wonderfully peaceful hotel is on a hillside overlooking the Mahaweli River and is just 15 minutes from the centre of Kandy. But before we could try out the stylish river view bar we were off for one more spiritual experience visiting the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic.&nbsp; This is the most sacred temple in the whole of Sri Lanka and we joined the throngs of pilgrims. This is a wonderfully atmospheric experience with amazing scents from the offerings of flowers and incense as well as the resonating sounds of drums and gongs being played by those in ceremonial garb.
TOP TIP: Make sure to visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic at night to get the most atmospheric experience possible.
&nbsp;

One of the best things about Sri Lanka is the variety of different experiences for visitors of all ages packed into such a relatively compact area.&nbsp; Another of our most eagerly anticipated experiences was this mornings&rsquo; train ride from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya and it surpassed all our expectations.&nbsp; This train ride takes about 3.5 hours as it winds its way through tropical vegetation and then up into the hills with views of the tea plantations and several beautiful waterfalls. While we very lucky to have seats in the first class carriage we spent most of our time at the open doorways taking in as much of the view as possible and enjoying the freedom of having the wind in your hair while doing so.
Upon our arrival into Nuwara Eliya we visited the picturesque Amaya Langdale where we squeezed in some lawn tennis before heading to visit a working tea factory.&nbsp; Driving in this area is a pleasure as the valleys are filled with tea terraces and we took in a wonderful sunset overlooking these misty hills as we returned to the town that evening.
That evening we took in a walking tour of the town centre with its&rsquo; famous Victorian post office and the Holy Trinity Church and at times it seemed as though you were in a village in the English countryside &ndash; no wonder it is known as &lsquo;Little England&rsquo;!
Our base for the night was the <a href="../../hotels/india/sri-lanka/nuwara-eliya-and-tea-country/grand-hotel">Grand Hotel</a> which has real colonial charm, is walking distance from the town centre and has great facilities including a pool and a fantastic billiards room.
TOP TIP:&nbsp;Getting tickets for the train can be difficult, especially for the most sought after stretch between Nuwara Eliya and Ella in peak season, but with some flexibility it can be possible to do a different stretch as an alternative which will still be a great experience.
&nbsp;

If you are the kind of person who doesn&rsquo;t mind an early start for a beautiful hike then make sure to include this as part of your itinerary.&nbsp; Leaving early is preferable as the views from Worlds&rsquo; End are less obscured by the mists which build up over the day.&nbsp; It&rsquo;s not just about the view from here though as there&rsquo;s some great variety of scenery and wildlife along the walk as well as the impressive Baker&rsquo;s Falls.&nbsp; The walk requires decent footwear but is not overly challenging and most people will manage it in about two hours.&nbsp; After the hike we had a snack at our vehicles, got up close with some sambar deer and after a change of clothes back at the <a href="../../hotels/india/sri-lanka/nuwara-eliya-and-tea-country/grand-hotel">Grand Hotel</a> we set off on the three hour drive to Ella.
Ella has some wonderful properties to spend the night in and our group split between the fantastic <a href="../../hotels/india/sri-lanka/nuwara-eliya-and-tea-country/98-acres-resort-and-spa">98 Acres Resort &amp; Spa</a> and the boutique ex tea plantation house that is now <a href="../../hotels/india/sri-lanka/nuwara-eliya-and-tea-country/nine-skies">Nine Skies</a>.&nbsp; While these properties are very different both have superb views over the surrounding hills and this makes for a memorable final night in the highlands.
TOP TIP:&nbsp;Stay in Nine Skies if the idea of relaxing with a glass of red wine in front of the fireplace sounds like your thing.&nbsp; If you would rather get out to visit the local nightlife in Ella then 98 Acres is located closer to the centre of town.
&nbsp;

The drive from the mountains to the coast is long (six hours or so), but the views along the way are superb with plenty of great places you can pull in for photo opportunities. We passed through Bentota before visiting Kalutara and the <a href="../../hotels/india/sri-lanka/southwest-coast/anantara-kalutara-resort-kalutara">Anantara Kalutara Resort</a> before finally stopping for the final night of our trip at the stunning <a href="../../hotels/india/sri-lanka/southwest-coast/kumu-beach-balapitiya">Kumu Beach</a> in Balapitiya.&nbsp; Kumu Beach is part of the Teardrop Hotels group which specialise in luxury boutique properties throughout the country. The hotel was stunning with superb service but choosing your beach property carefully is something you should always discuss with your Travel Consultant. There are stunning properties and beaches all along this coastline and the roads are improving all the time so there are plenty of options.
At different times of the year different parts of the coastline are more suited to a beach break. Depending on this and your preferences for extra sightseeing during this time your consultant will be able to recommend which area and property will be the best fit for your perfect tailormade holiday.
TOP TIP: If you're planning on some time on the beach, then always choose your location carefully depending on when you are visiting. The golden beaches of Sri Lanka&rsquo;s southwest coast are driest from December to March, whilst the east coast boasts white sands and calm turquoise waters, and their best from March to September.

I know what you&rsquo;re thinking, somehow we&rsquo;ve muddled our countries, but no, there are some of the best croissants in the world in India! Pondicherry was a French colonial settlement on the south east coast of India until the mid 50s and is still very much influenced by this. The French Quarter has everything from a fromagerie to a French cinema, permeated with the smell of buttery pastries wafting through the streets. The trick is to add whole spices at the beginning so they have time to cook and release their flavours, but add the ground spices at the end to ensure they keep theirs!

Beyond the Bhaji – India’s Lesser Known Culinary Highlights

When looking at tours of <a href="../../holidays/asia/indian-subcontinent/india">India</a>, Jaipur is definitely top of my list of recommendations. Walking through Jaipur&rsquo;s crowded markets is akin to sensory overload but those in the know head for Jaipur&rsquo;s jewellery workshops as Jaipur is the Gemstone Capital of India. Over 30,000 skilled metalsmiths work all over Jaipur, fitting glittering gems into works of art. However, Varanasi comes to life during the monsoon from July to September. Water levels on the Ganges are at their highest and therefore boat trips are incredible. It takes some planning to travel during the monsoon but is very rewarding.&nbsp;

As the British escaped to the highlands in summer, there are many colonial era buildings to visit in the hill stations of Shimla and Darjeeling. The Golden Temple of Amritsar is the most important pilgrimage spot for Sikhs who bathe in the holy waters and the Dalai Lama has his home in Dharamsala.
The Indian foothills can be visited all year around. From October to April nights are extremely cold and from December to February the daytime temperatures also drop considerably. Expect hot water bottles and electric blankets! However, the mountain views at this time are spectacularly clear. The most popular time to visit the foothills of the Himalayas is March to June, and September to November. At this time other parts of India can be incredibly hot making this area a great choice. When is the Best Time to Visit India

Most travellers will arrive through <a href="../../holidays/asia/indian-subcontinent/pakistan">Pakistan&rsquo;s</a> modern capital before striking out further afield. It would be easy to write off the city as a gateway to better and bigger things, but linger longer in Islamabad and it makes a perfect base for exploring the surrounding area. Islamabad is often ranked as the second most beautiful capital city in the world, surrounded as it is by forests, hills and the leopard-hosting Margalla Hills National Park.
Journey outside Islamabad to Taxila, the UNESCO World Heritage listed ruins displaying the evolution of Persian, Greek and Buddhist influences in the region. With history dating back to 1000 BC, it has seen the rise, fall and destruction of more empires to count, and can easily take up a day of your trip exploring the expansive complex. Take a guidebook, because as impressive as the ruins are, information on site is hard to come by for tourists.
Another short drive from Islamabad allows visitors to explore ancient villages just outside the city displaying evidence of the Hindu religion, more prominent in the area before the partition of India, a defining moment in the history of South Asia. If time allows a visit to Faisal Mosque will impress visitors with the sheer size of the construction. This was the largest mosque in the world when built in 1986, and with a capacity for 10,000 worshippers, remains the largest in South Asia, dominating Islamabad&rsquo;s landscape with its imposing position in the Margalla Hills.
After this fantastic introduction to Pakistan and its incredibly friendly people, board a short flight to Hunza in the north, and a different world entirely.

Gilgit is your gateway to Hunza, and the ensuing drive north to Gulmit will thread through some of the most enchanting scenery of mountains and glaciers you will ever witness. This magical setting in Northern Pakistan is where the legendary Himalaya, Karakorum and Hindu Kush mountain ranges meet; a juncture also historically strategically important to protect the passes through the mountains. Sitting alongside the famous Karakorum Highway, a five hour drive north would find you crossing the Chinese border at the highest paved border crossing in the world. A hike to Ondra Fort will not only demonstrate this strategic setting but also reward you with panoramic views of the peaks and valleys the area is famous for.
The main draw of the area is a photo stop at Nanga Parbat, the ninth highest mountain in the world and notorious as the &ldquo;killer mountain&rdquo;. Despite numerous attempts, the mountain has never been summited in winter. For moderate hikers, there are numerous trekking routes in the area exploring high passes, quaint villages, glaciers and the infamous Hussaini Hanging Bridge, labelled the most dangerous bridge in the world. There will also be time to enjoy local tea and apricot cake, and explore local markets.

If you are curious as to how long this region has been hosting tourism, you only have to consider the isolated outpost of Shimshal. The precipitous white-knuckle road to this remote town took 18 years to build and opened in only 2003. Those that can travel this far afield by 4WD will be rewarded by a destination few can say they have visited.
Spend a day soaking up the culture of the local mountain people and acclimatising to the significant altitude. These are hardy and hard-working people, as friendly as any in Pakistan. They often draw comparisons with Nepal&rsquo;s Sherpas, and with a rich mountaineering heritage, there are many options for multi-day hikes in the area. However, with no cars, few motorbikes, even less tourists, crisp mountain air and the deafening silence of the mountains, this is a perfect place to kick back and relax with a tea and a book.

An interesting detour on the way to the Hunza capital of Karimibad, Lake Attabad was surprisingly only formed in 2010 when a landslide blocked the Hunza River, flooding five villages (including Shimshal and Gulmit). This forced a $275 million realignment of 12 miles of the Karakorum Highway, and displaced 6,000 people from the region. Despite the devastation, the resultant shimmering blue lake is now home to boating, jet-skiing and fishing, and the incredible mountainous backdrop makes this photogenic lake one of the best stops in the region. If you have a little more time to spare, a trip to the ancient Silk Road settlement of Ganish is rewarding, as is a side trip to the massive Hopar Valley and Glacier.

Arriving in the capital of the region, Karimaban and its surrounding towns controlled the crucial trade routes of Asia for hundreds of years. Mountains still tower over you with world-class views in what is one of the premier tourist destinations in Pakistan. Climbing to the 700-year-old Baltit Fort demonstrates its powerful position and rewards the traveller with breath-taking views across the passes and peaks around Karimibad. This is truly one of the most photogenic spots in the whole country, being labelled by some as Pakistan&rsquo;s very own Shangri-La. Nearby Altit Fort is even older at 1100 years, both having been painfully restored, Altit only opening to visitors in 2007.
Once the history is satisfied, Karimabad is home to a laidback vibe and an array of local cafes, and it is well worth a walk around the village streets and markets. If you have been craving a western-style coffee, Caf&eacute;-de-Hunza will give you an indulgent fix, and for those who have not had enough hiking quite yet, a day hike to Ultar Base Camp will give you great views of the Ultar peaks and glacier. Give yourself the chance to soak up the last of the mountain scenery before travelling back to Gilgit for your flight back to Islamabad.

The road is long from Islamabad to Lahore. This route is the Grand Trunk road, one of Asia&rsquo;s most ancient routes; over 2,500 years old and stretching 2,700 miles from Bangladesh, through Afghanistan, India and Pakistan. You will experience a relatively small section, thankfully peppered with stops along the way, most notably Rhotas Fort, one of the largest and most imposing forts in all Central and South Asia and a superb example of Muslim military architecture.
Lahore has existed for at least 1,000 years - probably longer. As such travellers are treated to an exceptionally rich experience of museums, tombs, gardens, palaces, forts and shrines to rival the cities of the golden triangle across the nearby frontier in Northern India. An afternoon witnessing the Wagah border closing ceremony also allows a look at the modern position between these two belligerent neighbours, as border guards face off with elaborate pomp and ceremony during the flag lowering.
Lahore will overwhelm a visitor with places to see, weaving intricate layers of history through its ever-changing rule of empires; Shahis, Sultanates Ghurids, Ghaznavids, Mughals and recently the British have all ruled the city in its millennium of existence. Top of the list is a visit to the Walled City, of which the convoluted and picturesque medieval streets largely remain intact and host a diverse array of mosques, Hindu shrines and the UNESCO World Heritage listed Lahore Fort, all testament to the cities past. If the walking and history works up a big enough hunger, Food Street on Fort Road specialises in mouth-watering Lahori cuisine and great views, surrounded by music establishments and hundreds of years of culture. For those out for some shopping, the markets of the Walled City can offer a stroll through grain, cloth and spice markets, some of which are the largest in Asia.
A trip is not complete without a visit to Shalimar Gardens, a complex of ponds, waterfalls and pavilions built in the 17th century. If time allows, the Tomb of Jahangir, the Lahore Museum and Lawrence Gardens will give you the full picture of this magical, fascinating and up-and-coming city, bringing your first trip to Pakistan to an end.

Home to over one billion people, India's cities are landscapes of their own. This is my account of arriving early morning into West Bengal's capital, <a href="../../holidays/asia/indian-subcontinent/india/calcutta-and-north-east-india">Kolkata</a>.
Vintage yellow cabbies line the airport terminals, welcoming you to join the migration of those emerging from the sprawling delta regions. A half hour drive will take you past progressions of farmers carrying chickens on both sides of their mopeds, alongside those balancing cauldrons of fresh milk en route to serve the awakening city with their morning chai. This tea habit can be enjoyed by stopping at a roadside stall, locally known as a dhaba. Each chai cup "bhar" is handmade using mud from the Ganges; remnants of these cups can be found all over, waiting to be swept up and dumped back in the river for one of natures own recycling projects. Have this chai along with a morning snack such as kachori or some pakoras.
Edging closer to the city, cars meander through the hectic streets, with the bright taxis bringing flashes of yellow to many forgotten colonial buildings. Spend your days visiting museums filled with antiques including Mughal paintings, or at the Victoria memorial which reflects on times of the British Raj, and then retreat to the wild botanical garden, home to the Great Banyan Tree.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;
Come evening, the city's mosques and other holy sites become social hubs. Harmoniums and tablas accompany singers in filling shrines with songs of love and loss. Sit with locals below clouds of pipe smoke, bringing your busy day to a hazy end.

Upon reaching the top you'll want to find the best spot to see the Himalayas. For a breathtaking view, head to Tiger Hill, a UNESCO world heritage site with panoramic views of both Everest and Kangchenjunga. Get here early to see the sunrise cover the Himilayas with a golden glow.
Dense clouds can mask these sights in monsoon months, but life in this blanket of persistent cloud is itself a unique experience. This is especially the case when exploring Mahakal, a Hindu temple drenched with prayer flags and prayer wheels. Macaque monkeys emerge from tall oak and coniferous larch trees that surround this holy site; the white cloud backdrop providing a truly mystical viewing.

From April to September the east coast beaches of Sri Lanka enjoy plenty of sunshine and minimal rainfall so this is the place to head for as the beaches around Trincomalee and Passekuhdah are perfect for relaxing after touring the island. If pure relaxation isn't your (or more likely your children's) thing, there are various excursions to keep you entertained including snorkelling or visiting the historic sights and temples of Trincomalee.

Sri Lanka's most popular season for visitors are the months of December to March and this is an ideal time to visit the south west coast. For families with younger children who aren't limited to school holidays this is the perfect time to visit. If you don't fancy touring you can still enjoy a huge variety of experiences by basing yourself in a beach resort and taking day trips. For example, the iconic stilt fishermen of Weligama are just a short drive from most of the south west beaches.
The southern city of Galle is also a dream of a day trip, boasting an old city within a fort, crumbling Dutch colonial buildings, boutique cafes, shops, art galleries and plenty of restaurants. Strolling around the UNESCO World Heritage listed old town and the old fort walls will give you endless photo opportunities. You may even catch an impromptu cricket game being played either in an open square or in the cricket ground (major games are also played here, but it is advisable to arrange tickets in advance). Children will love the National Maritime Museum and it's also a good place to escape the midday sun. It is easy to combine a day trip to Galle with a visit to a <a href="https://www.trailfinders.com/tours/india-the-himalayas-and-sri-lanka/sri-lanka/tour-galle-fort-and-turtle-hatchery">turtle hatchery</a>.&nbsp;
If wildlife is your thing then whale watching trips leave from the south west coast. It is also possible to take a day trip to <a href="https://www.trailfinders.com/tours/india-the-himalayas-and-sri-lanka/sri-lanka/tour-udawalawe-national-park-experience">Udawalawe</a> which is one of the best national parks in Sri Lanka for seeing elephants.&nbsp;

Sri Lanka offers a diverse array of wildlife which will impress children and adults alike. One of the best (and most family friendly) things about wildlife experiences here is that they are easily accessible and eminently affordable.
Elephants are the big draw and seeing them in the wild is an amazing experience, no matter what your age. Sri Lanka offers plenty of opportunities to see them, the easiest being an afternoon jeep safari in Minneriya National Park, just a short drive from your Cultural Triangle hotel yet it feels like another world. We were surrounded by elephants and spent a couple of hours watching them wander down to the lake for a drink, taking endless photos of the babies. It can be a long day regardless, but does offer the convenience of not changing hotels, along with the flexibility for one adult to take older children as it isn't suitable for under 6's).&nbsp;
For families with older children <a href="../../holidays/asia/indian-subcontinent/sri-lanka/yala-national-park">Yala National Park</a> is the ultimate Sri Lanka wildlife destination. Here, as well as elephants, you have the chance to spot leopard (the park has one of the highest densities in the world) as well as jackals, sloth bears and crocodiles.&nbsp;
Monkeys are also very common in Sri Lanka and kids will love watching their antics. Exploring the ruins of the old capital of Polonnaruwa while watching the moneys forage for their first meal of the day while a naturalist tells you about their behaviour makes for a magical morning.

Sri Lanka has culture in abundance. It's not just in the <a href="../../holidays/asia/indian-subcontinent/sri-lanka/cultural-triangle">Cultural Triangle</a> but it's an obvious place to start. Running around the ruins of Polonnaruwa can burn off the kid's energy while you take in the ancient city. Visiting a traditional Sri Lankan village is also a great way for children to learn about a different culture and lifestyle.&nbsp;
The Temple of the Tooth in Kandy has a lively atmosphere with plenty of bright colours to catch the attention of children, you can also take in a traditional dance show here.&nbsp;
The tea plantations of the hill country don't just offer spectacular views, there is also the opportunity to try your hand at tea picking or visit a tea factory to learn how the tea gets from bush to cup.

India - Head for the Hills

Located on the Northwest coast of the isle, Wilpattu National Park is <a href="../../holidays/asia/indian-subcontinent/sri-lanka">Sri Lanka's</a> largest and probably least discovered national park.&nbsp;Receiving santuary status in 1905 followed by national park status in 1938, Wilpattu is a hub of activity for animal and plant life!
This dry zone jungle is dotted with many villus or natural lakes, predomintantly comprised of rainwater, making it a perfect location and a great place to see resident and migratory water-birds.&nbsp;Species such as the pin tail, spoonbill, whistling teal and garganey can be found here and you'll often find the endemic Sri Lanka jungle fowl scurrying about!&nbsp;
Wilpattu National Park's swathes of dense dry woodland support an array of other wildlife including crocodiles, elephants, sloth bears, spotted deer and water buffalo&nbsp;as well as Sri Lanka's barking deer and the famous, elusive leopard.
Visit from March to October, when the water tables are lower and the animals come out to drink at the exposed lakes.&nbsp;

Situated on the lusher south-west of the island and in contrast to Sri Lanka's other wildlife hotspots is the Sinharaja Rainforest, the last viable remant of Sri Lanka's tropical lowland rainforest.
This UNESCO World Heritage site boasts many unique species&nbsp;making it one of the best biodiversity hotspots in Sri Lanka.&nbsp;The reserve is home to 95 percent of the endemic birds in Sri Lanka such as the green-billed coucal, red-faced malkoha and the Sri Lankan blue magpie - a birders paradise!&nbsp;Eight out of the twelve endemic mammal species of the country can also be found here. Including the giant squirrel, badger mongoose, purple-faced leaf monkey and torque macaque.
The drier months, and therefore better time to travel to this captivating forest, are between January and April and August to September. You'll have a better chance of spotting migratory birds from December to April.&nbsp;

Established in 1972, the national park is renowned as one of the best places in Sri Lanka to see Asiatic elephants. The likelihood of spotting them on safari is almost guaranteed.&nbsp;Encompassed within the park is the Walawe Reservoir, a favourite hangout for the almost 400 elephants that live here during the drier months. You'll find herds arriving to drink, bathe and play in the water so it's an ideal place to snap some pictures! The park is also home to many water buffalo, monitor lizards, sambar deer and monkeys. The park is an exciting location for bird enthusiasts, playing home to the interestingly&nbsp;named raptors such as the changeable hawk eagle, serpent eagle and grey-headed fish eagle.
A visit during October through to April is the best time to spot these majestic giants.

One thing for certain is its abundance of wildlife!&nbsp;Granted national park status in 1938, Yala boasts one of the world&rsquo;s densest populations of leopard, giving visitors the chance to see these elusive cats in the wild.&nbsp;As well as these big cats, you'll be able to spot elephants, sloth bears, sambars, golden jackals, spotted deer, wild pigs, peacocks and crocodiles to name a few!&nbsp;If that still isn't enough, the combination of scrub and woodland areas along with freshwater and marine pockets ensures a high diversity of birds with over 220 different species.
The best time to visit the park is in the drier season between February and July, when water levels are low, drawing the aminals out into the open. In June and July, during the fruiting of the palu trees, sloth bears can also be spotted more frequently!
Please note, the Park is closed from September to mid October every year.

Sri Lanka Safari

Any classic <a href="../../tours/india-the-himalayas-and-sri-lanka/india/tour-india-s-golden-triangle">Golden Triangle tour</a> is likely to start and finish in Delhi, the great capital metropolis of incredible India and a truly amazing place to begin your adventure.

There is much more to Delhi than just mosques and mausoleums, however, and I totally recommend a visit to the crazy, crowded bazaars of Chandni Chowk. It is an exciting place to take in and one to embrace and enjoy. The bright colours of the textiles, the glittering jewellery, little tea stalls, the scent of spice in the air and all around the throng of people, it seems never-ending and initially confusing but if you relax into the rhythm and let it all flow past you somehow it works, somehow it all makes sense. It is a wonderful introduction to how the people navigate every day life in this wonderful country.

Unique and legendary as the Taj is, it's certainly not the only attraction in Agra. Top of the list is the imposing Agra Fort. One of the finest forts in all India it was the centre of Mughal power for several generations and is a wonderland of courtly and private apartments, courtyards, rooms and terraces.&nbsp;Often known as the Jewel Box or even the Baby Taj the splendid I'timad ud Daulah is another highlight of Agra and of Mughal architecture, do include it on a longer itinerary if taking a couple of days in Agra.

Wandering through colourful backstreet bazaars with your expert guide, in addition to the usual parathas, aloo and kebabs there will be filling biryanis and sumptuous mughal dishes. Jaipur, fondly known as the Pink City due to the hue of the local sandstones used to construct much of the city, is the third point of the Golden Triangle and can easily hold its own against Agra and Delhi. With a wealth of sites, a genuine craft and artisan culture, hotels both heritage and modern and, of course, delicious cuisine Jaipur, is vital and interesting.&nbsp;
Simply unmissable is the Amber Fort located high on Amer Hill outside the city. The vast complex is both fortress and palace. Very imposing and full of beautiful features, the usa of sandstone and marble create an appealing harmony. Follow it up with a visit to the fascinating Jantar Mantar, or Royal Observatory, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The City Palace is another lovely warren of courtyards and gardens and nearby is the iconic facade of the Hawa Mahal the 'Palace of Winds'
Once you've experienced Jaipur's delights to the full from the ground, why not head to the sky on our <a href="../../tours/india-the-himalayas-and-sri-lanka/india/tour-sunrise-hot-air-balloon-over-jaipur">Sunrise Hot Air Balloon</a> ride. Gain a different perspective as you drift slowly over the historical forts and hidden palaces nestled amongst the countryside which surrounds the city. If you have more time and want to really immerse yourself in India then the cities of the Golden Triangle can easily combine with further exploration of <a href="../../holidays/asia/indian-subcontinent/india/rajasthan-and-north-india">Rajasthan</a>, or fascinating destinations in further flung parts of India.&nbsp;
The famous and wildlife rich Ranthambore National Park is easily accessed from either Agra or Jaipur so makes a wonderful addition to any Golden triangle tour. Of course there are many other National Parks in India but Ranthambore is my personal favourite for the beautiful landscapes, the remains of Mughal pavilions dotted here and there and the high chance of <a href="../../holidays/asia/indian-subcontinent/india/tiger-reserves-and-wildlife-sanctuaries-of-india">tiger spotting</a>.
Jaipur, on the southern tip of the triangle, is a great jumping off point for the lesser visited Rajput cities such as Jaisalmer, deep into the desert, and well-preserved Jodhpur. It also connects well with the impossibly romantic lakeside city of Udaipur.&nbsp;&nbsp;
From Delhi you can take the toy train up to the renowned hill station at <a href="../../tours/india-the-himalayas-and-sri-lanka/india/tour-shimla-extension">Shimla</a>, a journey toward the majestic Himalaya and a few days steeped in breathtaking views. Another idea and a great pre-tour addition to the Golden Triangle could be to fly from Delhi to <a href="../../tours/india-the-himalayas-and-sri-lanka/india/tour-varanasi-extension">Varanasi</a>, the powerfully spiritual centre of Hindu rites on the banks of the mighty Ganges River. From Varanasi there are direct flights to Agra where you pick up the Golden Triangle again.
For first time visitors the Golden Triangle never fails to deliver. I have done it half a dozen times or more and every time it still leaves me wanting to go back again!
