Usually, the colours start in the northern New England states (Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire) in late September, and move through to the southern states (Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island) by mid October when the colours rapidly fade.

Highlights: The White Mountains of New Hampshire, Vermont’s Green Mountains and Maine’s Acadia National Park are must-see spots. The pretty small towns, rolling hills and peaceful lakes provide the perfect picturesque backdrop for the vibrant foliage.

Known for its graceful Sakura (cherry blossom) in the spring, Japan is equally as stunning in the autumn. The ancient temples and shrines, framed by fiery-red maple trees, create a peaceful and almost dreamlike experience. 

Best time to visit: Mid-November to early December. 

Highlights: Kyoto is magical in the autumn; visit Kiyomizu-dera Temple and the Philosopher’s Path, where the contrast of crimson leaves against traditional Japanese architecture is awe-inspiring.
