Autumn, with its magnificent array of golds, reds, yellows and oranges, is a season that enchants the senses. As summer fades and autumn creeps in, certain regions across the world come alive with the spectacle of vibrant foliage.

If you’re looking to experience the most breathtaking fall scenery in the world, read on for our guide to the best places to see the autumn colours.

New England, USA

When it comes to autumn colours, New England is often at the top of the list, and rightly so! The northeastern states of Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island, offer some of the most stunning fall foliage in the world.

Best time to visit: Mid-September until mid-October, although forecasting peak fall foliage is not an exact science as the changes are triggered by air temperature. Usually, the colours start in the northern New England states (Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire) in late September, and move through to the southern states (Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island) by mid October when the colours rapidly fade.

Highlights: The White Mountains of New Hampshire, Vermont’s Green Mountains and Maine’s Acadia National Park are must-see spots. The pretty small towns, rolling hills and peaceful lakes provide the perfect picturesque backdrop for the vibrant foliage.

Known for its graceful Sakura (cherry blossom) in the spring, Japan is equally as stunning in the autumn. The ancient temples and shrines, framed by fiery-red maple trees, create a peaceful and almost dreamlike experience.

Best time to visit: Mid-November to early December.

Highlights: Kyoto is magical in the autumn; visit Kiyomizu-dera Temple and the Philosopher’s Path, where the contrast of crimson leaves against traditional Japanese architecture is awe-inspiring. The gardens of Tofuku-ji Temple and the famous Arashiyama Bamboo Grove also offer unforgettable views. Japan's mountainous regions of Kiso Valley, Takayama and Matsumoto are also awash with colour at this time of the year.
