With so many attractions it’s hard to narrow it down to the five best things to do in Florida, but I’ll do my best…
1. Orlando Parks
The theme parks are widely considered to be one of the best things to do in Florida. We are all familiar with the two giants when it comes to entertainment for the whole family in Orlando; Universal Orlando Resort and Walt Disney World Resort have it all. Be dazzled by world-class entertainment and savour delectable dining at award-winning restaurants.
One true hidden gem is Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex at Cape Canaveral. Plan right and get the chance to see a live rocket launch (yes, they have launch pads in use) speak to a real astronaut and come face to face with the mighty Saturn V rocket, the type that took Neil Armstrong to the Moon. There are thousands of experiences to be had which are guaranteed to make a lasting impression and who knows, maybe inspire the little ones for a future career path; it wouldn’t be the first time it’s happened!
2. Florida Keys
Just a short drive away from Miami, the Florida Keys are a string of tropical islands connected by road bridges, stretching about 120 miles to Key West, which is the southernmost point in the contiguous United States. Key West is actually closer to Havana, Cuba than to Miami. The drive along the Florida Keys is a great experience in itself, where you can stop along the multitude of islands to do fishing, boating, snorkelling and scuba diving. I thoroughly enjoyed driving a convertible Mustang along the seemingly endless roads while taking in the views of the turquoise waters.
Once in Key West, spend time exploring the charming town known for its pastel hued coloured buildings, high end art galleries and hip bars. Perhaps visit the Hemingway Home and Museum or the winter White House for President Harry S. Truman.
3. Miami
When it comes to unmatched vibes, intricate Art Deco architecture and unparalleled nightlife, Miami has no competition. This vibrant city serves as a destination in its own right, due to its diversity of pastime activities on offer. Discover the fascinating Art Deco District and learn more about the architecture style that gave it its name and distinct charm. Head to South Beach and lose yourself among the numerous bars and restaurants lining Ocean Drive.
Being a unique melting pot of cuisine and cultures, Miami offers some of the best Cuban inspired restaurants and cafés. If street art is something that spikes your interest, paying a visit to Wynwood Arts District is well worth your time, as it boasts more than 50 murals painted by renowned artists around the world.
4. Gulf Coast Beaches
Believe it or not, the image below is not from a secluded Caribbean Island paradise, but rather in Captiva Island, one of the many beaches and islands just off the mainland and Fort Meyers which are hugging the Gulf of Mexico. Most are easily accessible by car and with abundant accommodation options never too far, it makes for an ideal addition to any fly drive holiday.
The Gulf Coast beaches span 770 miles, from Pensacola on the western edge, to Naples and Marco Island at the edge of the Everglades. It is worth noting that some Gulf Coast beaches are part of various nature preserves, but tourists can enjoy most of them, whether driving along the coast or stopping to enjoy the views and sunshine.
5. Tampa & Busch Gardens
Tampa is known for being a great city for all ages and tastes, offering places to stay that fit any budget and catering to everyone, including families, outdoor adventure seekers, and foodies. Ybor City, once the cigar capital of the world, is a vibrant neighbourhood in Tampa that boasts an exciting nightlife and delicious food. As the sun sets, the area transforms into a lively entertainment district where you can drink at local breweries, dance the night away, or catch some live music.
For a fun day out with the family, Busch Gardens is the ideal place to find adrenaline inducing rides, experience animal encounters or enjoy one of the many tours on offer.
