5. Stay in an authentic Ryokan

An overnight stay in a ryokan (a traditional inn) is a highlight of any visit to Japan. Some are small, historic properties whilst others resemble a typical modern hotel from the outside. Inside, all offer rooms with tatami mat floors, paper screen doors and futon mattresses that are laid out at night. Most ryokan feature an onsen (hot spring bath). These may be indoor or outdoor, usually communal and single sex, although sometimes private onsen are available. Elaborate kaiseki (multi-course) meals are typically served in your room, though many ryokan now offer communal dining rooms. An overnight stay in a ryokan is undoubtedly one of the best things to do in Japan.
