Kayaking under the Midnight Sun

With many stunning inlets and beautiful turquoise waters, the Lofoten Islands is a kayaker’s paradise. Join a local tour with an experienced guide and explore the incredible landscape by water. For a truly incredible experience, plan your kayaking adventure when the Midnight Sun is shining (May – Mid July) a magical golden glow across the sky all night long.

Hiking for the perfect viewpoint

There is plenty of choice when it comes to hiking in the Lofoten Islands. Whether you are tempted by a towering peak on a guided tour, or after a gentler trail through the lowlands, you will find an option suitable for you. The Lofoten Islands most popular trails of Djevelporten and Fløya in Svolvaer and Reinebringen in Reine have Sherpa stairs and ladders and while they are challenging, offer iconic views of this breathtaking landscape.

Golf with a twist

Perhaps one of the most picturesque golf courses, on the island of Gimsøya surrounded by incredible fjords and mountains, playing golf here is certain to be a memorable experience. While you play it is possible to spot white-tailed eagles along the cliffs and you can even play during the spectacular Midnight Sun. This 18-hole course is recognised across the world for its beauty and its quality.

Explore the picturesque white sandy beaches

Azure waters and soft white sandy beaches, you may think you are in the Mediterranean! There are some idyllic beaches to explore, including Haukland and Uttakleiv beach, which both can be reached by walking along the old coastal road or by taking the mountain pass for a more challenging adventure. Incredible horse riding is possible along Hov beach, close by to the famous 18 hole golf course or perhaps opt to take a refreshing dip in the glassy waters.

Seek out the local wildlife

From seals and otters playing along the coastline to birds of prey soaring across the sky to elks and stoats. There is some great wildlife spotting to be had, especially for its birdlife where you will find a number of species including the white-tailed eagle which is best spotted on a safari boat tour. For those planning to do more birdwatching it is worth visiting the wetlands around the town of Leknes and Gimsøya.

Sample Stockfish

Fishing is a main part of the local livelihood, and you can expect exquisite choice of fresh fish accompanied by locally sourced produce for a delicious meal. Stockfish, dried cod, is one of the Lofoten Islands most well known exports and played an important role in the country’s history. Sample this delicious local delicacy during your stay and perhaps pay a visit to the Stockfish Museum in the village of Å to learn more.

Drive the National Scenic Route

There are 18 drives across Norway which feature the most beautiful driving experiences the country has to offer; these are called the National Scenic Routes and by no surprise one of these incredible journeys is in the Lofoten Islands. Expect wonderful viewpoints to stop and enjoy the scenery and picnic facilities while also passing picturesque villages and dramatic mountains. Begin the spectacular 197 km route in Moskenes and finish in Vågan or switch the direction.
