In this series, we share recent experiences had by Trailfinders staff on their personal holidays. Whether it’s a unique place to stay or an interesting region to visit, you’ll get inspiration from those who have been.

This edition sees Hugh Surtees, Senior Marketing Executive, discuss his recent holiday in beautiful Bora Bora.

Where?

Located in the heart of the South Pacific, French Polynesia is an exquisite destination, as remote as it is desirable. Long synonymous with paradise, the pearl in the crown of this exotic wonderland is breathtaking Bora Bora. This enchanting island is dominated by the majestic silhouette of Mt. Otemanu, surrounded by an iridescent turquoise lagoon.

Arriving is an experience in itself, as the dazzling vista emerges in front of the plane windows towards the end of the short flight from Tahiti. Once landed, a short stroll through the tiny airport will bring you to a row of speedboats ready and waiting to whisk you off to your resort in style!

Why Go?

Working in travel I have been fortunate enough to visit a number of the world’s most picturesque destinations but the moment I arrived in Bora Bora it was immediately apparent I was somewhere truly special. The overwater bungalow was actually created in French Polynesia in the 1960’s and it is something they have gone on to perfect, boasting high end resorts with endlessly stylish accommodation that blends seamlessly into some of the most stirring scenery it is possible to imagine.

On top of this, the great intangible that sets this nation apart is the warmth of their welcome. Whilst some may be familiar with the music and dance that epitomises Polynesian culture, it is important to stress that this generosity of spirit isn’t simply a commodified performance for tourists but a genuine way of life.  Rich and proud traditions are on full display throughout the island and getting to share in this, truly elevates the experience.

Highlight

Whilst there is plenty to enjoy on land, an endless array of further delights await when you take to the ocean. The warm and welcoming lagoon waters that lap at the resort shores are inviting enough as it is, but a boat trip is the perfect way to make the most of this location. World-class scuba diving opportunities await any keen divers, however there is plenty to enjoy from simply snorkelling.

Enchanting marine life exists in abundance with turtles, rays, dolphins and blacktip reef sharks to name but a few. Spending an afternoon swimming amongst the most kaleidoscopic coral I had ever laid eyes on had already stretched my boundaries of reality but emerging back on to the boat to witness a perfectly formed rainbow framed against a small, palm fringed island truly made it feel like I was living in a dream.

Top Tip

Considering your position in relation to the scenery can make a big difference to your stay. For starters, sitting on the left side of the plane allows for the best views of the island as you come into land. Moreover, when booking your accommodation, upgrading to a villa with views over the verdant and imposing Mt. Otemanu is definitely worth it. I stayed at the gorgeous Le Bora Bora by Pearl Resorts and if there is a better way to wind down a day than sitting on one of their overwater bungalow verandas, watching wispy white clouds float past its imposing peak as the light grows dim, I have yet to find it.
