Itinerary
Day 1 Madrid to Cuenca
On arrival into Madrid pick up your car and head east into the region of Castilla-La Mancha, to the fascinating town of Cuenca and your first stop, the incredible Parador de Cuenca. This converted monastery offers breathtaking views and is filled with period artwork and delightful historic features.
Day 2 Cuenca to Toledo
Wake up and marvel at the spectacular views across Huecar Gorge towards the city. Enjoy breakfast in the chapel before wandering across the bridge to the medieval old town. With little space to expand over the centuries, the medieval town is crammed onto the clifftop, with some houses built hanging over the cliff edge. These ‘hanging houses’ now contain contemporary art galleries and are a visitor's highlight. This afternoon drive on to your next stop, the Parador de Toledo.
Day 3 Toledo
Today you have a full day to explore the enthralling sights of this ancient hilltop city, well known for its many Moorish and Jewish monuments. Start at the fortresslike city gates, standing since the 14th Century, before wandering the winding streets and alleyways to visit tranquil courtyards and imposing churches. In the afternoon, head back to the Parador to relax in the gardens or beside the pool.
Day 4 Toledo to Ávila
This morning you’ll drive to the town of Avila. The towering city walls are some of the best preserved in Europe and you can still walk atop sections of them. Your Parador hotel this evening has been converted from the Piedras Albas Palace.
Day 5 Ávila to Segovia
Enjoy a morning exploring the sights of Avila before heading on to your next stop. Arriving into Segovia you’ll instantly recognise the city’s Roman roots, with the towering aqueduct passing straight through the city. The Parador de Segovia is more modern and offers lovely views of the city from the gardens and pool.
Day 6 Segovia
Start your visit to the city by taking a walk around the 1st Century Roman aqueduct to marvel at this architectural masterpiece. Be sure to pay a visit to the Alcazar, an 11th Century fortified palace, set overlooking the river and said to be the inspiration for Disney’s famous castle.
Day 7 Segovia to Madrid
Depart early on your final morning and drive to the Royal Seat of San Lorenzo del Escorial, the historic residence of the Spanish king. Explore these spectacular Renaissance buildings and the elegant gardens before making your way back to Madrid airport for your onward flight.
Additional Options: With a few extra days why not add a stop in the vibrant city of Salamanca? Home to exquisite architecture, spend a day exploring its wonderous sights, from the ornate cathedral and Gallo Tower to the iconic university, the first built in Spain. Spend an evening at the Plaza Mayor; the city’s stunning central square is illuminated by night making it a bustling hub of nightlife.
