Itinerary
Day 1 Catania to Taormina
Arrive into Catania on the idyllic island of Sicily. Take a private transfer to Taormina, nestled in the foothills of Mount Etna. An ancient treasure-trove of history and culture, Taormina dates back to the 4th Century BC and was a key stop on the Grand Tour of Europe from the 17th Century.
Day 2 Taormina
Enjoy a day exploring Taormina. Begin with a stroll along the bustling main street, Corso Umberto, which winds through the town’s historical heart. Admire Palazzo Corvajo’s striking architecture and explore the cobbled side alleys and grand piazzas, brimming with boutiques, cafés and restaurants. A visit to Taormina’s ancient Greco-Roman amphitheatre is an absolute must, featuring a fascinating history and a spectacular backdrop of the Ionian Sea.
Day 3 Taormina
Perhaps set aside a day to explore nearby Mount Etna, which dominates the landscape. At 3,329m it’s Italy’s highest mountain south of the Alps, as well as the largest active volcano in Europe. If you have time, the Alcantara Gorges are also well worth a visit. A geological marvel, these magnificent canyons are thought to have been created by Mount Etna’s historic lava flows.
Day 4 Taormina to Vulcano
Today take a road and ferry transfer to Vulcano, one of seven islands that make up the Aeolian Islands. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and this afternoon indulge in some well-earned relaxation beside the pool.
Days 5-7 Vulcano
Spend the next three days exploring Vulcano. If you’re feeling adventurous, perhaps hike the island’s formidable volcano. It’s worth the climb for the magnificent views into the crater and across the Aeolian archipelago. Afterwards, why not soothe your muscles in one of the island’s numerous therapeutic mud baths, before indulging in delicious Italian cuisine in bustling Porto di Levante. Later, visit the island’s picturesque black sand beach at Porto di Ponente or perhaps venture further afield to explore the other Aeolian Islands via water taxi or ferry.
Day 8 Vulcano to Catania
This morning bid farewell to Vulcano before boarding your ferry to Sicily and transferring back to Catania airport for your onward flight.
