Travelling from Luang Prabang to Vientiane you will pass through varied landscapes, from gentle hills and rolling farmland to mountainous peaks. This diverse region is home to the mysterious Plain of Jars and the mountainous landscapes of Vang Vieng, and is well worth exploring if you have additional time.

From the city of Phonsavan, in a remote part of eastern Laos, it is easy to visit the impressive and mysterious Plain of Jars. Here hundreds of huge stone jar-shaped vessels lie scattered over the countryside. Little is known about this enigmatic site, though archaeologists believe these jars were used in elaborate burial rituals.

Further south lies Vang Vieng. This small town enjoys a stunning location on the banks of the Nam Song River, surrounded by vivid green rice fields backed by jagged limestone rock formations. There are some fantastic hotels situated on the river and this is an excellent location for adventure activities. Take a cruise or kayak along the river, explore the vast cave systems or or cycle through the peaceful countryside.
