India’s Tiger Reserves & Wildlife Sanctuaries Holidays

asia
For many people, a visit to India wouldn’t be complete without the opportunity to see the nation’s most magnificent animal – the Bengal tiger. India is home to 70% of the world’s remaining tiger population and whilst the species remains endangered, the country has made huge strides in their conservation over recent years.

No day is ever the same when you're on a tiger safari. Whilst the daily routine may be similar, your wildlife experience will be dictated by the natural rhythms of the jungle - that's the most exciting part! Read our short guide as to what to expect.

Aside from tigers, India offers an incredibly diverse range of wildlife. Other stars of the show include leopards, elephants, sloth bears, Indian bison and the one-horned rhino. There are even lions! And with almost 2,000 bird species, the country is a bird watchers paradise.

With national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and tiger reserves dotted across the country, adding a game drive or some wildlife viewing is possible on most of our itineraries. We’ve detailed some of the best areas to visit here, though if you have somewhere else in mind, give us a call and speak to one of our expert travel consultants.

Trailfinders offers a range of India wildlife holidays and we have a dedicated team of destination specialists who are a mine of information about what to do here, often with first-hand travel experience. Whether you want to visit multiple reserves to maximise your sightings or just focus on one, enjoy a short tiger extension from Delhi or Mumbai, or simply spend several days relaxing in the peaceful rural settings that our wildlife lodges offer - they are the perfect people to ask.

WHERE TO GO IN INDIA’S TIGER RESERVES & WILDLIFE SANCTUARIES

centered image

Bandhavgarh National Park
This is one of India's most beautiful national parks with an ancient fort, after which the park is named, set high on a hill.

With the highest density of tigers in Central India, as well as the largest breeding population of leopards, Bandhavgarh is the number one place for a chance of viewing both of these beautiful animals. Sightings of wild boar and jackal are also common.
Gir National Park
Gir is the last remaining refuge of the endangered Asiatic lion, of which there are less than 500 left in the wild.

Slightly smaller than their African cousins with a sparser mane meaning their ears are always visible and a distinctive fold of skin running along their belly, these beautiful big cats share the national park with an array of deer and birdlife.
Kanha National Park
The largest and arguably the king of tiger territory in India, this park has a good number of tigers and is said to have been Rudyard Kipling's inspiration for ‘The Jungle Book’.

The large grasslands here offer excellent viewing opportunities and combined with its lush forests and dense bamboo groves, Kanha provides a varied safari experience.
Kaziranga National Park
Ask any wildlife enthusiast and you're sure to find Kaziranga at the top of their 'must go' list.

Tucked away in the northeastern corner of India, and home to two thirds of the world’s remaining endangered population of one-horned rhinos, this park now also officially has the highest density of tigers anywhere in the world.
Nagarhole National Park
Located on the Karnataka/Kerala border, Nagarhole National Park was established in 1955 on the one time private hunting grounds of the Wodeyar maharajas.

Named after the Nagarhole River (meaning snake river) which appropriately winds its way through the lush forests, the park is most famous for the resident population of wild elephant.
Pench National Park
Quieter than many of the other national parks, Pench National Park has a lower population of tigers but far fewer tourists so offers a more relaxing and back to nature experience than the other reserves.

It is renowned for its fantastic bird watching and has large herds of majestic Indian bison.
Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary
Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary
South India’s most popular wildlife sanctuary, Periyar is set high in the Western Ghat ranges.

Aside from its beautiful setting of thick forest, open grasslands and a large lake, the sanctuary is most famous for its wild elephant. Other animals to keep an eye out for are wild dogs, mouse deer and even the elusive leopard.
Ranthambore National Park
Conveniently located just below the famed Golden Triangle, Ranthambore is India's best known (and busiest) tiger reserve and a visit to this former maharaja's hunting ground can easily be slotted into any Rajasthan itinerary.

The park is renowned for its scenic landscapes and the ruins of an ancient fort at its heart makes for fabulous photos.
Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve
With a range of diverse habitats within its borders and very popular with wildlife aficionados, this relatively new tiger reserve offers a true wilderness experience.

Tiger numbers here aren’t huge, but the low volume of tourists means that visitors can get much closer to the animals and you will more often than not be the only jeep at a sighting.
