Jordan is a land steeped in history - Roman, Bedouin, Arab, Crusader, Ottoman - and stuffed to the gills with natural and man-made wonders. But while some will want to hike the hills of Petra or wade through a river in the Dana Nature Reserve, others will simply want to float in the Dead Sea or soak up the Red Sea sun in Aqaba. Here's a rundown of our four favourite tours to help you decide.

Highlights of Jordan - Small Group Tour

Highlights:  Amman • Wadi Musa • Petra • Wadi Rum • Aqaba

One of our most popular small group tours in the Levant, Highlights of Jordan does exactly what it says on the tin.  From the Roman amphitheatres of Jerash and the crusader fortress at Kerak in the north, to the desert wastelands of Wadi Rum and Red Sea beaches of Aqaba in the south, this 8 day tour criss-crosses the country, using Amman as its hub.

With a maximum group-size of 15 and an average group-size of 10, this intimate tour can easily be combined with tours in either Israel or Egypt to make a two-week holiday. The highlight of this tour is the day at Petra, where one can spend hours stepping back in time an traipsing the hills and rocky edifices of this famous UNESCO World Heritage site. There's an unmissable optional extra on this tour.

On the “Petra by Night” experience one follows the line of tea lights leading the curious down to the Sanctuary. Once there you are greeted by a field of candles, between which the assembled stargazers sit and look up to the shimmering Milky Way above, all the while being serenaded by two Bedouin playing a rababa and an Arabic flute, while others serve the guests cups of Jordanian tea. Visitors are then encouraged to close their eyes and to make a wish. Upon opening one’s eyes again, one is greeted by a panoply of bright, changing colours lighting up the mighty pillars and façade of the Sanctuary. A truly memorable moment.

Petra & Wadi Rum by Bike

Highlights: Amman • Madaba • Dead Sea • Petra •Wadi Rum

The Petra & Wadi Rum tour will naturally appeal to more active travellers, who want to get up close and personal with Jordan. Cycling under cloudless skies through olive groves, hill-top villages nd along sparsely-populated desert roads, this is a uniquely immersive way to get to know this beautiful country.

Don’t let the length of the 9 day  bike tour put you off. Its physicality level is classified as “moderate”, with 5-days cycling with full vehicle support on 95% quiet tarmac roads and only 5% on gravel and sandy roads. The rest of the journey is completed by mini-van or 4WD desert vehicle. Naturally, for an active-style tour, it is important that one has a reasonable level of fitness and that one keeps well-hydrated, especially in the warmer months.

The tour centres on the lush Jordan Valley, and on the whole, the cycling days are short, and other than day 6 from Petra south to Aqaba, one will not be cycling all day. One the two days spent in Petra, there is a fair amount of walking involved, as the site is big and there are opportunities to walk into the sandstone mountains to get a different and rewarding perspective of the site.

This tour shares several destinations in common with the “Highlights of Jordan” trip; such as visits to Jerash, Mount Nebo (with its Byzantine-era mosaics), the Dead Sea and an overnight stay in a basic Bedouin camp in the other-worldly Wadi Rum. But there are certain differences too. While this trip does not stop at Kerak, it does afford you the time to cycle to Little Petra, just north of the main city.

Classic Jordan - Private Tour

Highlights: Amman • Petra • Wadi Rum • The Dead Sea

The places that one visits on our 9-day/ 8-night private tour of Jordan mirror those of the small group adventure tours. However, the major difference is to be found in the style of touring, rather than in the locations.

A made to measure approach ensures that you get to visit the places you want within the timeframe and budget available. A great advantage is the ability to tailor the tour to your own specifications: you might choose to change how long you stay in a particular destination, change your accommodation or even change the route.

By using a private vehicle and driver and local site guides, private touring allows you to complete the often unseen picture and experience authentic encounters while making the very best use of your time. With eight-nights hotel accommodation on a bed-and-breakfast basis the Classic Jordan tour is also a great option for those who don't fancy the idea of overnightting in a basic Bedouin camp. Remember, going off the beaten track does not have to mean roughing it.

Jordan’s Ancient Treasures & Natural Wonders - Private Tour

Highlights: Amman • Desert Castles • Um Quais & Jerash • Petra • Wadi Rum • Dana Nature Reserve • The Dead Sea

This private tour is ideal for those looking to really get under the skin of Jordan, and at 11 days is longer than most private or small group tours of the country. As the name of the tour would suggest, it’s focus is two-fold: Jordan’s fascinating historical sights and on the country’s most spectacular scenery.

The main difference between this tour and the Classic Jordan private tour is that this itinerary includes two nights at the Dana Nature Reserve, a haven for over 200 different bird species and home to remote Berber villages. Trekking is the order of the day here, but worry not, this tour provides the opportunity afterwards to spend two nights at the Dead Sea, where you can avail yourself of the many therapeutic mud treatments on offer and float away your worries at the lowest point on the planet.

Jordan’s Ancient Treasures & Natural Wonders also affords one ample time to explore the Roman Theatre, hilltop Citadel and vibrant souks of the country’s friendly capital, Amman, a bustling hub often overlooked by many private or group tours.

This trip includes many meals and does give you the chance to spend a night under the stars in a desert camp in Wadi Rum. Why not add in a sunrise, hot air balloon ride while you are there, to get a spectacular, birds-eye view of the desert landscape? This was the filming location for, among others, the movies “Lawrence of Arabia” and “The Martian”.
