This edition sees Charlie Baxter from our Product Team discuss his recent visit to vibrant Hong Kong, one of Asia’s most energetic cities.
Where?
Famously boasting the most skyscrapers of any city in the world, Hong Kong is a brimming melting pot of cultures, offering a fascinating blend of traditional and modern architecture. From wandering the night markets of Temple Street and the Michelin starred cuisine, to exploring one of the 263 islands, Hong Kong has everything you could ask for.
A fantastic choice for a stopover, the city is also great as a standalone holiday; we visited for a five night break in December and could have easily spent another month! Whilst a year-round destination, November to March offers a milder, drier climate.
Peak Tram
Why go?
Head on the Peak Tram for uninterrupted sunset views, or for a different perspective head up to Sky100 Observation Deck in the city’s tallest building. For families, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort on Lantau Island is a great day out, or why not jump in a scenic 5.7km (!) cable car to the Big Buddha, Po Lin Monastery, and the idyllic Tai O fishing village?
A great way to get a taste of Hong Kong is by a private city tour. We did A Magical Evening in Hong Kong and our guide offered a unique insight and knowledge, including how the buildings are designed adhering to feng shui, and taking us on the longest outdoor escalator in the world - the regular commuting route for many locals!
Tian Tan Buddha
Highlight?
Accessible by local ferry, Lamma Island is a peaceful place to escape the bright lights. Picture beautiful beaches, jungle trails, incredible seafood, and villages on stilts (and if you’re as unlucky as me, close encounters with resident snakes!). Doing this hike and venturing out of the city showed how much variety Hong Kong offers, and how it is the perfect destination for those struggling to decide between city, countryside, and beach, by offering all three in one place!
Lamma Island
Top tip?
Think about where you want to stay – Hong Kong Island and Kowloon offer two completely different experiences and perspectives of the city. We stayed in Harbour Grand Kowloon, a perfect option for those wanting incredible views of the skyline and great transport links whilst being able to take a step back from the action.
