Cambodia, a land of ancient temples, rich history and vibrant culture, has been attracting travellers for decades. Home to the awe-inspiring Angkor Wat, bustling markets, and pristine beaches, Cambodia offers a wide range of sights and experiences.

To make the most of your visit, it’s important to consider the best time to visit Cambodia. Read on for our guide to help you decide when to embark on a journey to this captivating country.

Understanding Cambodia’s Climate

Cambodia experiences a tropical monsoon climate, with three distinct seasons:

The Cool Dry Season (November to February)

Weather: This season is widely considered to be the best time to visit Cambodia. The temperatures are cooler, ranging from 20˚C to 28˚C, and humidity levels are lower, making it more comfortable for sightseeing.

Activities: The cool dry season is ideal for exploring the temples of Angkor, trekking in the Cardamom Mountains, and enjoying the beaches of Sihanoukville and the islands. The clear skies are perfect for photography and outdoor activities.

Crowds: This is the peak tourist season in Cambodia, so popular attractions can become crowded. Booking accommodations and tours in advance is recommended.

The Hot Dry Season (March to May)

Weather: During this time, temperatures can soar to 35˚C to 40˚C with high humidity. The intense heat can make outdoor activities difficult, especially in the afternoon.

Activities: If you can handle the heat, early mornings and late afternoons are best for visiting temples and other outdoor sites. This is a great time for water-based activities such as boat trips on the Tonle Sap Lake and exploring the Mekong River.

Advantages: There are fewer tourists compared to the cool dry season, which means the popular sites will be less crowded and accommodation rates will potentially be lower.

The Rainy Season (June to October)

Weather: The rainy season in Cambodia brings heavy downpours, typically in the afternoons and evenings. Temperatures range from 24˚C to 32˚C, the landscape turns lush and green, and rivers and lakes are full.

Activities: Despite the rain, this season offers a unique charm. The temples are less crowded, and the landscapes are vibrant. It’s an excellent time for photography and experiencing local festivals like Pchum Ben and the Water Festival.

Advantages: Travel during the rainy season can be more budget-friendly, with lower prices for accommodation and tours. The rain usually doesn’t last all day, allowing for sightseeing in the mornings and late afternoons.

Festivals & Events: Cambodia’s cultural calendar is rich with festivals. The Khmer New Year in April is a key celebration with parades, traditional games and ceremonies. The Water Festival in November marks the end of the rainy season with various boat races and celebrations.

Temple Visits: For a calmer experience at Angkor Wat, consider visiting during the late morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat and the crowds. The temples are especially spectacular at sunrise and sunset.

Best Time to Visit Cambodia Top Tips

Stay Hydrated!: Cambodia’s tropical climate can be physically draining, especially during the hot dry season. Always carry a water bottle and drink sufficient fluids to stay hydrated.

Appropriate Clothing: Lightweight, breathable clothing is crucial. However, when visiting temples and religious sites, dress modestly with covered shoulders and knees.

Local Transportation: Tuk-tuks are a popular, easy and cheap way of getting around Cambodia’s cities such as Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. Negotiate fares before setting off to avoid any disputes.
